9:23pm FNM Party Leader Hubert Ingraham just addressed the crowd gathered at the FNM's Prince Charles Headquarters and announced that 'the party is not going to declare victory tonight.'

9:16pm At the PLP's rally site in Elizabeth, a podium is being set up giving the impression that someone is going to address the crowd soon. As for that crowd, they're maintaining a muted enthusiasm. they are still waving flags and pom poms and appear not to have given up hope that this election could turnaround at tomorrow's recount. Party Chairman Bradley Roberts says they will have their legal team out in full force at tomorrow's recount. Meanwhile, a steady stream of FNM's has been driving by the PLP's rally site, honking their horns.

9:13pm The Unofficial winner of the Elizabeth By-Election Dr Duane Sands says for anyone who ever felt that their vote didn't count, tonight is proof that every single vote counts. He also said in an election with a one vote differential, he's happy he's up by one and not down by one. Sands is taking a cautious approach to his unofficial victory. He said that tomorrow will be spent recounting the votes to see if his one vote majority stands.

9:00pm One thing the major parties will have to try and determine is why so few people bothered to vote in the Elizabeth by-election. By our count, just 64% of registered voters showed up in a country where voter turnout is usually more than 90%.

8:52pm Returning officer Jack Thompson tells The Tribune that there will not be a recount of the ballots until tomorrow. We are still waiting for confirmation on whether the FNM's Dr Duane Sands will declare victory tonight. No word yet from Ryan Pinder's camp.

8:45pm Bradley Roberts spoke with our reporter at the PLP's Elizabeth Headquarters and said the results are a cliff hanger and is assured that after the recount, the PLP will emerge victorious tomorrow and said the closeness of this race sends a clear message to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham

8:43pm With just one vote separating the FNM and PLP the third party candidates have clearly had a major impact on this election. The BDM's Cassius Stuart got 76 votes; the NDP's Dr Andre Rollins got 49 and the Workers' Party's Rodney Moncur got 16.

8:38pm Based on our unofficial calculations, the FNM's Dr Duane Sands has won the election by just one vote. 1501 for him, 1500 for the PLP's Ryan Pinder. There will be recounts, possible protests and even possible election proceedings, so it's unclear when an official winner is likely to be declared.

8.31pm PLP headquarters Prince Charles Drive. A group of 25 PLP supporters are huddled around a radio waiting for the final count. The mood is tense but optimistic as supporters burst into cheers and applause every time a polling division win for the PLP was announced.

8:28pm Polling Division #3 PLP 141; FNM 134; BDM 14; NDP 8; Workers' Party 3.

Polling Division #10 PLP 168; FNM 130; BDM 0; NDP 0; Workers' Party 0.

Polling Division #11 PLP 164; FNM 122; BDM 0; NDP 0; Workers' Party 0.

8:10pm Too close to call. With 7 polling stations in, the FNM is ahead of the PLP by 75 votes, but combined, the other three parties have 77 votes. FNM has 838; PLP has 763; BDM has 40; NDP has 28 and the Workers' Party has 9. With results from polling station number 3 the FNM's gap has narrowed 68.

8:02pm Polling Division #9 unofficial results are: PLP 86; FNM 85; BDM 11; NDP 6; Workers' Party 2.

7:57pm Polling Division #2 unofficial results are: PLP 145; FNM 111; BDM 5; NDP 3; Workers' Party 0.

7:43pm. While most of the PLP supporters gathered at their Elizabeth headquarters are passing the time talking, dancing and playing dominoes, there is one man huddled in a corner listening to a radio. He is anxiously awaiting the results and writing them down to do his own analysis as they come in. The man says he came out of hospital to be a part of this election and plans to go back in when it's all over.

7:29pm Polling Division #7 unofficial results are: PLP 129; FNM 123; BDM 02; NDP 02; Workers' Party 01.

Polling Division #5 unofficial results are: FNM 106; PLP 62; BDM 0; NDP 0; Workers' Party 0.

7:26 Polling Division #8 unofficial results are: FNM 129; PLP 106; BDM 9; NDP 5; Workers' Party 3.

7:24pm Unofficial results for polling division #1 are: FNM 108; PLP 91; BDM 9; NDP 4; Workers' Party 2.

7:18pm The DJ at the PLP's Elizabeth headquarters just announced on the microphone that Ryan Pinder had won polling division number 6, but according to the unofficial results from Faith Temple, it was Sands who won that polling division.

7:06pm We understand just two more polling divisions need to be counted. Polling division #6 unofficial results are: FNM; 157; PLP 121; NDP 11; BDM; 9; Workers' Party 1.

7:02pm A group of PLP supporters just set fire to an FNM campaign t-shirt in the middle of the road outside Ryan Pinder's Elizabeth Estates headquarters. Some of the crowd gathered began cheering as the t-shirt burned, but others called for the group to put it out as they realised members of the media were shooting photographs and video.

6:53pm @ Faith Temple. The vote count is officially underway and a handful of people are still standing round in the cold and dark waiting for official word and for the unofficial winner to be announced.

6:46pm There are only about 25 people at the PLP headquarters on Prince Charles Drive. It appears that because their candidate headed to the Elizabeth Estates headquarters, that's where the crowd is gathering.

6.30 @pm Faith Temple. Ryan Pinder just arrived here. He hugged his family and talked to supporters. He said he feels confident about his chances of winning, and that he is going to go home to take a shower and relax for a bit. Mr Pinder said he expects to be at the PLP Elizabeth headquarters on Prince Charles at around 8.30pm tonight. As he walked away, thunderous applause erupted from the about 100 PLP supporters on the scene. They ran down the street after Mr Pinder waving pom-poms and shouting their support for him.

