HAITIAN Bahamian communities in Abaco's overcrowded shanty towns are still reeling six weeks after the Immigration Department allegedly used violence as they tore families apart in a large-scale apprehension exercise.

Residents of the Mud and Pigeon Peas in the heart of Marsh Harbour said Immigration and Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) officers carried cutlasses, threatened children with guns and used violence as they detained at least 165 Haitians of all ages and separated them from their families at around 4am on July 30.

Sources in the Mud, home to thousands of Haitians and Haitian Bahamians, told The Tribune how children were left behind as their parents were detained and then sent to Haiti, and Bahamians born of Haitian parents were forced to bid farewell to relatives and friends, some of whom had lived in the Bahamas for decades.

Anxiety and a solemn mood has since taken hold of the community which can only hope for better treatment in future.

A 30-year-old Haitian man who moved to the Bahamas 15 years ago, and lives in the Mud, said officers threatened children as young as five at gunpoint and ordered them to divulge their parents' whereabouts.

They knocked down doors and commanded men and women to come out of their homes without allowing them to dress before they were detained, he said.

And the man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he knows of a two-year-old child and an eight-year-old boy whose parents were sent to Haiti while they remain in the care of relatives or friends in the Mud.

He said: "Little kids were left here while their parents were sent back home. There is boy, eight or nine, who is staying with a friend of mine, and a little baby, two years old, whose parents were taken during the raid.

"They were very hard this time. They beat people, hitting them in the face so they are bleeding. They took money, so if they had $1,000 in their pocket they would maybe give them $50 and keep the rest. If they found food or drink in their homes they took it. They took everything.

"There was one man who came out in his boxer shorts and they didn't let him take anything, they just took him like that."

Haitian Bahamians, born in the Bahamas to Haitian parents, are angry about the way their parents, relatives and friends were treated in the raids at Sand Banks, near Treasure Cay, and the Mud and Pigeon Peas in Marsh Harbour.

They were among the crowd which swarmed the Immigration Department, across the street from the Mud, to take food and documents to those who were about to be sent back to Haiti on the morning after the raid, while employers lined up to present work permits to Immigration authorities.

The Tribune's source, who was taken to Nassau from Port-de-Paix, north west Haiti, at just 15, said he has held ten work permits since moving to the Bahamas.

But in order to obtain a new work permit he would need to return to Haiti to obtain a doctor's certificate and police certificate for the Immigration Department.

He said: "People who have their Bahamian passports or work permits feel they can sleep at night, but otherwise you are always glancing over your shoulder to see what's going on.

"The raids are becoming more frequent, and more violent.

"I don't like how they treat the people, the way they break down your door - they don't even wait for you to answer. I don't feel good there."

An Abaco employer who spoke to The Tribune on the condition of anonymity, criticised the application process for Haitian migrants he wants to hire.

The employer submitted a work permit application for a 35-year-old man who returned to Haiti in April, and is still waiting for his medical and police records to be approved by the Immigration Department so he can return to Marsh Harbour and start work.

He said: "Every time they switch jobs they have to go back to Haiti, but they only need to fulfill the same criteria they needed for the previous work permit.

"The government needs to have a clear guideline that tells you how eligible (an applicant) may be, taking into consideration whether they have had a work permit before or not.

"It's ridiculous that we are doing the right thing by applying for the permit for this guy, and he is down there starving."

Director of Immigration Jack Thompson said the Department is looking into ways of speeding up the application process, but must also ensure applicants are in good health and are not a threat to community safety before they allow them to live and work in the Bahamas.

He said the raids always provoke reaction and while they are appreciated by some, they are condemned by others.

Mr Thompson maintains the raid was carried out properly and the allegation of officers wielding cutlasses is "absurd".

He added: "Children should not be left behind and if that happened I don't know how it happened.

"I know there is a degree of anger, pain and disgust out there, but that should not happen. That's against everything we stand for.

"When we go in we deal with the whole family and work with them as a group. It makes no sense to take the mother and father and leave a child, I don't know what's happened but the people involved should step forward."

