THE General Manager of the Marley Resort and Spa quit in protest yesterday over comments from the company's owner Stephanie Marley.
Barbara Hanna Cox walked out after Ms Marley - daughter of reggae legend, Bob - blamed the former Bahamas Hotel Association President, along with other managers and staff, for causing the resort to operate at a loss.
Facing complaints carried in this newspaper over the last two weeks about ongoing employee salary payment delays at the Cable Beach hotel, Ms Marley alleged that the Bahamian workforce brought the situation on themselves.
She claims many lack the hard work ethic of Jamaicans and seem to think the Marley family have a "pot of gold" to keep the business running out of their own pockets.
"Eighty per cent of staff at the resort work really well with supervision" while the rest "are not worth the payroll," said Ms Marley.
The businesswoman stated that she and her mother, Bob's wife Rita, have never made a penny from the resort during its two years in operation, and revealed that she is considering firing 20 per cent of her 38-strong workforce who she blamed for profit-losing "inefficiencies" which have taken a toll on its finances.
"We've never faced anything like this in our 20 years in the tourism and music business," said Ms Marley, who has served as the Managing Director of the Bob Marley Foundation, Bob Marley Museum, Tuff Gong International, Tuff Gong Recording and the Rita Marley Foundation in Jamaica.
According to the company director, in addition to staff cutbacks there is a possibility the 16-room resort may be closed down entirely on a temporary basis while she find replacement employees.
In the face of cash flow problems, the Jamaican businesswoman admitted that the company has been seeking to obtain an overdraft facility from a local Bahamian bank to assist with cash flow, but attempts over "a couple of months" to secure this arrangement have not been successful.
"We're urging them that we cannot keep operating without an overdraft," she said, when asked about the salary delays.
Ms Marley's critical comments relative to general manager and former Bahamas Hotel Association Barbara Hanna Cox led to Mrs Hanna Cox quitting her job with immediate effect yesterday afternoon.
Mrs Hanna Cox, who said she "came out of retirement" to work at the hotel property in August 2008, has denied Ms Marley's accusations about her management style, claiming it makes no sense given that the Resort boss allegedly asked her to stay on for an extra three months when she tendered her resignation in February of this year.
Mrs Hanna Cox said her decision at that time was in most part due to the "differences of opinion" between she and Ms Marley. "I did a great job," she told The Tribune.
Meanwhile, Ms Marley claimed she had personally been concerned about rooms at the resort being sold for less than 50 per cent of the average $395 a night she had authorised and she had "not received an explanation in five weeks" from Mrs Hanna Cox as to why this was.
However, after Ms Hanna Cox announced she was quitting as general manager yesterday, Ms Marley called this newspaper again to state that it was not Mrs Hanna Cox alone that she was blaming for the resort's financial tribulations.
"There are other managers and heads of departments so it would not be fair to say it is her fault personally," she said.
The dramatic turn of events comes after The Tribune has for weeks reported the concerns of staff members who were faced with unexplained salary delays. Some employees claimed they had not been paid for as long as a month, and others, up to two weeks, although this period of time was disputed by Ms Marley who said just 50 per cent of staff are owed a week's pay while the rest have been fully compensated.
Defending the company's position over the salary issues, Ms Marley told this newspaper she and her mother, Rita, have personally paid "hundreds of thousands" of dollars out of their own pockets to fund the salaries of their Bahamian staff over the last two years.
However, she said that in light of certain staff member's continued wastage of resources like electricity and water, refusal to abide by workplace "protocol" and other issues, the two Marleys have decided this "has to stop".
"We've reached the point where business has to be business," she said. "There's alot of wastage going on and they think that because we are Marleys we can afford it but we can't continue to fund the resort with it operating at a loss for two years."
She said salary delays were likely to continue for now until steps can be taken to turn the business around. "The funds are not in the account due to slackness and negligence," said Ms Marley.
However, the resort director denied that the wage delays are not punitive, saying that she and her family operate their business based on the "One love" philosophy popularised by their father.
"It's got nothing to do with penalising them. I wouldn't penalise them. What we should do is get them off the payroll, not bring them in and not pay them," said Ms Marley, adding that she has already called for certain staff who have been "repeatedly negligent" to be let go, but this has not happened.
As a result of salary delays, significant number of employees decided not to show up to work this week, and yesterday one employee claimed just 11 of the 38 employees were at work.
It is not clear how many were scheduled to be at work, as Ms Marley claims that "90 per cent" of staff have recently been put on a three day rotational work week in order to cut costs.
Speaking with The Tribune on condition of anonymity, several employees - none of whom are unionised - have expressed their frustration over the indefinite salary setbacks, telling of how the cash shortfalls have not only impacted their ability to meet their financial responsibilities, but is also jeopardising service levels at the resort.
They want the Department of Labour to step in and address the challenging working conditions. Deputy Director at the Department of Labour, Josephine Bennons, said last week that if workers wish to see their salary issues addressed they must each individually file a trade dispute with the Labour Board.