6:20pm @ Faith Temple. PLP leader Perry Christie just walked out of Faith Temple shaking his head. He told The Tribune he is disappointed about the low voter turnout. Not looking particularly enthusiastic, Mr Christie said that regardless of the end result, he wants to congratulate Ryan Pinder on running such a good campaign. He said Mr Pinder proved his worth and showed his dedication to the Bahamas by renouncing his US citizenship.

6:17pm. Election officials say an official result probably won't be released until tomorrow, but they expect to have an unofficial result within an hour.

6:09pm @ Faith Temple. The polls closed and police blocked the doors. There was no one still waiting to vote when 6 o'clock came. Everyone's waiting for the ballots to be gathered and brought to Faith Temple to be counted.

6:02pm @ Thelma Gibson. A PLP poll worker

frantically ushers a straggling voter towards a booth as the

authorities begin to close the polls. FNM supporters scream at them

that the election is over and that the person should not be allowed to

vote.

6pm The supporters have gathered at Thelma Gibson, but party big wigs are gathered at Faith Temple where the votes are going to be tallied. The mood is tense and no one looks sure of victory anymore.

5:55pm FNM MP Desmond Bannister says 'democracy has prevailed again. We had a good campaign. People came out and voted. Everyone gets home safely.'

5:52pm. FNM say they believe the NDP's candidate Dr Andre Rollins will at least get enough votes to get his deposit back. Wonder if they'd give it to him in quarters.

5:45pm @ Thelma Gibson. Very low voter

turnout. With 15 minutes to go, the last minute surge of voters hoped

for hasn't happened.

5:40pm @ Thelma Gibson.BDM candidate Cassius Stuart suspects the voter turnout could be so low because many of the people who appeared on the register weren't actually eligible to vote. He said if a better analysis of the registry could be done, it may reveal that turnout among eligible voters could be closer to 70 percent. if he wins the vote, he says he will celebrate outside the FNM's constituency headquarters.

5:25pm @ Faith Temple. Voters showing no outward support for any candidate are complaining about the groups gathered to support the FNM and PLP. They say there needs to be more police presence at the gate.

5:18pm @ Faith Temple. Crowds for both the Free National Movement and the Progressive Liberal Party are growing outside the polling station at Faith Temple. Tensions are mounting with supporters of both parties shouting at each other and becoming increasingly aggressive. Police had to step in and separate them to calm things down. The polls close in 40 minutes and votes will be tallied at Faith Temple.

5:08pm @ Thelma Gibson. FNM chairman Carl Bethel said his party’s poll workers are reporting that the FNM is doing very well, and are confident that the majority of votes cast so far have been for the governing party. PLP Leader Perry Christie says he is cautiously optimistic about their chances of winning even though he firmly believes Ryan Pinder is the best candidate.

4:45pm @ Thelma Gibson. PLP Leader Perry Christie says the last update he got is that there's been a 50 - 60% voter turnout so far. He said he's disappointed in the voter response because typically the Bahamas enjoys a much higher turnout.

As for why people aren't voting, Christie says he's been hearing that some voters might have been intimidated by talk of a scrutiny. He said they might have been concerned that they'd be singled out and asked who they voted for if the process went that way.

4:22pm @ Thelma Gibson. It's very quiet here as well. Outside it's a different story. Party supporters seem to have gathered here to wait for the polls to close. Polling division number 7 is the busiest with 15 people standing in line waiting to vote. The teams managing four polling divisions were canvassed by our reporter and say there have been at least a few challenged votes at each.

3:47pm. FNM Chairman Carl Bethel is accusing

the PLP of running a dirty campaign. He said that the night before the

election the FNM team found that many of their campaign posters had

been torn down. He said, though, that during the election process today

both sides were able to conduct their affairs with few cases of

animosity.

3:30pm. PLP campaign chairman Dr Bernard Nottage is concerned that the 'draconian, outdated and inappropriate' broadcast rules being enforced by URCA are unfair and believes that the FNM is running a 'dirty campaign' and says it's time 'we all grow up' and allow democratic processes to take place.

3:12pm. Mr Christie said he and his party are assuring that all voters are able to get their mandated two hours off from their jobs to vote and can find transportation out to polling stations. According to him, he is cautiously optimistic about today's by-election.

2:57pm. Former PLP MP for Elizabeth, Malcolm Adderley, refused to comment on today's election proceedings, telling The Tribune "i'm not speaking today".

2:40pm. Leader of the opposition, Perry Christie, said he is concerned that voters might be having a difficult time getting out to polling stations. He said he and his members are getting anxious because voter turnout has been so low thus far. "The real concern right now is the low turnout," said Mr Chrsitie. He said he came out to ensure the small turnout had nothing to do with voter intimidation, because of the hordes of party supporters out at the stations.

1:40pm. Worker's Party candidate Rodney Moncur says he's not swayed by the number of people showing up in red and yellow t-shirts. He said a number of people wearing FNM and PLP t-shirts have been winking at him and whispering to him. He and others have alleged that some of these supporters were paid to wear the shirts. The police say no one has filed an official complaint with them, and even if they had been paid, there's no law being broken.

1:15pm @ Faith Temple. The FNM operative working Polling Division #4 says from what they can tell at that particular polling division, the votes so far are 5 to 1 in favour of the FNM's Dr Duane Sands. The PLP operative working the same polling division says it's hard to tell how the voting is going at this point, and suggested they'd have a better idea after lunch.

1:05pm. Despite the heavy campaigning on the parts of both major parties there are still people undecided about how to cast their vote. Two swing voters at Faith Temple said they would prefer to give their vote to one of the third party candidates because they feel the FNM and PLP are serving up the same old same old.

