TWO men wielding shotguns robbed 18 tourists who were on an eco-tour yesterday.

The brutal thugs also gun-butted a Bahamian woman during the robbery, however her injuries are not life-threatening. She was the only one hurt during the hold-up.

The visitors, who were passengers on the Disney and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, were part of two separate groups touring the Bahamas Association for Social Health's (BASH) Earth Village in the former Perpall Tract Wellfield area when they were attacked at about 1pm.

The men tied up the Bahamian tour guide with the first group and ordered them to the ground before robbing them of money, passports, cell phones, credit cards and personal items.

During the robbery, a second group of visitors approached and were also held up.

National Security Minister Tommy Turnquest, flanked by Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson, several senior police officers and Ministry of Tourism officials, ordered an impromptu press conference at police headquarters last night.

Mr Turnquest told reporters the incident was one of grave concern.

"The last thing that we want to happen is to have our tourist destination marred by these thugs," he said.

The Minister said every available police unit was being utilisied to track down the suspects.

And he vowed that patrols would be stepped up in light of the recent spate of armed robberies throughout the capital.

Tourism Director General Vernice Walkine said incidents of this type make it "harder" for tourism officials "to promote the country as a place to consider for a vacation".

Terry Miller, Executive Director of BASH, said "no one was really injured" during the robbery.

The tourists were at the entrance to the Earth Village when they were accosted by the gunmen and robbed of jewelry, wallets and handbags.

An officer said the men attempted to steal "whatever they could take".

Swarmed

Within minutes, a large contingent of police swarmed the area. The quick response was praised by Mr Miller.

Last night two men were helping police with their inquiries.

Meanwhile, in another tourist-related matter, a 43-year-old Canadian man had his wallet snatched by a thief as he walked on Bay Street near Navy Lion Road. The man, who had his wallet in his hand after making a purchase at a nearby store, was walking with his brother at the time.

A 49-year-old man was arrested.

Title: Nonna

I have traveled to many Islands over the years, and although Nassau is not
one of my favorite~ I wouldn't stop going there because of the recent rash
of robberies.
Every travel destination has it's problems~ the people in Nassau as in most
islands depend on those cruise ships for income.
Even the nicest beaches have thiefs that wait for you to be in the water
leaving your purses and belongings on the beach.
And let's not bash the Islands, please! Where in the US is there a 100%
travel destination that hasn't experienced some bad elements among us.
And I'd like to address the person that listed their name as both Seth Goldstein and Dr. Goldstein NYNY, who wrote two ridiculous posts.
First of all negro is not spelled knee grows, and you asked "Where" the robbers
colored~ were you asking " Were" are you for real?
Do us all a favor spend your time opening a book and learning something.
Not trolling on the boards.

Title: And yours is full of ubiquitous gun toting sick pedophiles.

The fact is that the recent decline in hotel occupancy rates is due to the world wide recession period. The Bahamas continues to be the best choice in the world for a safe and fun filled vacation. This is evidenced by the millions of repeat visits of loyal and new tourists everyday.

FYI: Even persons with limited intellect know that, historically speaking, "war" is not characteristic of Bahamian culture as it is in so many other cultures. If you choose to miss out on the time of your life, that's your problem not ours.
Yes, aggressive sales people can be annoying. We all know how automobile sales people get really pushy at times. Nevertheless, on my vacations I would rather deal with aggressive sales people, than with ubiquitous gun toting sick pedophiles that have their eyes on my children.

Title: Going or not going to Nassau...not going there!?

I have reserved a cruise in the Bahamas and i am thinking not to go offshore in Nassau. I heard that sales person in port are agressive and violent crime against tourists has been increasing. I'm going to ask the Cruise Line to go somewhere else where crime will not be an issue. I am going on vacation not in a war zone where crime are ubiquitous.

Title: Crime in The Bahamas

If any tourist finds a place in this world that is 100 percent safe please let me know about it. The way I see it is if you change your Bahamas vacation plans you might as well stay home which probably isnt safe either.
I do not condone crime whatsoever, but to abandon a vacation to a country with 700 islands to select from for a vacation doesent make sense to me either. What about the family islands? I havent heard of any tourisit robberies on Abaco or Crooked Island. I question the real motivation of some of these comments which place a blanket denial on a Bahamian vacation. Most of us are black, not criminals.