Title:

As I see it any where in the world you go you must get your documents in order so why not for THE BAHAMAS. So if there is a raid you can have your documents on hand, coming over on a boat then having kids here doesn't make you a bahamian, you are still a Haitian. The only person to blame or be angry at is the one that put in this place. If people and being deported then stop hiding the kids. Claim your nationality" Haitian" be proud and move on, or render onto the BAHAMIAN GOVERNMENT what they ask for because they didn't bring you here, yes to who say BAHAMIAN enforcement treat your family badly(the U.S coast guard turns HAITIAN vessels right back around if they spot them before landing), the government educate, give medical help and social services and more to haitian illegally or legal, just don't make the samme mistakes as the one's before you did.

I WANTED TO VISIT AGAIN FOR TEN DAYS IN EASTER UNTIL THE PERMIT IS READY BUT I'M SCARED TO DEATH OF THESE OFFICERS NOW.

Title: The Haitian Problem

I hope that one day God who is the creator of all of us will have some of you Bahamians regret your words. I have faith that it will happen because the God whom I serve is still alive. You claim that this country is a "christian" nation but you treat your brothers and sisters like dogs and the poor Haitians worse. People remember that today is my day and tommorw is yours. I really understand y u treat Haitians the way u do because i've witnessed the way u treat your blood relatives, worse than the potcakes of course. The only people that are treated fairly in The Bahamas are the rich investors who are really taking over because they are the ones who purchase land and you Bahamians work 4 them and take their foolishness by saying yes sir even when they treat you like slaves.

Title: What type of People are you

How does one take over someones land ? That right there shows how dumb and ignorant these bahamian people are. Talking about they dont want creole to be a second language.. But this is proclaimed a Christian nation so to say. Personally I feel they(bahamians) need to take the time and reflect. Where did you come from ? Do you really believe in GOD cause he does exist and is not sleeping. The world spins everyday proving there is a cycle, so you will reap what you sow. why is there so much hate? If you look at it the ones that are destroying the Bahamas are its own natives. They dont care its only an issue when they wanna pick on the foreign nationals, haitians in general. When they dont wanna look racist they name other foreign nationals just to make it look good. everybody needs help, and I mean everybody. When Bahamas cry they run to America so what makes them better. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Now what if you were in haiti position no job,no food, none of the essentials that you need to make it on a day 2 day basis. Plus you want a brighter future for your children n family.. What if the shoes was in your feet Bahamian nation what if? cause trust me the shoes could fit and I dont pray to GOD for that.. Reflect People.. Todays mistakes affect tomorrows future.. REFLECT.. The Bahamians are followers there are people that want to stand up for what is right but are scared. True leaders stand no matter who agrees w/you.. If the United States made a change towards Haiti as far as assisiting to help mold the country, observe the Bahamas peoples Observe!

Title: My Beloved Rosemarie

Whoever you are, what a Great person a true patriot of the Bahamas, Jehovah continue to Bless our Beloved country. We will only get this country back on the right course it was, a free democratic, God fearing, nonviolent, proud people, when we go for our Bahamian root.We have had productive people from other Caribbean now in their retirement years, but those coming here now(illegally) are users, ungrateful, evil intended,no need for bodies, wicked, and seriously jealous. So you are NOT a Bahamian if: your parents came here illegally, speak constantly foreign languages,puff-up at Bahamian customs, always badmouthing this country, violent prune, and look with Jezebel contempt.Jehovah God will continue to BLESS,COVER, my Beloved Bahamaland, because we got serious Warriors for the True God, and we strive for a better people, place and country, serving One God Jehovah through His Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.Keep moving onward, forward, together my true-true Bahamians for the better of the good country on planet earth, through the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus.Amen.

Title: Illegal Haitians

iI am a Bahamian and thank God for it and I am proud of my nationality, as should anyone. The ill treatment illegals is unwarranted and I feel force is only necessary when encountering uncooperative individuals. What intrigues me most is how often our laws and conventions are quoted in defence of migrants, while totalling ignoring the laws broken by these undocumented in coming here, squatting on lands and abusing our public health services. It seems strange to me that people who knowing break the law and evade it, now cry foul and "where is the justice" when it is applied.I recognize the contribution made by all foreigners even illegals, but often feel that the tolerance of Bahamians is exploited by these people and those who assist them.I feel that we have reached our saturation point with the amount of Haitians in particular , and can longer longer absorb the large numbers who come here.Hence our repatriations must be consistent, aggressive and humane.