12:49pm. Returning Officer Jack Thompson just reporting that voting has now slowed down at all of the polling divisions. Each of the 12 polling divisions has had more than 100 people vote. One of them had 130 so far. This means about 1/4 of the eligible voters have turned out to vote with five hours left to go. He says he does not know how many of them were yellow ballots which will not be counted towards today's tally. The number of challenged voters is not as high as they'd anticipated so far and Thompson says he believes people got the message about it being illegal to vote when not eligible.

12:44pm. Bahamian entertainer Daddi Whites just performed the song he wrote for Ryan Pinder's election campaign for the crowd gathered outside Thelma Gibson. Tribune242.com will have video of this peformance soon.

12:38pm. Voting has slowed to a trickle at Faith Temple, but there are still large groups of supporters outside the polling stations. The groups are predominantly FNM and PLP, but NDP candidate Dr Andre Rollins says don't be deceived by the red and yellow t-shirts, just wait for the votes to be counted.

12:20pm. As the PLP's candidate Ryan Pinder was leaving Thelma Gibson a short while ago, a crowd of supporters across the street began cheering and shouting 'It's Ryan Time.' He went over and hugged a group and some of the women began dancing in a suggestive manner.

12:19pm. Returning Officer Jack Thompson has been at Thelma Gibson checking out progress at the various polling divisions. He says we could soon have an update on what percentage of voters have already voted.

11:48am @ Thelma Gibson. PLP Deputy Leader Philip 'Brave' Davis chiming in on his candidate's voting history saying he thought it was disingenuous of the FNM to reveal this information at the last minute giving Ryan Pinder no chance to respond. He points out that during the time in question, Pinder was living and working in the United States and so would not have had the residency required to vote in a Bahamian election.

11:30am @ Thelma Gibson. PLP candidate Ryan Pinder calls Tommy Turnquest's revelation about his voting history 'gutter politics' and said he was not going to respond. He remains confident that he will win the Elizabeth seat and says he will spend the rest of the day visiting the various polling stations.

11:18am. FNM Chairman Carl Bethel says when Ryan Pinder arrived at Thelma Gibson this morning, the FNM supporters gathered outside sang the U.S. national anthem. When their candidate Dr Duane Sands arrived, the group sang the Bahamian national anthem.

11:07. NDP candidate Dr Andre Rollins said that it is embarrassing that PLP candidate Ryan Pinder has never voted in an election in the Bahamas. Dr Rollins believes that if this information was revealed earlier Mr Pinder would have never been able to overcome this.

10:46am. Last night at the FNM's final rally, Tommy Turnquest, the MP for Mount Moriah told the crowd that the PLP's candidate Ryan Pinder had never voted in a Bahamian election, but voted last year in the US election. Today, PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts said this was nothing but FNM 'propaganda' that was being used as a 'red herring' to distract PLPs. Roberts said it was 'not a big deal' and that Turnquest's comments were not a matter of any substance. He further suggested that Pinder had renounced his US citizenship before he nominated and that the FNM was aware of this all along.

10:40am. The Worker's Party candidate Rodney Moncur has filed a complaint with a returning officer saying that party supporters are not allowed by law to be within 100 yards of the polling station. But he claims both the FNM and the PLP have t-shirt clad party supporters inside that area. The FNM's lawyer Catherine Hassan is arguing that they are allowed to have three supporters within those boundaries.

10:30am @ Thelma Gibson. Staunch PLP supporter Laura is heading up the jeering for the PLP camp situated outside Thelma Gibson. She's not dressed as extravagantly as she usually is, but she's making her presence known. The PLP crew is shouting 'Friends don't let friends vote FNM' and singing songs on this rainy morning about water putting out the FNM's torch.

10:25am @ Faith Temple. FNM Deputy Leader Brent Symonette just demanded that a PLP operative show him his letter authorising him to represent the party outside a polling station. According to our reporter, the operative had been using his cell phone to text someone and Symonette said that was against the electoral rules.

10:20. Progressive Liberal Party Chairman Bradley Roberts is also excited about the rain this morning. He says everybody knows that crabs come out when it rains and it's a blessing from God that will put out the FNM's torch.

10:08am @ Faith Temple. An FNM operative is claiming a voter was allowed to cast his vote using a grocery store ID card and not the required passport or driver's license as proof of identification.

9:55am. Speaking with the Tribune by phone, Dr Sands said the rain is a good thing as far as his FNM team is concerned. 'Every major FNM victory has been predicted with rain so it's a symbolic happening. I imagine the party opposing will spin it in a different way but for us, precedent has been that showers are symbols of blessings to come.

9:46am @ Thelma Gibson. Dr Sands has now moved on to Thelma Gibson.

9:42am @ Thelma Gibson. The FNM's candidate Dr Duane Sands, the BDM's Cassius Stuart and the NDP's Andre Rollins have all been to check in on the voting at Thelma Gibson. Voting going smoothly and voters say it's taking them anywhere from a few minutes to about 25 minutes from the time they get in line to actually complete the process. Crowds of party supporters are starting to gather outside the gates.

9:28am @ Faith Temple. Police just stepped in to disperse a crowd of FNM and PLP supporters who'd gathered around PLP candidate Ryan Pinder and FNM Deputy Leader Brent Symonette. They had gathered immediately outside one of the voting booths and the rules state that each party can only have a set number of supporters/officials immediately outside a voting room at a given time. Both sides had too many people so the police took action.

9:21am. The PLP's candidate Ryan Pinder just arrived at Faith Temple where polling divisions 1, 4, 6, 8, 9 & 12 are voting. He's walking the corridors, shaking hands with party operatives and voters. The Free National Movement Deputy Leader Brent Symonette and other FNM officials are closely following him. So far voting has been going smoothly. The longest line has about 20 people in it.