Title: Cancelled Trip

After reading the many comments on the rise of crime in the Bahamas, my family and I will not be visiting your country. We were scheduled to visit this year on a cruise ship and have rescheduled our trip for another country instead of the Bahamas due to the crime there.
Too much murder and violence against tourists for me to feel comfortable bringing my family on vacation. We had heard it was beautiful and peaceful but, this does not appear to be the case. With 3 young children and my wife, I am much too concerned for their safety to visit the Bahamas now.

Title: Murder, Murder, Crime Crime

Tommy Turnquest is not qualified to do his job. Crime is going up and our tourist dollars are going down. If we do not bring back the death penalty, the criminals will take over our country. Guns, drugs, robbery and violence is commonplace now.
WHAT IS GOING ON ? Soon, we won't have a tourist left. THEN ! Watch how the crime gets even worse. PUNISH THESE CRIMINALS . DON'T MAKE THE TAXPAYERS FEED THESE KILLERS.

Title: Staying At Home By Choice

It seems to be increasingly dangerous for people to travel. Americans, Canadians, it doesn't really make any difference. There is an increase in this type of incident occurring. Take away the dollars brought in by tourism and a lot of these places may not be able to exist. I am so over the threat of violence and harm while traveling or visiting another country.I have no problem staying at home and pumping that money into our economy and our country!

Title: This must stop

I visited there years ago on my honeymoon. It is a beautiful place to see. My husband and I noticed that the police didnot carry guns. They had clubs and some had a dog. I felt very safe on Bay Street. Now I'm sorta of afraid. They must catch and punish these criminals. Because people will stop coming there and I know the country donot want to lose that money that tourism bring. So they better do something quick about this serious problem.

Title: scary to think

If tourism didn't exist??? what does the Bahamas have to offer the world??? Lets hope the current crime wave and violence is shelved quickly otherwise we could find the 80% of the Bahamas revenue going elsewhere, then what does the Bahamas have to offer? scary to think.

Title: Tourist

The government needs to go back to how it was in the 70's. Citizens of the Bahamas could not enter hotels, casinos, and other tourist destinations unless they was providing. I agree who was to be robbed on vacation. I can stay at home & take that risk.

Title: Maybe future tourist

I am from an island nation and I know this happens alot to tourists. It would be nice if the police in the islands really did their job and use all their resources to find these thugs , but alas it does not happen.
It is very sad that people pay their money to go to a country to be terrified.

Title: A future tourist

My family and I will be on a Disney cruise in January of 2010. I can assure you that when we anchor in the Bahamas we will NOT be getting off the ship. I would love to visit the island (we had planned a glass-bottom tour; a para sailing activity and a boat tour), but we have cancelled all island excursions. I can get robbed, stabbed and/or shot any day of the week in certain parts of the US, why put my family through the possibility while on vacation? I am surprised to hear that this sort of thing isn't immediately pounced upon with ALL of the Island's resources. I cannot imagine a bigger nightmare for the hard working, law abiding citizens who rely on the tourist dollar to make a living. I will also say that after this cruise I will next be going to Bermuda, where it is safe to walk the streets almost anywhere, even at night.

Title: As FNM as I am Tommy Turnquest should be replaced

It is my view that to date the present Minister of National Security leadership has been ineffect with respect to his Ministry's efforts in the fight againt crime in our country. I respectfully submit that a non political person should be given this position in our country.
Additionally, we have just appointed a new AG who simply got the job to fulfil his one of his resume goals. He will be ineffective and just a glamour boy in the post. Mr. Delaney has a holyier than Thou attitude, does not speak or give a single hoot about the ordinaryman on the street as he lives safe and sound behind the high gate of Lyford Cay. He has not set his foot in the Courts in years. He is totally out of touch with our Bahamian society and doesnt care at ALL. It is more important to him to drive around at the tax payers expense and feed his huge ego than to do what it takes to clean up the AGs office. What a waste of a time his appointment will be when the country cant afford TIME. The FNM government has to do BETTER as these are serious times.