Title: HAITIAN bAHAMIAN COMMUNITY

Personally, I feel as if we the bAHAMIAN PEOPLE have to send all illegal immigrants and their families back home or we will soon find ourselves to be like South Florida where the immigrants have completely taken over. They are also tooooo..... bold, bigety and persumptuous.Let us act NOW and SAVE OUR BAHAMALAND.

Title: Immigration Raids

I feel no weight for the illegal haitian, jamaician or Chinese who is deported from the Bahamas, we can not go to Haiti or Jamaica and overstay our time in these countries, so why should we allow them to do it in our country. Bahamians need to start looking out for the Bahamas. i am now 40 years where will my great grand children fit in the Bahamas if we allow illegal immigrants to stay here and fill up our country with their children. The immigration check should take place at PMH once a baby is born, the illegal parent should be sent back to where ever they came from. Haiti and Jamaica have economic problems but Bahamain look at it like this if they don't go home we'll have economic problems in the next 20 years. Is there a law/policy that says that person who have "work permits" should enroll their children in private schools? Why should illegal immigrants be allowed to dictate to the laws of the Bahamas? Immigration minister and chief keep the raids going, maybe those who want to come here will think twice. Bahamians let us take our country back and stop taking hand outs from illegals, cause you are suffering the our beautiful nation, Haitian always say that they can "buy" / "pay for" anything they want in the Bahamas. Please let us stop this "selling" of our nation.

Title: the hatianization of the bahamas

Mr Norman Solomon wrote a daily column in the tribune back in late sixties early seventies the hatianization of the bahamas/ the silent invasion if bahamians did there homework they would know this haiti was always that threat that is why the government put in its constitution after inderpendence that if you born in the bahamas by mostly hatian descend you are not a bahamian to try and dicourage their movement towards the bahamas but apperently it did not work because in the eighties hatians came here in droves until they have the numbers in our m,ajority rule country believe it or not that was the origanal plan ask Mr Norman Soloman or do your research in the tribune daily coloum of the sixties and early seventies

Title: Haitians Are Problems

Haitians as a people have been known for extreme violents for hundreds of years. Of course as with everything else there are a percentage of them that are nice people. That being said, the violent ones, and there are hundreds of thousands of them are the ones that I am most concerned about. These violent murderus Haitians have no compassion for there own people and chop them up and shot them like cattle with no problem. One can imagine what these Haitian animals will do when they meet the avaerage dorcile Bahamian. Where did the Violent Ton Ton Macoot go after the fall of Baby Doc? The Bahamas? What would happen to the Bahamas if 10,000 of these violent Haitian animals took root here. Could the police and defence force protect us? They are unable to even protect us from Bahamian criminal animals so I doubt they will have any effect on a new, unknown real threat like Haitian murderers. I vote to not find out, GET THE HAITIANS AND JAMAICANS OUT OF THE BAHAMAS. Haitians are the largest threat to the soveranty of the Bahamas. Move the defence force main focus and base from coral harbour to Inagua / Mayaguana where interdiction is most probabale.

Title: WTF

The slant of the article is interesting. Words like "allegedly" and "anonymous source" lead the reader to slightly discredit the account of the raid made by residents of the Haitian community, while there are direct quotations from Immigration Officials (the article ends with one, a lasting impression) saying otherwise...hmmm...

Title: Immigration's raid

Anyone who does not belong here whether black or white and who hasn't gone through the legal procedures requiredby immigration should be sent back to their home country. There are Haitians who believe that since they've been here so long they have rights here, they don't. Keep up the good work Immigration!! Our lands and resources have to be preserved for Bahamians!