9:11am. The Free National Movement Chairman Carl Bethel says already a few people have had to vote on yellow-coloured ballots this morning because their eligibility has been called into question. These votes will not be counted today, and will only be looked at again if there is an election court petition.

9:02am @ Thelma Gibson. About 100 people have voted so far and the lines at some polling divisions are about 20 people deep. Both the Free National Movement and the Progressive Liberal Party have crowds of supporters gathering nearby wearing party t-shirts.

8:53am @ Faith Temple. Rain is not keeping voters from coming out, although the lines are not long at all. What the rain has done is keep the crowds of onlookers at bay for now. BDM candidate Cassius Stewart says his team is excited and they are confident that Elizabeth is ready for change and the BDM is the change they are looking for.

The eyes of the entire nation will be on Elizabeth constituency today as thousands of party supporters converge there to witness the hotly contested by-election unfold.

Title: Concern Citizen

Am really disappointed that persons would actually be proud of poor the turn out of voters in the Elizabeth bye election. We as Bahamains have a civic and responsilbe duty to this country call The Bahamas. Are we not the very same people who call ourselves PROUDE bahamains. I know that the only nationality that I hold is bahamain and I know that irregardeless to what party is governing the country we pray that it is for the advancement for us as bahamains. Soo, to find this as a joke is an insult to me and I pray that many others who love this counrty feel the very same as I do and do not in any which way join hands with those persons who find this seriouness a big joke.
Please bahamians we are not punishing the parliamentarians when we decide not to exesrcise our right to cast our vote . At the end of the day there will be a governing body should it be for or against your choice. Be responsible citizens of this great country God has blessed us with and do that which is responsible. We have more than enough irresponsible persons putting themselves forward as candidates who consider themselves "LEADERS" HaHa.....remember every vote against them is an accomplishement for the country.
People let us take this exercise serious or whatever decisions is made on behalf of the people of the Bahamas deal with it brothers and sisters. No Vote, No Voice.

Title: Delightedly Bitter

I just read the minute by minute coverage of the election online and hats off to the Tribune for brilliantly recording the reality check for the two major political parties. A near tie and 64% voter turn out should really send a message. I wonder if they will get the message. Probably not. They will come up with every excuse as to why people did not show up to vote. The real reason - People are sick and tired of mediocrity. Now instead of trying to solve the major issues we have in The Bahamas, the next few years will be taken up with an all out battle (in court no doubt) to see who WON. In the mean time - the country continues to go to hell.

Title: JOKES, JOKES, JOKES

MORE PEOPLE VOTED FOR NEITHER OF THEM, THAN VOTED FOR ANY OF THEM!!!
LOLLLL!!!
Is there a greater message here???

Title: I STAND VINDICATED!

As I have been saying all along," THERE WILL BE NO WINNER OF THIS ELECTION, BUT PLENTY LOSERS!" The Bahamian people are the losers, because for the past four weeks this country has been distracted form the serious issues that it faces. Almost two months into the year and our elected official have hardly been to parliament but are up and down campaigning in an election that is of little significance, especially with campaigning for the general election starting within a year. As I have said before," THE BIGGER PARTY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE PARTY THAT REFUSED TO PARTAKE IN THIS FIASCO/SIDESHOW, BUT INSTEAD KEEP THE COUNTRY FOCUSED ON THE RESOLUTION OF ISSUES!" Now what? More time wasting? And who could feel comfortable or celebratory with a 1,2,3 vote majority in an election of no consequence, and an election with a 65% voter turn-out? SMT!!!! GOD HAS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR!

Title: Election Sands Win

@ Tired of the Crap! you are spot on, what you and many others on this post have written should be publisehd on the front pages! Bahamians brood only on the bad and not on the good. How ungrateful can you be, when you can clearly see changes taking place in our society. Any intelleigent person would know exactly what or whom are economy is tied! Read, Read Bahamians to educate yourselves on this Global Recession that we are trying to pluck ourselves from. Know that most or our tourist current comes from U:S.A....KNow that one day there will be no tourist, and we could end up just like jamaica and under improverished nations. Give credit where it is due and start being a solution! Help to restore the Bahamas's good name, which was stripped when Pindling threw the mace out of the house and became the government of the Bahamas. We need trusted leadeship, a government that cares about our country, and for now that party is the FNM!
Should Mr. Sands be made official, my advice to all Elizabeth Estates residents is to give up party-lines, and join in and help to make your constituency a better one! Especially if you are a so called christian, you will join in and help thy neighbors. Peace to all!

Title: Responsible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am disgusted at the irresponsibility Former Prime Minister Perry Christie has displayed and continues to display. He is an absolute disgrace when it comes to character, leadership, honorable, trustworthy and responsible just a few of what makes up a good leader.
At the final count in 2007 general election knowing very well that they had lost the general election he purposely and intentionally caused what could have turned out to be a confrontational and dangerous atmosphere insisting that the PLP party had won the general election. He knew it was not so. How irresponsible Mr. christie!!!!!!!! and now again an0ther occasion to show how irresponsible you really are......... you know that no matter how small or large a margin is if you are not the one ahead at the final count it is considered a LOSS.Please get it in your thick skull and do the right and responsible thing.....................a loss is a loss a defeat is a defeat. When will you get it?
Why are you out tonight and incenuatiing to party supporters that Mr. Ryan Pinder is the newest MP for the constituency of Elizabeth when in actuallity it is not soo. How irresponsible again!!!!!!!!!!! Mr. christie if you can't be honest just be responsible man........