Title: On the outside looking in

As a foreigner living here for only a short time, this crimewave will only stop when politicians on both sides get together with a common policy on fighting crime. But it will never happen because Bahamian politicians are only in this business to line their own pockets. They talk big but do little, and they'll continue to blame the country's problems on each other. If the law-abiding citizens of the Bahamas was real change, then dump the FNM and PLP, trust your instincts and find people who will serve YOUR needs. And remember, NEVER TRUST a person who says he wants to be a politician.

Title: Someone has to be accoutable......

Someone has to be accountable and in this case the blame is going to have to lay with the government. I want to address Justin and Tearsinheaven. I am not saying that our police officers are not doing a great job. Many of them are. What I am saying is that there is a point where help is needed. And we as a nation need to realize that we are in trouble and that possibly we can benefit from outside help. something has to be done. There are many persons out there who are not buying items from thugs/family members involved in criminal activity, these persons are the victims of the violent crimes. Gone are the days when persons just go and report petty housebreaking. They are breaking into your houses stealing what you have worked and sacrificed so hard for and raping and killing your wives and daughter as if they were animals. If you don't think we have a problem them something is wrong. What do you think is the solution to this grave situation that is facing our nation? Do you think it is sitting down and having discussions with these thugs. If they have no value for human life what make you think they have the insight to enter into discussions. What are they stealing for........They only want to covet that which is another mans. Life is about choices. Everyone knows right from wrong. Everyone understands that what is mine is mine and what is yours is your. But persons choose to commit crimes, they choose to rape, and rob. So we don't have a choice but to protect this country from the effects of social ills. They need to be dealt with. Many persons are committed to working along with law enforcement groups but the reality is we need help. We are a small nation of about 350,000 + persons.
We can't go around and take matters into our own hands because this will increase the lawlessness. That is why we have governments that put laws in place and ensure that they are enforced no matter who it is(brother, cousin, uncle, auntie, sister). Find them and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. If the laws are to mild.....go in and change them to meet the present needs of the nation. But definitely we will not last to long on this present tract. Change has to come swiftly.

Title: laying blame

i see where everyone is blaming one another for the problems that is in our community ,this has to stop and we as a people need to put our heads and minds together as one and lick this crime menace.i think that the police are doing a terrific job giving the limited resorses and the condition they have to work under.earlier in this month i had an opertunity to ride with a police officer who was assisting me with a complaint which should have taken about ten minutes, this task ended up taking over one hour because every time he tried to go to there a complaint of grater importance come up.i was informed that i was not allowed to come along but given the hour of night i was told that whatever happened i was not to get involved.after seeing now i believe, its no easy task that these brave men and women have to do ,so i say lets help them as best we could in their fight to make this a safe better country for our children and grandchildren.

Title: CRIME

Nothing but tears right now, as I read this article from abroad. It is also clear from the comments I read here, that we, as a people, are still not policically matured. STOP, STOP blaming the Government for everything that goes wrong in our socieity. "START WITH THE MAN IN THE MIRROR!". When the Mothers, Fathers, Cousins and everyone else who benefit from criminal proceeds, speak up and report the criminals they know. then we have a good start! How many persons, buy stolen goods? The next step is the rid the force of all those slack, lazy policemen who just collect a pay check. Splash water in the faces of those Pastors and congregation members, Wake UP!!! who profess christianity, sit in church for hours, but are the very same ones supporting these criminal elements. We need NOW a RADICAL REFORM. Bring in the SWAT team, foreign or otherwise, and then BRING OUT ALL THE BAHAMIAN PEOPLE ON FORT CHARLOTTE for a rally on Crime! WAKE UP BAHAMIANS, WE WILL BE NEXT ON THE POVERTY LINE, IF DO NOT TAKE A STAND....NOW IS THE TIME! Lastly, I applaud the Government, people only see the bad never the good! We are far better off with a FNM Government, than we would ever be with a PLP Government. you would be surprised to know who is sending out the criminals, just to spear the good record of the present Government, who looks out for all Bahamians, rather than the party, that known to take care of its own herd!

