POLICE are hunting two vicious robbers who held a group of terrified tourists at gunpoint and made off with their cash and possessions.

The victims, understood to be Americans from a cruise ship, feared for their lives as they were held up.

And it is thought the attack may have major repercussions on Nassau's tourist trade, with would-be visitors fearing for their personal safety.

The 11-strong group of men and women were attacked at the top of the Queen's Staircase on Sunday morning.

They had arrived in Nassau on a cruise ship and were on a taxi cab tour of the capital's historic sites when their pleasant visit turned to terror as they viewed the 66 steps.

Two masked men approached on foot. One threatened the group with a handgun while the other stole cash and personal items from the visitors at around 11am.

It was the first robbery in the area this year according to Superintendent Elsworth Moss, and taxi drivers say it happened because there were no police officers securing the site as usual.

A taxi driver told The Tribune: "I am shocked it happened because usually the Commissioner of Police has a police presence there.

"The taxi drivers are very upset the robbery took place because their concern is the damaging effect it will have after the group returned to the ship and complained about it.

"We don't like the fact that it will have such a tremendous impact on tourism."

Like many visitors to Nassau, the group had been picked up from the port at Prince Charles Wharf downtown for a taxi tour of Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle, the watertower and the Queen's Staircase when they were robbed.

Superintendent Moss, in charge of the Criminal Detective Unit, said: "That area was always a challenge years ago, and one of the things the force did in conjunction with the tourism police and the tourism office was put police presence in those areas, and in areas where tourists normally visit, to make sure there was better security.

"Every robbery is a concern, whether the victims are tourists or local residents, it's a serious concern for us, but even more so with tourists because this is a tourism-orientated country.

"We are going to find out what happened and if there were any mistakes on our part, we will work to correct them."

Police investigations have not yet determined whether the masked men fled in a vehicle, and police have not issued a description of the robbers.

The tour group filed a crime report at the nearest police station immediately after they had been robbed. Police are now compiling a list of the stolen items.

Supt Moss said: "We will release details of the stolen items so people can look out for them, but we have not yet completed that stage of the investigation."

Anyone with any information which may assist police investigations into the matter should call police urgently on 911, 919 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 328-TIPS (8477).

Title: Tourist past but not future

I have been to all of the popular sites including the staircase and never felt threatened but that was some years ago. I think times have changed everywhere. Tourism should be expanded in your country with more local citizens involved where possible, not held back (or held up) by thugs. Everybody will lose and lose bad. I will wait about a return trip until I see drastic change concerning safety and tourism. You have a wonderful place to visit. Don't let it turn into something you cannot turn around.

Title: How bad is this

How sad is this. I was in Nassau back in April a passenger on NCL and I came back home and bragged about how lovely the place was and that was the best of the three Islands we went to. My girlfriend and I were downtown shopping alone and we loved it. I also spent time in Nassau back in 2000 and would never think something like this could happen there. I want to go back next year taking more family and friends since one of my friends have a Time Share there, now I do not think I will ever return and I will send these articles to my friend and beg her to sell. This is truly horrible.

Title: Thank you Alison

Thank you Alison for reasurring this 60 year old youngster. I know now that by me staying on the ship I would be deprieving myself of a wonderful historical tour. I would not get to see The Library that once was a jail (our mother was the town librarian for years), The Queen's Staircase and Fort Charlotte to name a few. My sister and I would take a historical tour over a day of shopping anytime. And Nassau is rich in culture and history. While we do enjoy shopping in different ports-of-call we find that getting out and meeting people in other countries and hearing about their culture and history makes our few hours of stay more enjoyable.

Title: this is not typical

Hi Rose Marie The story above is not typical of the experience of tourists in Nassau. While Bahamians would be the first to admit that crime is on the rise, the reason this story has received so many comments relative to others is because it is not a normal state of affairs for tourists to be the targets of crime, and you can judge this objectively by looking on the US State Department in relation to their advisory on crime in The Bahamas (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html#crime). Whilst you must take sensible precautions as you would in any city that has its share of poverty and social problems, there is no need to be in fear of leaving the ship. Enjoy your visit!

Title: Should I or shouldn't I

My sister and I are planning on taking a cruise to Nassau in January of 2010. After reading about this robbery here and on cruise critic dot com, from the tourists themselves, I am thinking of staying on the ship. The Queen's Staircase was one of the sites I had on my list of, must see list, but now I am having second thoughts. Can someone reassure me its safe. I'm 60 and my sister is 62. How safe will we be?

Title: Nassau is a nice place

WE love Nassau and have a dear friend we visit there often. She drives on of the taxis from the warf. I hope this does not deter people from visiting Nassau. Unfortunatly we have crime in our home towns as well.