Its funny...
If a party in opposition it blames crime on the government
When they are in power its not the government's problem crime is the way it is.
If the party is in power and the economy does well they often ignore the US economy's growth
Of course whatever party is in power when the economy does poor along with the US governemnt they like to point to the linkage to the US economy
When in opposition our parties blame the other for the national average. while when they are in power its the same or slightly worse or slightly better (hooray we got a D+ while you got a D)
Both parties talk special interests yet both parties pad their buddies with govt contracts.
Both of them are jokes if you ask me

God helps those who help themselves. Remember that! Praying will not solve the Bahamas very real problems in crime, education, tourism, the economy and the diversification of our economy. Jesus isn't going to help you with that, so stop talking about him in that context! Using caps does not make your message stronger! Just for your information! Overly religious and aggressive people should stay out of politics entirely! Your relationship to God is your own and personal, screaming it to the world does not make you a better person or a better Christian - it just shows your insecurity.

David minding his own business was hidden from view and counted out. Title: Ingraham Speals the Truth

There are several points that I noticed when listening to the many candidates within this campaign.
When our Prime Minister mentioned that irregardless of the result of this bye-election the FNM remains the Government, he stated a fact, not simply out of arrogance. I believe that the Government is doing a good Job even with the recent circumstances that have affected this country, most importantly the global economic recession. They made certain resources available to aid us in remaining on our feet, from the turning on of electricity, to the unemployment benefit. In my opinion they are the BEST party for the Bahamas when it comes hard times.....they are the ones that will see the country through.
The Government are not the reason for the increase in crime in our country........neither are they the reason for the increase in unemployment....how do you create jobs in a recession? At least with the economy beginning to turn around, jobs are now becoming available again. Now concerning crime, we only have ourselves to blame!!!!! How many of us have the criminal living at home with us? How many of us buy the stolen items? How many of benefit from the crime and close our eyes and turn a cheek? WE are the problem and the solutions begin with us!!!
As to Ryan Pinder..........My intelligence is insulted by the PLP...Why? This is the same party who during the 2007 election who attacked the FNM for having a white Deputy Leader? Talk about speaking with 2 tongues!!!! If you are going to emphazise being a black Bahamian as your mantra they continue it, instead of being shifty and wishy washy, it shows poor leadership!!!
I have no idea where this man come from but he still works for a company that does NOT directly or indirectly inject money or anything else into the Bahamas.....I HAVE A PROBLEM with that!!!!
And finally concerning the Debate........It was more so a night of comedy thanks to Rodney Moncur than an actual debate on the issues and I do not blame Dr. Sands for not attending the circus!!!!

Of all the pertinent issues that could be discussed concerning the forward development of our country we waste time with this drivel. The man wasn't normally resident in the Bahamas, therefore he could not vote in the Bahamas. We don't have a system of absentee balloting. Many young professionals remain in the U.S. after college to hone their skills and gain experience so that when they return they will be better equipped to perform at internationally accepted standards. What is admirable is that Mr. Pinder upon returning home chose to immediately go about seeking to offer himself for service to the Bahamian people.

Title: may the best man win!

I am a grad student in Michigan and can't say enough how pleased and overjoyed I am for this minute by minute coverage of the by election. Kudos to the Tribune. This is what we call cutting edge technology. May God continue to prosper the Tribune. Having said that, any objective observer has to question Ryan Pinder's loyalties. He seems to be a great candidate and one of vision. But in thirty five years, he hasn't voted once in his native country? In addition, why did he return home now? And when he does return home, his living is derived, presumably, from a business which does not directly support the Bahamian economy and one where Bahamians aren't needed. God forgive me if I am judging, but I don't think he is the best man for the job. This is no time for "tryin Ryan." We need a more experienced and loyal candidate. Still, may God's kingdom come and may his will be done.

Education is not a simple answer but I believe it is the crux of most of our problems and the key to solving them. I would like to see our Government concentrate almost all of it's effort and resources towards cleaning up and improving our Education, Policing and Immigration systems. I believe that eventually (and not too long after) other things will work out better and easier by extension.
But unfortunately, when elections come around the focus is taken off of everything else and all anyone can think about is campaigning and that's sad considering that the campaigning for a general election begins about a year or year and a half in advance of the election meaning work only gets done for about three and a half years of every five year period which translates to about a 30% reduction in productivity. I would not be happy about getting that from my employees.

Stop shifting the goalpost of your argument the issue in your words not mine was and I scrolled down to quote you correctly and I read the constitution also. Quote from your words "the governor general may deprive that person of his citizenship if he voluntarily claims and votes in the us.that law is clear ryan should be disqualified"
My reply was 1. that it said "MAY" not "MUST" the governor general doesn't have to do anything. 2. It didn't say it was illegal so your claim that it was "CLEAR" that Ryan should be disqualified was factually inaccurate and I laid out a litany or reason why which I will not repeat again. Double check what I said earlier like you should have double checked the constitution. You bring those weak arguments in to the lane and you will get checked. March on Bahama Land
Also common sense and the law can be very different things. I actually support Sandy because I think he is actually at a different point in his life and would have more time to devote to the people of Elizabeth if he so chooses. Will he well that it is a different matter who knows. But it's not right for you to come in throwing crazy accusations against Ryan that are not accurate. Don't expect that you can go online and spout any randomness and not expect to get called on it. I think Ryan is a good guy and a qualified candidate and he was born in Nassau. You complain that young people don't try an get involved and when a young person tries to get involved, and I call anyone under 40 young, you attack him with insignificant and substantially irrelevant issues no matter that they may be entertaining.
I think Sandy may be better for this moment. But I also said no individual MP can do that much for any constituency. Really it comes down to the Prime Minister. It's the way our system is designed. The buck begins and ends with Papa. If you don't recognize that by know just ask Sandy why he wasn't allowed to speak to the people of Elizabeth at the Debate? He wasn't afraid of the debate he was afraid of Papa. Because Papa told him NO! Sit down and be quite. "But Papa I want to go and compete with the other boys!" "Damnit Sandy if I have to tell you one more time close your mouth and sit down I will show you how yellow and black and blue make red!!!"
Come to think of it now maybe I wouldn't vote for Sandy. But he has the capacity to work hard and that is all you can really ask for. It's not my area anyway. But I think the whole community should support whoever wins but just need to understand where the power really lies.
And for that Lizzy who was attacking Ryan because he was white. You are embarrassing yourself.