Title: Right is right and wrong is wrong

I am a bahamian and I do not condone ANY maltreatment of haitian people because they are people too. I myself grew up around them when i visited my mother in the summer in the "ghettos" of Nassau. Which is why it is soo funny how everyone seems to think that all illegals here are such a wonderful asset to the Bahamas. Haitians and Jamaicans add to our crime problem just like Bahamians do and some are JUST as rude. I welcome any person who will come to our land to help DEVELOP the nation, but those who come and only squat, weild cutlasses when argument arises, sell drugs and carry out mafia style hits are not helping and need to stay where they are because they are only making our country worse. If you want to come here, it should be done right. As illegals add to the problem when they born children who become stateless and then turn to crime because society will not accept them. WE can only sustain so many people. Thats the honest truth. As for those people who claim they are not coming to the Bahamas anymore...fine. Its only a matter of time anyway before noone will be able to AFFord to come here and we will find a way to get by as we always do. Maybe the chinese will come as they are set to be the next dominating nation :) It amuses me how tourists are always talking about how we treat haitians unfairly but America don't even tolerate these people. They turn them back around right on the water whether or not those boats are sinking but they'll allow the cubans with the "nicer" complexion and the "pretty hair" to stay once their foot hit soil. While it may be the same meal everyday, something is better than the nothing most would have gotten in their hometown in Haiti, and a crowded room is better than the ocean floor some of them might've seen if the Americans had spotted them and turned them around. In everything there can be improvement, and if these raids are happening like some are saying something NEEDS to be done. but PLEASE people don't sit there and say all these people are God's gift to our society and we mistreat everyone because it is not true. While we can do better, at least we are trying.

Title: AFRICAN DESENDANT

IF U TRY TO GO TO A BEACH IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE ALL THE BEACH FRONT PROPERTY IS NOW PRIVATE PROPERTY OWNED BY FORIEGNERS OR LOCAL BAHAMIANS, WHO; FACE IT ARE WHITE, MAJORITY OF THE TIMES... THE CONTRY IS BEING SOLD FROM RIGHT BENEATH YOUR FEET WHILE YOU ARE BEING DISTRACTED BY THIS NONSENSE OF A FORIEGN INVASION AND USE OF SCARE TACTICS... --"HATIANS AND JAMAICANS ARE TAKING OVER". THEY ARE THE BOOGIE MAN...... --WELL IF WE DONT WAKE UP AND START TO EDUCATE OURSELVES TO WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON, AND WHO THE REAL ENEMY IS IT WILL BE TOO LATE FOR OUR SONS AND GRANDSONS.... TAKE YOUR FOCUS OFF THE HATIANS AND JAMAICANS FOR A WHILE... YOU HAVE PERSECUTED THEM FOR TOO LONG AND YET YOU HAVE NO FOWARD PROGRESS TO SHOW FOR IT. THEREFORE THAT ALONE PROVES THEY ARE NOT YOUR REAL PROBLEM.... WAKE UP MY PEOPLE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.. WAKE UP MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS, WAKE UP!