Title: Helping Ms. Marley..
NOTE: The word "resort" in this comment is being used in quotes, as it seems that Ms. Marley is using a bit of hubris in self-describing a 16 room facility as a "resort."
.
Ms. Marley's dilemma: "Meanwhile, Ms Marley claimed she had personally been concerned about rooms at the resort being sold for less than 50 per cent of the average $395 a night she had authorised and she had "not received an explanation in five weeks" from Mrs Hanna Cox as to why this was."
.
Ms Marley seems to be unfamiliar with "supply and demand" economics. Perhaps some of the high school students can explain the effect of worldwide economic collapse on the Bahamas Tourism industry. Then, perhaps, the student can explain to Ms. Marley that $395 per night is patently not competitive with the amounts that other "resorts" are charging.
.
Ms. Marley's dilemma: "She said salary delays were likely to continue for now until steps can be taken to turn the business around. "The funds are not in the account due to slackness and negligence," said Ms Marley. "
.
Assuming that Ms Marley is the defacto head of management for this "resort" facility, and that workers have been hired for an agreed upon pay rate, and after performing the agreed work, the Ms Marley is intentionally not permitting the accounting department of the "resort" to compensate the worker for the agreed upon pay rate after receiving the benefit of the worker's efforts, that there would seem to be malfeasance on Ms Marley's watch.
.
Yes, this commenter can certainly agree that there is "slackness and negligence." Specifically, Ms Marley is being slack in her ability to do her job of paying the workers after they have performed the work, and indeed Ms Marley seems to be guilty of negligence in her management of the "resort" accounting department. I'm not a lawyer, so I cannot speak to which laws are possibly being broken by an owner specifically refusing to pay a hired laborer for work performed.
.
And then the statement of, "She said salary delays were likely to continue for now until steps can be taken to turn the business around."
.
Let us try to re-phrase this statement so that it makes sense to the general public. "Ms Marley, being unable to competently manage the resources of the Cable 'resort' is going to CONTINUE to use her labor force to finance her poorly managed resources. The employees are becoming defacto "investors" to the property by Ms Marley's refusal to pay their wage. Whatever amount Ms Marley is illegally withholding from the employee would seem to be an equal dollar amount that the employee has accrued as a now partial owner of the property, due to Ms Marley's specific refusal to pay for the work agreed and rendered by the employee.
.
Of course, if this previous statement is incorrect, then Ms Marley would seem to be spearheading an intentional criminal conspiracy to deprive employees of earned income. Perhaps it falls under some "theft of services" law.
.
No matter how you might slice it, Ms Marley is not entitled to use her "One Love" method of management to fund her enterprise which is evidently been managed from the top into possible criminal activity. I would not allow the insult of asking, "Who the heck does Ms Marley think she is," in choosing which laws to personally direct her accounting department to disobey.
.
Ms Marley, it is NOT the employee's job to see to the financial sufficiency of your company. The employees are "work for hire," unless you are not permitted by any law that I know, to withhold the payment of their hire because you have mismanaged your property, to where you have an unreasonable expectation of the value of the services that you are providing to the customer, then using your own employees to finance the shortfall until you can figure out a way to correct your own management shortcomings.
.
Wow, what lucky people you must have working for the "One Love" management style. Most of us would prefer an earned wage for services provided, rather than being paid "at a future time when top management decides it has fixed its own inefficiencies."
.
Ms Marley's dilemma: ""We've never faced anything like this in our 20 years in the tourism and music business," said Ms Marley"
.
Perhaps Ms. Marley needs to find another means of making an income. She doesn't seem very good at basic accounting in this "resort," and her "One Love" management style is patently a dismal failure. I wonder what her father would have done if he had performed a concert, then the concert promoter said, "I didn't make as much money as I expected, therefore you should continue to perform additional concerts until we decide we have made enough.
.
.
YOU KNOW what he would have said..