When it was a PLP area for about 15 or 20 years with not much if any at all being accomplished and the ignorant party supporters still want a party who obviously has done nothing for them. Any one party would never be able to please Bahamian people because there would always be something someone doesn't agree with but one thing I can say the facts are there and record is there for what the FNM has done in its time in office check the records.

That will never happen because we have other MP's who are dual citizen's now. As well as a very very significant dual citizen nonpolitical population. If you do it to Ryan you have to do it to everybody. Also notice the language of the text says MAY not MUST. The gov. general doesn't have to do anything. It doesn't say it's illegal either. So you are clearly in error or not familiar with interpretation of law when you say "the law is clear ryan should be disqualified". The law is not clear Ryan should be disqualified. Like I said we have other dual citizen MP's on both sides. If you do it for Ryan you have to do it for everybody that includes people not running for office also. Come again Sandy Smith. BAM BAM BAM
The FNM clearly thought of that but decided not to pursue it because they displayed a pretty good degree of foresight. Such an action could be an extreme mistake with ramifications outside of one meager bi-election. Ask yourself do you really think the FNM wouldn't have perused that course of action if it was clearly illegal? Or if they were sure it wasn't a bad idea? Seriously? Don't cut of your nose because you gotta sneeze. Do you think the govt. is not familiar with that portion of the constitution?

He ain't been home that long cause he is young. He was overseas in school and working for a while. When Sandy was that age he had just come back home also.
If you get multiple degrees you are going to be gone for a while. That's just the way it is. Yall want him vote just to vote? If he didn't know what the candidate was saying should he have still voted?
Why don't the FNM show if Sandy was voting when he was in College, Med School or doing his Residency in the states? That's 12 years at least right there when Sandy wasn't voting.
If you think Sandy will work harder fine, if you think Stuart, Rollins or Moncur is better because they will work harder fine. But don't gobble up all the foolishness on the side and swallow the bait hook line and sinker because you are what you eat
There are many MP's on both sides now who currently have dual status. There are MP's whose kids have dual citizenship. There are more MP's who if they don't have citizenship have green cards and own homes overseas. In both parties. What are the next stupid questions gonna be? Where were Sandy kids born? I ain't speculating on that one but there are number of MP's currently who have foreign status in both parties. But the bottom line is according to the law that doesn't matter.
The law saws it doesn't matter. Why attack the guy for something that according to our laws that ain't wrong? We worry to much about the wrong stuff in the Bahamas.
If you want attack him say he don't have enough experience, maybe to young etc. Attack Sandy cause he didn't know there was poor people in Elizabeth but last minute tricks let that be.
Let's talk about real issues. Both of the candidates seem qualified hopefully who ever wins will work hard. But there is only so much an individual MP can do in our system anyway. Everything has to go through Papa.

Title: Like Father Like Son

Anyone who knows Marvin knows he is a self-centered opportunist. Why would Ryan be any different. In fact, Marvin has bragged that his son has a nastier edge in any and all negotiations. Any person who drives through Elizabeth Estates once a year can safety acclaim they have more in common with the constituency than Ryan Pinder. How many Spanish Wells people want to have anything in common outside of their inward community anyways.

Title: proof

the proof is in the pudding as to who cares about the Elizabeth constituency and all
bahamians. the plp did nothing to show for Elizabeth. It was the FNM that built the clinic to aid the sick. the Fnm who built the library to assist the students The Fnm that created job opportunities and the FNM who built the parks for the children. If the people of Elizabeth vote for the Ryan Pinder they will get what the plp was giving them all along, which is nothing.

Title: ORDER IS ON THE WAY TO THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