Title: SELF HATRED IS DESTROYING US ALL

I FEEL SO SAD FOR ANY BLACK PERSON FROM THE BAHAMAS WHO THINKS HE OR SHE IS ANY BETTER THAN A BLACK PERSON FROM JAMAICA OR HAITI. THE FACT IS WE ARE ALL DESENDANTS OF SLAVES BROUGHT TO THE NEW WORLD FROM AFRICA. IF NOT FOR THIS HIDEOUS PRACTICE CALLED THE SLAVE TRADE WE WOULD ALL BE LIVING IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF AFRICA. THERE WOULD BE NO SUCH THING AS BAHAMIANS OR HATIANS OR JAMAICANS. WE WOULD ALL BE AFRICANS. BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED FOR OVER FIVE HUNDRED YEARS TO HATE OURSELVES IT IS CULMINATING IN THE FORM OF BAHAMIANS AND THEIR HATRED FOR FORIEGNERS. THE FACT IS WHEN A BAHAMIAN LOOKS AT A JAMAICIAN OR HAITIAN THEY SEE THEMSELVES. THEREFORE BECAUSE OF THIS LEARNED HATRED FOR ANYTHING BLACK THEY REACT WITH ANGER AND DISDAIN. THE TRUTH IS YOU CANNOT HATE A HATIAN OR JAMAICAN AND SAY YOU DONT HATE YOUR FELLOW BAHAMIAN, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE. YOU ARE ALL AFRICANS. IT IS THIS SELF HATRED THAT DRIVES BLACK PEOPLE TO COMMIT CRIMES AGAINST EACH OTHER. IT IS THIS SELF HATRED THAT CAUSES BLACK PEOPLE TO ACCEPT ALL THAT IS WHITE AND REJECT ALL THAT IS BLACK. IT IS THIS SAME SELF HATRED THAT DRIVES THE GOVERNMENT TO LAUNCH THESE INHUMANE ACTS OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS MEMBERS OF ITS OWN RACE. IT IS THIS SAME SELF HATRED THAT ALLOWS BLACK PEOPLE TO BE DIVIDED AND CONQUERED.. JUST IMAGINE IF JAMAICA, HAITI AND THE BAHAMAS WAS A UNITED COALITION OF COUNTRIES WITH THE SAME AGENDA AND SIMILAR GOALS. IMAGINE IF THESE PEOPLE SUPPORTED AND ENCOURAGED EACH OTHER TO STRIVE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW. JUST IMAGINE IF THE COLOR OF THE SKIN HAD NO IMPACT ON YOUR STATUS OR OPPORTUNITIES. BUT THE REALITY IS AS LONG AS BAHAMIANS CONTINUE TO THINK WITH THE REASONING OF THE COLONIALIST MENTALITY THERE WILL ALWAYS BE CHAOS AND DIVERSIONS.. WHILE WE FOCUS ON HATIANS, JAMAICANS AND EACH OTHER WHO HAVE NOTHING THE REAL ENEMY IS BUSY TAKING ALL HE CAN RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES, BECAUSE WE ARE SO CAUGHT UP IN THE HATING AND DOWNPRESSING OF OUR FELLOW AFRICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS. TAKE A LOOK AROUND YOU FOR A MINUTE AND SEE WHO REALLY HAS ALL THE LAND AND MONEY.. IT IS NOT THE HATIANS OR JAMAICANS.. IF THEY REALLY DID YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TREAT THEM THAT WAY... MONEY AND LAND IS POWER.............

Title: Bahamians need to face the truth...

Bahamians need to understand that the tactics Immigration Officers use are inhumane. No body would like there door being bust down during the hours of 12 and 4 in the morning. Immigration Officers take no time to hear Haitians out when they are presenting documents to them that shows they have permits to be in The Bahamas. Immigration & Defense Force Officers do abuse illegals weather it is during raids or at the Detention Center. A place that The Director of Immigration call a holding facility not a prison, the detainees are treated well there, medical facility is provided and a play ground for the children which they are allow to play on is all a BIG LIE!!! I was taken out of school and placed in the detention center for three weeks. During that time I prayed every night that the Lord would take away my life. The Detention Center is over crowded most of the time. I had to sleep outside behind the bathroom every night whereas others sleep along the building on the outside. What can two slices of bread or small bowl of oat meal and small cup of tea in the morning, two slices of bread with a small cup of juice at noon and in the afternoon a spoon of not cook properly rice and corn beef do for these people. Me and most of the other people would starve if it wasn't for the two visiting days that are allowed where family members and friends would bring food and clothes. While I was there I witnessed a Defense Force slap a young Haitian female and guns being pointed at children for wanting to play on the play ground or won't stand still to be counted. Tell me is that humane?