Title: The people in power would like us to believe that we all have the same interests. We don't.
The people in power would like us to believe that we all have the same interests. We don't.
Their is the interest of the ordinary worker, and the interest of Rich investors. Security in the Bahamas is not just building a major resort every 5 to 10 years. To Most people having security means having a place to live, having a job, having affordable health care.
Declaration of Independence: We held these truths to be self evident. That all men are created equal. They are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
To secure these rights Governments are instituted among men deriving there just powers from the consent of the Governed that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.
There has always been a conflict between the ideals of the people set forth in the declaration of independence and the interests of the wealthy classes expressed in the constitution.
I know this een America but we still got to know our own rights and fight for our own rights. we should know what other people's freedoms are and look at ourselves to whether if we have any or little freedoms.

same problems when I worked for them at MRS and I am Jamaican. The comments quoted by the owner dont seem very "One Love" but then thats Stephanie. Not very professional and based on attitude not "Marley Like".
No such thing as bad staff only bad managers/owners. If they are bad staff then if you manage properly you retrain or replace. Same with income and expenses. Make decisions to survive, be proactive But thats not Stephanie.

Title: Pay The Workers
Stop beating the Bahamaians up. Bahamians are hard working people, just because a small percentage does not perform they way they should, we tend to beat everyone else up and group them with all the bad workers, lets stop that. The Marley's are bad paying owners, before the resort was in the picture they had a problem with paying. Pay the workers and stop make excuses.

In response to the comment written by "Abs On" I must say that the Marley recuited a fine group for employees when they opened. The staff became disgruntle after only 4 weeks Stephanie was unable to pay. It took a Bahamian to market the Resort and bring her expertise to the company. They did not realise this until month of Stephanie paying a Sale & marketing company from the US $10,000.00 per month and they never sold 1 room, not friggin One. So ask Stephanie why did she have the Company on her payroll for more than a Year, this money could have been saved to run the Resort. Not all Bahamians are LAZY. Maybe she should take the Resort to China. cause its obvious they want cheap labour. The marleys are truly dishonest, when business was good and they made money, they themselve request the money for personal use. On one occassion a new truck was purcahsed and the owner drove it for 2 day after which it was parked. She left the island two day after the purchase knowing that the staff was not paid and supplies were needed to run the resort. I'm not saying the they shouldn't treat themselve to a gift, but take care of business FIRST..... Not only were the staff not paid, but there were numerous vendor who only did CASH business with them.

This labour officer mentioned in your article is a poor excuse of a civil servant. She appears to be sadly lacking in the expertise to do her job.

Title: Marley Resort
Stephanie said it well. In fact she was kind. I would have said "Bahamians are the LAZIEST SOBS on the planet". They want to do as they like, when they like and expect to get paid. It's all around. Just today my wife, 7 year old and I walked out of a restaurant on Arawak Cay because of delayed service and staff walking around staring into space. Bahamians have NO sense of urgency from top down. Starting with the Prime Minister, people show up unapologetically late. Time means nothing to them. Being late is costly and disrespectful. Just look at the streets in the morning with the traffic mess. Most people are meant to be at work by 9 am but the roads are still packed and no rush to get to work because it can all be blamed on traffic, especially Government workers where they know that none of our "ballsless" politicians will do a thing about it. I do admit that Stephanie should take responsibility because she's gotten the best advice and chose to ignore it. 90% of the staff should have been let go 2 years ago. Occupancy at the Resort dictates so. 4 hard working Chinese could run that place straight into the black and 38 "dumb and lazy" Bahamians will surely see it ruined. They think people invest in businesses to employ them. Let them go Stephanie. Sadly though, Bahamian Immigration now has it in for the Marley's for calling Bahamians lazy, an indisputable fact. Thus she will not get the 4 hard working Chinese needed to run the Resort.

Title: "OBEAH, DON'T WORK NO MORE"
MAYBE STEAPHANIE NEED TO STOP SPRINKLING GOAT BLOOD ROUND THE PLACE. STOP BURNING THEM DAMN CANDLES , STOP PURING 100% WHITE RUM IN YOUR SPA, TRYING TO FEED THE SPIRITS. THE MARLEYS NEED TO START PRAYING TO THE ONE AND ONLY GOD TRUE GOD. THIS IS THE BAHAMAS NOT THE MOUNTAINS, TAKE THE PRACTICE BACK. THE BAHAMIAN PEOPLE ARE USE TO BEING PAID FROM THEIR EMPLOYERS. STEPHANIE THINKS SHE'S IN JAMAICA. THATS WHY SHE BOUGHT THE FORMER OPERATIONS MANAGER & HOUSEKEEPING MANAGER FROM JAMAICA AND THEY WERE PAID $400.00 PER WEEK FOR THE OP MANAGER & $200.00 PER WEEK FOR THE HK MANAGER AND THE HK MANAGER HAD TO PAY STEPHANIE $200.00 PER MONTH FOR LIVING IN OUR HOUSE ON PROPERTY. WE BAHAMIANS KNOW WHAT IT IS TO LIVE. THIS THESE TO EX-PAT THOUGHT THIS WAS A KING'S SALARY.
SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED IN 1834.
IF YOU WERE PAYING THE STAFF ON TIME YOU WOULD'VE SEEN THE RESULT. "Welcome to The Bahamas."