BLACK TUESDAY LYNDEN PINDLING SHOWED DISRESPECT FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY BY TOSSING THE MACE OUT OF THE WINDOW TO THE PEOPLE SAYING THAT IS WHERE IT BELONGED. THE COLONY OF GREAT BRITAIN IN 1967 WAS SWAYED TO BELIEVE THAT MOSES CAME TO DELIVER THEM CALLING HIM A FATHER OF THE NATION CALLED THE BAHAMAS IN 1973. IN 1985 A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY FOR ACCOUNTABILITY PLACED PINDLING BEFORE THE WORLD AND THE COUNTRY WAS BRANDED A PARADISE FOR SALE WITH DRUG TRAFFICKING BEING A MAJOR PROBLEM. IN 1992 THE FNM GOVERNMENT HEADED BY HUBERT INGRAHAM TOOK OFFICE AND SHOWED UTTER DISGRACE TAKING OUT STATESMANSHIP TOTALLY. CHRISTIE TOOK OVER AND INGRAHAM ENSUED BEING IN OFFICE UNTIL THIS DAY. UNDER THE NOISE OF THE PEOPLE THE BAHAMAS REMAINED A DRUG HAVEN WITH THE AUTHORITIES AWARE THAT HAITIANS WERE COMING AND GOING AS THEY CHOSE. THOSE WITH MONEY NEVER LEFT THEY SIMPLY MULTIPLIED IN GREAT NUMBERS SO THAT BAHAMIANS ARE NO LONGER THE PEOPLE BORN IN THE COUNTRY SOLELY WITH RIGHTS TO BE GIVEN THAT CONSTITUTION FIRST HAND IN ALL AFFAIRS THAT CONCERNS THEM. OTHERS WHO CAME FROM DISTANT LAND HAVE MORE SAY ABOUT WHAT GOES ON. LAWYERS, DOCTORS AND PROFESSIONALS WHO WENT TO SCHOOL RETURN ONLY WITH THE PAPER AS NOTHING THAT DEMONSTRATES WISDOM HAS BEEN DISPLAYED BUT SAVE ONLY BY COMMON PEOPLE. IT IS CERTAIN THAT ON THIS DAY THE BAHAMAS WILL LEARN THAT WISDOM IS WHAT WILL CAUSE GREAT SHAME TO THOSE WITH THE DOCTORATES, WALK IN THE FEAR OF MAN AND NOT IN THE FEAR OF GOD WITH REVERENCE FOR ALL LIFE. ORDER HAS COME TO THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY AND RODNEY MONCUR SHALL ENTER INTO THE HOUSE FOR THE SAKE OF SHOWING PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF. IN THAT HOUSE WHICH BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE TO BE OF SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE IT SHALL BE THAT OPPRESSORS WILL BE SHOWN FOR WHO THEY ARE IN A LAND WHERE THEY SAY ONE THING YET DO ANOTHER. EVERY POWER AND ALL POWERS THAT BE MUST BOW BEFORE THE CREATOR OF ALL LIFE IN THIS HOUR CONCERNING THE DESTINIES ASSIGNED FOR THIS HOUR. THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SHALL BECOME ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE THINGS DONE ON THE TIME OF THE PEOPLE OF THE NATION AND THE END RESULT SHALL BE SIMPLY THIS THE ABASEMENT OF MANY WHO EVERYONE WHO THINK THEY ARE SOMEBODY SHALL BE GREAT, WITH TRUE GREATNESS COMING FROM THOSE WHO MANY ARE YET TO SEE THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM IN. FOR FAR TOO LONG THE PRACTICE OF SERVING MAMMON AND SPEAKING GOD PREVAILED WITHOUT CORRECTION. YOU SEE THE TIME HAS COME FOR RESURRECTING THOSE WHOM YOU HAVE COUNTED OUT AND HAVE LIVED IN A LAND AS THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN LONG DEAD IN THE BAHAMAS. IT SHALL BE A SIGN AND A WONDER THAT THE FOOLISH THINGS OF THIS WORLD SHALL CONFOUND THE WISDOM OF THE LEADERS WHO HAVE BEEN PLACED FOR THIS CAUSE TO SHOW THAT GOD HAS THE FINAL SAY IN THE AFFAIRS OF MANKIND AND IN THE COUNTRY WHERE PEOPLE PRACTICES WITCHCRAFT. GLORIFY MY NAME FOR I SHALL BE EXALTED IN ALL THE EARTH IN THIS HOUR. OH ISLES OF THE SEAS LET YOUR PRAISES COME FORTH TO ME. I WILL LIFT UP THOSE THAT ARE DOWNCAST. IN ME THERE IS HOPE AND AS I HAVE PROMISED I SHALL DELIVER. OH YOU WHO REJECTED MY PROPHETS AND LAUGHED THEM TO SCORN, YOUR HOUR HAS COME AND THERE SHALL BE TERROR IN THE HEART OF THOSE WHO HAVE DONE WRONG INTENTIONALLY AND NEVER REPENTED BUT KEPT ON. I TOLD YOU TOUCH NOT MINE ANOINTED AND DO MY PROPHETS NO HARM. YOU SHALL PAID AND I WILL NOT HEAR ANY OF YOU WHEN YOU CRY OUT TO ME BECAUSE I HAVE WARNED YOU MANY TIMES TO CHANGE. FOR ALL OF THIS IT IS THE HOUR THAT I SPEAK. BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. I SHALL BE FEARED IN THE COUNTRY CALLED THE BAHAMAS BECAUSE IN CHAOS IT IS ONLY I ALONE THAT BRINGS ORDER. YOU HAVE TURNED YOUR BACKS ON THE ONE WHO HAVE GIVEN YOU WEALTH AND PROSPERED THE WORKS OF YOU HANDS GIVING CREDIT TO YOURSELVES ALONE. FOR A TIME I WILL CORRECT THE NATION IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD FOR IT TO BE A TESTAMENT, NEVER AGAIN TO DO TO ANY PERSON IN A NATION THE THINGS MY SERVANTS HAVE SUFFERED DOING WHAT IS RIGHT. MY NAME SHALL BE HONOURED AND NOTHING SHALL SAVE YOU FROM THE WRATH THAT IS UNFOLDING AS YOU READ THIS. YOU SHALL REPAY EVERYTHING YOU HAVE STOLEN IN TIME, TALENT AND TREASURES FROM MY SERVANTS. YES YOU SHALL PAY IT IN FULL. I HAVE ORDAINED IT TO BE SO AS IT HAS BEEN IN EGYPT. BE IT ACCORDING TO MY WILL AND IT IS SO ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. I WILL EXPOSE ALL FILTH I HAVE SEEN IN YOUR LAND.

I just found this site and now my whole office now is following the bye election online! We are having a big row, but most of us feel the fact that Ryan has never voted here before will hurt him, and that the FNM will win.

Title: No Bradley Roberts.

No Bradley Roberts, what Tommy Turnquest said ain't no FNM propaganda, it's the truth. Go to the FNM website and down load Mr. Pinder's voting information for yourself.
One thing with the FNM, they don't say things if they don't have facts to support it.
Unlike the PLP's web site, that's where you would find the propaganda.