Title: How Dare You

I witnessed in disblief, Haitians living in a haitian village in Carmichael Road; attacking Bahamain Firefighters, as the firefighters attempted to put out a raging blaze that was caused by the congested, deplorable, un-livable conditions the haitians themselves created from there own neglect and ignorance. Those people, brandished cutlesses, 2 by 4's, and anything they could find to assault the firefighters, stating that the fire fighters had not done enough to save there homes, even accusing the firefighters of spraying there shanty houses with gas inorder to spread the fire. Their own ignorance and lack of common sense, created a unnecessary chaotic scene, that threatened the lives of BAHAMIAN civil servants; who are trained to save lives, NOT DEFEND THEIR OWN! ILLEGAL ENTRY of any country is a crime, regardless; LAND SQUATING is a crime; ASSUALT OF AN OFFICER be it a firefighter/policeman is a very serious offence; POSSESSION OF FALSE DOCUMENTS; amounts to FRAUD; AND THE LIST GOES ON; How dare you sit there and pretend to be all self righteous, saying that you will no longer venture to the Bahamas or spend your dollars here because we the Bahamian people have finally decided to defend our country, against an attack that is a Nation far greater than our own, relocating to our shore. How dare you America, when you yourselves have blatantly refused to provided proper assistance or refugee to those haitians in need and have single handly (IN MY VIEW) destroyed the Democracy of said Country with your arrogance and obvious destain for of the race. How dare you Britian, as you to are faced with a race war, in the midst of your own cities. You too have been accused of defending the future of your children; HOW MANY HAITIANS HAVE YOU INVITED TO YOU LAND? and HOW DARE YOU HAITIANS privilaged enough to be born on BAHAMIAN SOIL be so ungrateful as to the contributions of our great Bahama land to your people, to the Bahamian people for their gracious, understanding and hospitalbe ways; for the Bahamain governments acceptance and affirmation of your birth right, for the FREE BAHAMIAN education, medical care, LAND, utilities, produce, etc HOW DARE YOU ESPECIALLY!!!!! For as in any Democratic Country the punishment for Crimes and Crimes against the state is not FREE LAND and trimming, No. For to long you have been given the freedom to do, say and think as you feel when said actions are in the direct violations of our souvereignty!!!! Your actions suggest that you are infact not Bahamians as you have no love for our land, the laws of such and our people. Your love for a nation that you do not know will forever conflict and threaten the well being of this Country! LASTLY, the true question here is, WHAT WAS DONE TO THOSE BRAVE OFFICERS???

Title: Where are the priests and pastors?

Why aren't the churches protesting these actions? Regardless of their native origins, these are crimes against humanity. These are " God's Children" considered amongst the "least" among us. "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me." and " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" are words straight from Christ's mouth according to the scriptures. That our Bahamian clergy standby silently when our brothers and sisters are abused show that their concerns are not for the care of God's children but for the evil deeds of evil men. As a Bahamian, born of Bahamian parents and now living in America, I see the same evil parade as politics and nationalism and security. This too is inspired by evil people planting evil seeds in the soil of shallow minds. Ignorance spread the hatred by their shrill voices claiming our country, our soil when in reality they most likely own nothing that couldn't be taken from just as easily as freedom and peace are taken with these raids. Haitians are just as human as Bahamians and deserve the human right of all mankind regardless where they reside. However, mankind seems to be inherently ignorant and evil even as good souls do exist. Their silence is what makes this nonsense possible.

Title: Why am not surprise ...........

I am a Bahamian born to a foreingn parents and over the years I have realize some Bahamian people are selfish, small minded, greedy, lazy etc the list goes on. Bahamians feels like this bahamas belong to only them Well news flash there is alot of foreingner's who help build this country not only bahamian's ( if anything they are waiting when you get paid on friday to rob you thats how lazy they are , But they are complaining that foreigner's taking their job when they don't want to work. I found HAITIANS People to be hard working individuals they don't sit they ass down and expect everything suppose to come to them but some Bahamians does for some damn reason. Bahamian's don't like foreingner's and will never like them even if you create job's for them. SO TO THE LADY WHO SAID HAITIANS ONLY USING THEM I WILL SAY TO HER I WONDER WHO SHE'S USING BECAUSE ALL THE BIG JOBS HERE IN THE BAHAMAS ARE FOREIGNERS OWN SO THESE FOREIGNERS CREATE JOB'S FOR THESE STUPID Bahamian's who feel like Hatians are taking over which is bunch of b.s Maybe if yall help build yall country then yall wouldn't have to worry bout foreigners taking over.