Title: Another Example (Lack of Police )

This another example, we hold tourist as our bread and butteryet we do very little to protect their interest. Why for years have we not have Police assigned to areas frequented by our valued treasure? We boast so boldly about torism being our number one Industry, well if we dont buckle up it will be number one not in a nice way....

Title: There They Go Again

The morons are back at it again. It is ridiculous that our parliamentarians do not visualize the problems with are having with these uneducated, poorly bred idiots that roam the streets of Nassau every day. It is going to get worse than better if they don't change the laws and make it a very serious offence to harm tourists in this manner.

Title: Tourist Robbery

The crime situation always becomes a big issue when there are tourists involved!! What about us, Bahamian citizens who live here all year long, our kids in school, and we are paying taxes every day??? What about us??? There should be no difference made between us and visitors, we live with this fear every day, and no one has the balls to start taking care of this for once and for all!! Politicians, get a grip!!! Turnquest, clean this up!! Where is the leadership in the police force?? Commissioner, Stop being a yes man to the Ministers and do your job!! It would be so easy to clean this crime up, everyone in the force knows who the criminals are, the rank and file in CDU are getting more and more frustrated every day with this situation. Instead of spending millions in road improvement, build a bigger jail, keep every criminal who has multiple serious offenses locked up, NO bail, three strikes and you're in for life, and this nonsense will soon stop. The chance of being caught are so small right now, criminals will continue to rule us until we put a serious stop to this. Prime Minister, change your Minister of National Security out NOW!!

Title: Tourist Robbery

How much would it have cost to have a police officer permanently stationed around the Queen's Staircase? How much will it cost The Bahamas when word gets back to the cruise ship of the ordeal faced by these 11 tourists? How negligent can the Police Force be? Doesn't the Commissioner of Police understand that Nassau is a war zone and that tourists MUST be protected at whatever cost?

Title: Please lets open our eyes to wats going on

Its becoming inhumane for our bread and butter to be tampered with and for the Minister of National Security to continue to run on in public with the kind of foolishness dat he is. But lets look back and use Mr.Leslie Miller as a brief example before it happened to him he was just as dumb- founded as Tommy is to this vexing situation now he marching along with those grieving family, just hoping that one day justice will pravail. Let it happen to Mr. Tommy T and c how fast this problem will be solved, it only have to happen to one of our own so that you could start to take everyones life as serious as it should have been taken before. Now most people that depend on the tourism industry directly have to now wonder if tomorow the tourist is going to come back for them to make their couple dollars. one like me if i c my lfe is on the line no im not going that place cause the first time i escaped i may not b so lucky next time. the criminals of today will continue to do wat they do cause they no Tommy Gat They Back. They are the only set really that can proudly say Tommy T 4 Me.

Title: Tourism Shortfalls

Now I expect the Minister Of National Security and the Commissioner of police to show up and tell us again "DON'T PANIC". These two clowns need to pull their heads out their butts and see what the rest of us has seen for the last 20 years..OUT OF CONTROL CRIME!!

Title:

YES..It is now messing with our bread and butter BIG TIME!!! Please tell me WHY, WHY, on God's earth does it have to get to this, before we have police patrolling ALL of the forts, historic sites, hotels/restaurants strips where our tourists and locals walk and/or patronize??!! It makes me damn angry when I drive around town to see our tourist, our bread and butter, walking in some areas that I wouldn't walk and NOT a darn police in sight. If by chance you may see a patrol car, the windows are turned up and aircondition blowing. If someone tried to get their attention, they couldn't hear. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO FOOT PATROL??!! Mr. Minister of National Security, Mr. Commissioner of Police, please get it right. Crime is killing the Bahamas. How about bringing the lousy police officers from Exuma who don't know "MURDER" from "TRAFFIC ACCIDENT" and put them on the beat!!?? Maybe, just maybe, they would do a better job walking the streets with a hand held radio...and maybe, just maybe, capable of calling in to control room should they see a potential crime about to take place. Look what we've come to....Heaven help us all!!! Please tell me why there are no police officers on foot patrol from Fort Montagu in the east to Caves Village in the west??!!....PLEASE don't close the gate AFTER the horse has escaped. God bless the Bahamas!!

Title: FNM & PLP SUCK

The only people surprised by this are the FNM and PLP. 45 years of neglecting the needs of the Country relating to crime, stagnating growth and just plain stupidity by these two parties are finally cathing up with us. The Bahamas will end up worse than Jamiaca because we intrusted the Country to a bunch of sweet mouth lawyers who obviously are incapable of anything but talking, taking money and wasting time. The state of the Bahamas judiciary and crime in the Bahamas are blatant proof that the so called "learnered" group of PLP & FNM lawyers that ran the Country for 45 years are all total failers even at what they'er supposed to be trained in "LAW".