Title: " ASK US"
I was employed at the Resort from the last "Grand Opening" which was held on June 16th 2008, which was the resorts 3rd "Grand Opening". In my opinin every employee that start during that time was truly passionate and were well trained in the service industry. First let me say the resort opened in June, the following month July we started to experience late payroll. Some weeks we had to wait for the Bar to make money to be paid. This continued throughout the month of September until they changed the pay date to bi-weekly and it was "WEAKLY". This was when it stared to get out of controll. I agree sometimes the service was horrible, however this was due to the majority of time we were unable to deliver the tangible requests. Can you imagine a guest calling for toilet paper, soap or other amenties and we did have have any. In the beginning, because we were passionate about delivering world class service and we realized that "Service" to us was truly bigger than than the "Marleys" we would have to purchase these items when requested by the guest. Even though we were not being paid on time. To us it meant being an Ambassador for our Country. On numerous occassions we could not deliver exceptional service because we could not have the supplies needed. Customers would come to the restaurant and hell yea the service was slow because 8 out of 10 times the server had to run across the street to the store to buy an ingredient for the order. It was not until Mrs. Barbara Hanna-Cox joined the team the hotel started to get actual "PAYING" customers. Ask them about Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, Majestic Tours, Altours etc. Obviously the Marleys don't understand how the hotel industry operates when you booked your reservation with one of those Companies. Its been a year now and they still can't understand. Check out Atlantis which is a world class resort and they we selling room dirt cheap. Do they think that because they are the "MARLEYS" the resort would be 100% at all time? With those outrageous room rate starting at $425.00 p n plus 12% tax, who could afford to pay this rate, ITS A RECESSION, please Stephanie pull your head out of you ***. Mrs. Hanna-Cox was the "BEST" thing that happen to the Resort.
Well what did they expect? When you work you should be paid. Sometimes it was hard, can you imagine showing up for work daily and expected to smile and deliver exceptional world class service and my bill are overdue, salary sometime 7 weeks late. hats off to all of you who can. They need to except responsiblity for ALL the NEGATIVE that impacted the Resort. PAY YOUR STAFF.

Title: been there, know dat
My wife and I took friends who arrived by cruiseship to the Marley resort. We looked forward to lunch and cocktails. The service was the worst I've ever seen in Nassau... that's bad! Nobody knew how to mix drinks until we offered to show them how. It was horrible service in a nice place. After about an hour of sipping a crappy drink we left without paying... nobody cared or said a word.

Title: Marley Resort
It is most unfortunate an establishment such as this claims the low occupancy rate is due to staff wasteage/porformance, the Bahamas Hotel Association, and the inability to attain a bank over-draft. Ms. Marley has to assume responsibilty of the Resort and Spa financial deficiences. The non-payment of workers is clearly a violation of labor laws and this breach of contract can be taken to court. It is obvious The Marleys exist in the Bahamas due to the ability to promote Bob Marley's Legacy and profit from it, if it were not so the Resort would be in Jamaica. It is common knowledge the Bahamian dollar is very strong in this region and certainly in the Carribbean, therefore, if Ms. Marley was soo intent to close she would have done so and not seek additional cash flow in the form of an over-draft. Pay the staff, conduct your affairs professionally, and discontinue identifying Bahamians as lazy, after all anything negative that has impacted your property is a direct reflection on your inability to operate a 38 room Resort and Spa effectively.

Title: The Bahamas is not a paradise but a gangsters ghetto paradise!
The funds are not in the account due to slackness and negligence," said Ms Marley.
And some Bahamians have a problem with the Chinese coming here to do work with work permits from Bahamian Government. Its because : 1) Chinese got the money in the millions & 2) Chinese are better workers than Bahamians, because they have more get up and go and not slack and wateful and lazy as most Bahamians are. And thats coming from a Bahamian who works hard and get the job done.

Title: C'est la vie
Saying that the resort has not made a profit in two years is not news. How many resorts have made a profit in the last two years? Unfortunately, they opened their resort as a global recession began. Ask Crystal Palace, ask Atlantis.
On the other hand, her percentages are about correct. At least 15% of staff at most entities in the country are a waste. Another 50% needs constant supervision.