Title: Haitian Bahamian Situation

I predict that one of two things will happen in the very near future in the Bahamas one day. Either the Bahamas will see every single foreigner gone from these shores, and then they will know who and what the Bahamas is really all about. The Bahamas is for Bahamians, but who is a Bahamian? Can “Rosemerie” tell me that she has no “Haitian” blood flowing in her veins? The Bahamas was built by the blood, sweat and tears of the Haitian and foreign people. For hundreds of years, Haitians have played an important role in the development of the Bahamas. Haiti used to and still will provide food for Bahamians to eat. What many “so called” Bahamians don’t realize is that Haitians have a large network that is not only in the Bahamas or in Haiti. They are well ingrained all over the world, especially in the United States, Europe and Canada, where the Bahamas look for their tourist dollars. Bahamians who travel must understand that the world had gotten smaller than it used to be. Whatever happens anywhere in the world, good or bad, is known immediately around the world. Haitians are well entrenched in Florida, Georgia, New York, Washington, Chicago, and you will find them throughout the 50 states, politically and economically. Be careful, which Haitian you all mess with, because you never know, what his brother, sister, child, mother, father, aunt, uncle, cousin or other relative will do in their reaction. Can you imagine, a group of Haitians or Cubans protesting at Port Everglades and the Port of Miami about how bad the Bahamians treat foreigners in this country. Think about it, is this what the Bahamas wants, when the Bahamas is slowly dying right now. The other thing I predict is that one day the government of the Bahamas’ Immigration department will deal effective, efficiently and expeditiously with all of the pending applications that have been there for many years. I certainly hope that this happens instead of the first prediction. How long do you think the Bahamas can survive with an economic or tourism boycott against the Bahamas? What would happen if every Haitian withdrew every dollar they have out of the Bahamian banks? How would BTC make it with no foreigners calling their country? How many nurses, doctors, hospital staff, immigration officers and teachers would be employed if all of these Haitians and other foreigners leave this country? What about the store owners, who will they sell their goods to? How will Bahamians make it then? I wish to see the day when Bahamian immigration officers will have no more work to do because there are no more Haitians and Jamaicans to chase around and abuse. The Bible says that there is a time for everything under the sun.

Title: @Tourist

Mr. Graham Russel, I am not sure where you are from, but I am sorry to hear you feel that way. The Bahamas has an advantage of other destinations in that we have a free press. Our free press tells the truth of what happens in our little country: both the good and the bad. On balance, there is far, far more good here than bad and Bahamians are generally respectful and kind people. I don't think you are taking away an honest opinion of our country and that is sad. We have a serious problem with illegal immigrants here and while no one should condone violence or force (and I certainly won't do it here) the immigration officials have a difficult job to do. Like America and its Mexicans and Europe with its Arabs and Africans, illegal immigration affects us all in our respective countries. To say that what we do though is infinitely worse and disgusting than what is happening anywhere else in the world is both naive and short sighted. The unethical treatment of people happens everywhere and for a variety of reasons. It may convenient for you to turn a blind eye to events in other places and condemn us, but it is still a blind eye being turned. We have our situation in the open and our young democracy is doing its best to handle the situation, but blatant unbalanced and thoughtless attacks aren't going to help anyone. I hope you rethink your position and recognize that we might not be perfect, but with our free and open press declaring our faults for the world to see, we can improve and improve a lot, unlike many other places where denial is always the first order of the day and there is no press to say otherwise anyway. Best wishes and I hope you rethink your position. We welcome you and anyone else to our beautiful isles and assure you that building Paradise isn't easy. ;-)

Title: Let's Get One thing Straight

You are making making a general assumption that all Haitians and Jamaicans are pleasant, approachable and ethical. This is not the case and the same applies to all Bahamians. You have the good and the bad in all! Not all Haitians/Jamaicans are an asset to the Bahamas. Some have found ways to be a drain on our health, housing, educational and correctional instituations. Some are our best teachers, students, lawyers and doctors. But get one this straight! Bahamians are owed something...... and that is RESPECT for the laws of our country. Many times it is the vast majority of illigal Haitian/Jamaicans that have the most to say about the ill treatment and how disgusting Bahamians are. When you visit a foreign country you must respect that countries laws and the time frame you are allowed to stay in that country. When you break those laws you reap the repercussions. It's that simple! That rule does not apply to just Haitians and Jamaicans only. It applies to everyone! BUT EVERYONE SHOULD ALSO BE TREATED WITH HUMAN DIGNITY AND UNDERSTANDING within this framework. If the allegations against the Immigration department is true in connection to these raids it should be addressed immediately and made to cease. Violence against any nationality should never be condoned or tollerated as it only breeds anger and leads to the break down of the society.

