Published On:Wednesday, October 21, 2009

11:27pm – Senior Justice Anita Allen discharged the jury in the Travolta attempted extortion trial from returning with a verdict at 10:54pm, almost nine hours after they began deliberating, informing them that two hours earlier there was an announcement at a political convention that one of the accused had been acquitted.

“We are very concerned in the interest of justice that it does not appear that there has been a communication from the jury room. Justice must not only be done, but seen to be done. I am very reluctant to discharge you,” she told the jurors.

No word yet  on when a retrial is likely to happen.

Title: Abaco Take Notice

If we could curtail stupid people having children with stupid people, perhaps we would have a nation of logical thinkers who can also spell properly.

Title: abaco

You are as ignorant as the PLP's who celebrated and the PLP who 'leaked' the info. Turning this into a political thing... stupid is as stupid does. There are people trying very hard to save this country from the very ignorance you are trying to defend. Shame on you as a Bahamian. This is about the Bahamas, not the PLP or FNM. It just so happens that the PLP's behaved liked ignorant buffons. Stupid behaviour is stupid behaviour, nothing to do with the stripes or spots of the cat!

Knowing how things work in this country, that leak was intentional to keep the 2 on trial out of jail a little longer!!!

Title: This is crazy

I think who ever that juror was needs to be prosecuted. They took an oath to never discuss the case out of court.... Yet again the world sees just how we are.

Title: Unbelievable

I am stunned. Was jury tampering involved here? Or was this just a ploy to "rally the troops"? I think the person that caused this mistrial should be forced to pay for the new trial. And that's my two cents!!

Title: TIRED OF THIS NONSENSE

Picewell must tender his resignation immediately.

Title: Abaco, tired? Many miles to go

Well Abaco, if you are tired of the PLP being blamed for things, hopefully as a member of that party you can impress upon officials to do the right thing in accordance with our laws and stop bending/breaking them to suit their purpose. However, speaking as someone who has had dealings with this party in the 70's, and suffered systemic victimisation, it will be difficult because the PLP is steeped in corruption! In this case it appears that Mr. Forbes was privy to information from the court and by announcing it, he has thrown not only the jury member, himself and the PLP, but our entire country under the proverbial bus!

Title: Goodbye PLP

Congratulations to the judge for doing the right thing in ordering a retrial. How could Picewell make such an announcement when they jury was still deliberating? Nobody had been acquitted at that stage. The PLP may want change, but things will never change when those with the biggest mouths are shown for what they are ... FOOLS! This has destroyed what little credibility the PLP had to begin with.

I am tired of hearing u all complain about the PLP. Why u dont start saying bout the FNM, they are the gubment. They are in charge, they are screwin' tings up. But no, this is an FNM mouthpiece, the controlled bahamas media. The world economy is part of the blame for things gone wrong, but not entirely. The FNM has once again mismanaged the economy and corruption is lurking around. But no, blame everything on the PLP!! One day you all will wake up and smell the roses!!!

Title: The Culture Of PLP Is Corruptoin

Now once again the Bahamas is going to look bad because one(1) politician prematurely leak information to the public during a national convention. Put on your thinking cap Bahamians, you think Picewell would have made that annoucement If it wasn't confirm. The information leak out from one of the jurors to Picewell at the time of the convention. Now the commissioner of police has to launch an investigation to find out if Picewell was invovled in jury tampering

Title: SHAME ON PICEWELL FORBES

Its just goes to show how corrupt the PLP Is. The Jurors had accuited Bridgewater but senior jusitce Anita Allen didn't make the ruling public as yet. While the PLP convention was going on it is alledge that information leak out the diliberating room to picewell just as he went up to give his speech. Him wanting to excite the crowd announce the results not knowing that it would have gotten back to Anita Allen Now we have a mistrail shame on you picewell.

Title: Who called the clowns?

This is unbelievable! Totally irresponsible! Criminal! There must be an investigation and criminal charges. This makes all Bahamians look like crooked monkeys!

Title: read it again Bahamama

I know it's late and all, but read the story again bahamamama. No one was acquitted. someone said someone was at a political convention while the jury was still deliberating.... so the judge declared a mistrial because it could appear that there was a leak...... come on.....

Title: LOUSY REPORTING

This is the lousiest report on an explanation of what has happened in this trial. I am confused - one was acquitted but it was a mistrial? How was one acquitted if the jury wasn't through deliberating? What a waste of everyone's time, including the poor man (Travolta) that has had to go through with this disgrace of a trial. God help anyone really that is in search of justice within our court system.

Posted By: Patricia On: 10/22/2009

Title: Not Another Scandal

I cannot believe Picewell could be so irresponsible. What a clown! And to see them all rejoicing only portrayed us as people who condone criminal behaviour. Another black eye for The Bahamas. Picewell must pay for this. Pleasant and Tarino are guilty as sin.

Posted By: Joe Blow On: 10/22/2009

Title: UNBELIEVEABLE!

These PLP's can't help but screw tings up for the Bahamas! At least we have a judge who did the right thing. My lord. we must look like a bunch of crooks and or buffoons to the rest of the world now