Title: Poor Betty

And he is exercising his right to become a member of parliament of the Bahamas. This is politics, not politrics. Educate yourself. Just because you do not like what I say does not dictate where my vote lies. You must be one of those with the "American " children. Will they be voting here and there too? You can't have it both ways either

That's right.. they took too long to reveal

Title:

Disgusted, it is not irrelevant... he is the one who wants to become a member of parliament... so his loyalty should be to THE BAHAMAS!!!

Posted By: nathasha On: 2/16/2010

Title: Oh yes it's relevant

If Ryan Pinder was soo loyal to the Bahamas, why didn't he come home to vote. Just how he voted in the US he could have moved back to the Bahamas, just like he has done now, so he would have been entitled to vote. He has no loyalty to this Country. He has voted where his loyalty lies, the US. So Bradley Roberts cut the bull. We don't need anyone who just moved back to the Bahamas some 2 years ago talking bout he wants to represent us. Sorry Ryan, you can have it both ways. You can't serve two masters. I only wonder what took the fnm so long to reveal this information.l

Title: Ignorance!!!

You say that our Prime Minister is anxiously waiting for the economy in the U.S. to rebound so that we may be positively impacted!!! Well you should be anxiously waiting that too...not only the Prime Minister relys on that...the whole country does!!! That has nothing to do with politics at all. And the man (Ryan Pinder) should have voted at least once...come on now, if The Bahamas means that much to him why wasn't he here before to support his 'Party' in past elections? What makes him so much better than anyone else for the job when he hasn't even been living in the Bahamas for the past several years?

Posted By: mitchell On: 2/16/2010

Title: aintcheckinfa_nun

It's so comical that the FNM supporters would seek an attempt to berate Mr. Pinder by singing the national anthem of the U.S. The very same country that the PM, our leader, is anxiously awaiting for their economy to rebound so that we may be positively impacted.
hmmm.................

YOU ARE NOT A FNM EITHER, THOSE BAHAMAINS ARE EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS. IF YOU WERE AN FNM THAT SHOULDNT CHANGE YOU. SO CUT YOUR MESS OUT. ITS POLITICS.

Title: This is crap!

Cut this mess out. Sing both those anthems for the many Bahamians who are also "token" Americans where their mother travel to the States just to have them at the expense of US citizens and US residents tax dollars, and for the benefits provided by those tax dollars. Ask their mothers if they ever lived in that country or paid taxes? Not a day like it. And then theywant go out and start some mess like this. Fellow Bahamians, those of you who ascribe to and participate in this stupidity, attacking the man for taking advantage of his birth right, are HYPOCRITES. I am not a PLP, but Ryan Pinder's dual citizenship is IRRELEVANT. After this debacle I won't be voting FNM either. Go attack those prior and present parliamentarians who accumulated massive wealth once they got in the house. Investigate that and act on that. All of your priorities are in the wrong place!!!!!

Title: WHAT IS TO UNFOLD

TRUST AND PROGRESSION WERE MISUNDERSTOOD BY THOSE CHOSEN TO BE SERVANTS OF THE PEOPLE. PSALM 10 SPEAKS OF THE MINDSET OF GOVERNMENT THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN GIVEN. WITHIN 36 YEARS OF THE BAHAMAS INDEPENDENCE ,THE ELIZABETH BY-ELECTION PRECEDE ISSUES THAT BEGINS TO REVEAL THE OPPRESSION OF THE VOTING CITIZENS BORN IN THE BAHAMAS , WHOSE VOTES NOW MARK A NEW ERA. IT HAS BEEN A MANDATE CALLED BY GOD NOT MAN AS MANY THOUGHT: TO EXPOSE PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS, THE RULERS OF DARKNESS, SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS IN HIGH PLACES AND FALSE PROMISES THAT HAVE CREATED ALL OF THE VIOLENCE AND CHAOS. NATURE SPEAKS CONSTANTLY AND DURING HURRICANES OR EARTHQUAKES GOD IS THE NAME ON THE LIPS OF HUMANITY NOT LEADERS JUST REMEMBER THIS. WARNINGS HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS ARENA WHICH HAVE BECOME TEMPLES FOR MANIPULATION, INTIMIDATION, WHOREDOM, DEBAUCHERY, VICTIMIZATION, GREED, SELFISH AMBITION AND NEGLECT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY. THERE ARE SONGS BEING PLAYED ON THE AIRWAVES THAT SAYS IT ALL THE COUNTRY IS CORRUPT AND IT MUST STOP AS THE VICTIMS ARE MADE TO SPEND MORE THAN THEY HAVE TO SATISFY THOSE WHO ARE DOING NOTHING. TODAY 16TH FEBRUARY 2010 AS THE SUNSET, IT SETS IN PLACE A TERROR FOR MANY WHO FELT THEY WERE SAFE TO CONTINUE AS THEY HAVE BEFORE UNAWARE THAT THE ROPES ON BOTH ENDS HAVE BURNT OUT. THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TAKEN FOR GRANTED SHALL ARISE AND MOVE THE COUNTRY FORWARD AS ACCOUNTABILITY IS THE PHASE AS THE SUNRISE BRINGS 17TH FEBRUARY 2010, A NEW DAY IN THE BAHAMAS FOR SETTING THE CAPTIVES FREE AND SWIFT PUNISHMENT FOR THE REAL CRIMINALS IN THE COUNTRY WHO HAVE BEEN HIDDEN FROM VIEW OF MANY. TREMBLE NOT PEOPLE THEY DID IT IN SECRET AND IT SHALL BE MADE OPEN FOR THE SAKE OF SEEKING CHARACTER AND NOT JUST FACES OR NAMES, IT IS THE HEART THAT SHOWS. GOD IS THE ONE TO TRUST. HE DOES EXIST AND PROVES IT WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT.