Title: Rosemarie is Foolish

The bahamas is the most cultureless country in the West Indies/carribean. Hatians/Jamaicans are an asset to the bahamas. When ever I come to the bahamas for business the bahamians are crass, rude, and you get this sense that they feel thay are owed something.................for what? Hatians and Jamaicans are pleasant, approachable, WORKING, ethical and have a rich history. Rosemarie, without haitians and jamicans the bahamas would be an overpriced bush. God forbid that a bahamian would have to do yardwork, I mean ......with the average student getting D's they shoudl all be entitled to jobs in high finance and manangement right?

Title: Modern Civilization. We are all human beings

Rosemerie, whatever planet you are from, you need help. I visited the Bahamas at least four times a year; the last time I was there would be the last time you'll see my tourist dollar. I understand that the laws of your country need to be respected, but human rights and human dignity are at risk here. United Nations and Geneva convention on human rights need to investigate the inhuman and cruel treatments against the Haitians in the Bahamas. The Bahamian government should be investigated for crime against humanity and gross violation against human rights. All democratic nations must respect the U.N. Declaration Universal of Human Rights Article 1. •All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Article 3. •Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. Article 5. •No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Article 6. •Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law. Article 7. •All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination. Article 9. •No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. Article 14. •(1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution. •(2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. Article 15. •(1) Everyone has the right to a nationality. •(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality. These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. Furthermore, the Constitution of 1973 of the Bahamas-7. (1) A person born in The Bahamas after 9th July 1973 neither of whose parents is a citizen of The Bahamas shall be entitled, upon making application on his attaining the age of eighteen years or within twelve months thereafter in such manner as may be prescribed, to be registered as a citizen of The Bahamas: Provided that if he is a citizen of some country other than The Bahamas he shall not be entitled to be registered as a citizen of The Bahamas under this Article unless he renounces his citizenship of that other country, takes the oath of allegiance and makes and registers such declaration of his intentions concerning residence as may be prescribed. The Bahamas violated the rights of the children under 18 years of age ( Article 15. •(1) Everyone has the right to a nationality.) Rosemerie said, "Good job Immigration! And there is no such thing as Bahamians born of Haitian parents. You are what your parents are, no matter where you born, check the laws." I am Haitian! I know the international laws including the laws of your country very well. You need to check the laws and learn to speak the Haitian Creole. Don't worry, we will not take over your country. "Noula"

Title: Immigration has to do something about the Haitians!!

Its about time Immigration got serious about their jobs! These Haitians have invaded our country and are taking over. Their vast numbers will easily outnumbers Bahamians in just a few years. Bahamians better stand up now for our country or we severely regret it later on. I am tired of seeing Haitians everywhere you turn and hearing that creole all over the place. This is The Bahamas, for Bahamians, not Haiti!!! They need to be sent a clear message, stay away, don't come here! Good job Immigration! And there is no such thing as Bahamians born of Haitian parents. You are what your parents are, no matter where you born, check the laws. Bahamians should have Bahamian blood, not Haitian running through there veins. Haitians do not love our country and are only using it for there financial gain. When you go to Fish Fry or the straw market, these creole talking Haitians serving tourists. My Lord, that's the impression tourists get, they think these Haitians are us. Its so sad...

Title: Disgusting

I will not take my holiday in the Bahamas ever again! The way you treat people is disgusting and you will never see any of my tourist money again. I'm boycotting the Bahamas and encouraging my friends and family to do the same based on your treatment of Haitians. You people are terrible.