Title: Proactive vs. Reactive

Our government is a reactive governing body that waits until something happens before action or legislation is put in place. This is in and of itself the characteristics of poor leadership. The people of the Bahamas have been calling for the removal of the present Min of National Security due to his ineffectiveness as it relates to the capacity of this office. The Prime Minister, Min of National Security and the Commissioner of Police are not moved by the level of crime because they all walk around with their own personal security detail. Their families are protected and really and truly that is all that matters. What happens to the rest the citizens, residents and visitors is not that important ....according to them, we as a people can wait. What is so sad in this situation is how the government is undermining it's own efforts. The Min of Tourism has been doing an exceptional job marketing the Bahamas and opening our country up to different regions of the world and in addition spending millions of dollars to bring tourist to our shores amidst the global economic downturn. And it has been working. But here comes this great headline that will serve to cancel all that has been put in motion. Why has this been allowed to happen? Because the government refuses to have some backbone and get tough. Stop waiting for thing to happen before you act. Put measures in place and ensure that they are enforced. Do more than you are doing to bring this country online. The nation is out of control. Don't think that it can't happen to us,that tourist arrivals fall and investors pull out of this country because of lawlessness. Our dollar has remained strong but we have alot at risk.
You may be surprise to know who these thugs are. Why can't they be caught? Why can't they be stopped? If our local police and defense force officers are unable to bring these criminals to justice maybe because it is a family member, brother of girlfriend or auntie cousin friend, then we as a nation should consider importing officers from other countries to assist in the control and eradication of the criminal element. These persons are not moved by family relation or political pressure but will be here only to carry out a job to the best of their ability. We have to look at all possible solutions.
Many of our young men and women are unable to qualify for positions within the police and defense forces because they are high school drop outs, or high school graduated who cannot read and write and of course do not have the skills or discipline needed for these positions. Whatever the route to a solution government needs to ensure that is a speedily one. You only need one meeting to make and impression and 18 tourist got an impression of a lifetime. 18 persons add up to lots of emails.
People of the Bahamas elections are fast approaching do your best to get this government out including all these 2nd and 3rd generation politicians who follow in their parents footsteps with the same old antiquated way of thinking.......business as usual. New, fresh, energetic, transparent, God fearing and people oriented persons in government is what we are calling for.

Title: PLP & FNM S-U-C-K

I'm taking bet's that the Government of the day will do absolutley nothing. The Minister of No Security & commissioner of police will make a few stupid comments followed by the Prime Minister who will make lot's of ado's about the matter, then all these junkanoo's will settle into the abyss and go back to sleep. The PLP will have a great photo op for Christie to condem the FNM and big mouth Brad will tell us how when they were in power tourist were safe. Both these parties are useless! Neither of them have the political will to make whatever changes are needed to our outdated laws to deal with crime in TODAYS WORLD. These two junkanoo groups make a hell of a lot of noise and pretend to govern but at the end of the day the pirates that have been allowed to retake The Bahamas will remain free. The truth is, the Government can change the draconian laws which protect these pirates with the simple gesture of a pen overnight. Why are the LAWYERS in PARLIMENT that protect the PIRATES so hell bent on allowing them to continue to plunder, rape and murder our citizens and now tourist. Where are the respected phycologist who seem to have answers for everything else in the Bahamas but never a truthful explantion as to why BOTH GOVERNMENTS S-U-C-K and refuse to act on this crime situation. The bet is on...Tommy, Hubert, Perry & Brad will now blow hot air up our butts for the next few days and nothing will be done AGAIN!! THEY HAVE TO GO!! There is no other solution.

IT IS BAD ENUGH THAT WE HAVE THESE CRIMINALS ROBBING, RAPING & KILLING OTHER BAHAMIANS. IF YOU DO THE CRIME, YOU SHOULD SPEND THE TIME.
THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS NEED TO CHANGE QUICK, FAST & HURRY. THESE CULPRITS NEED TO BE DEALT WITH BY ANY MEANS OR WAY TO RID THIS COUNTRY OF THESE TYPES OF VOMITS WHO ARE RUINING OUR COUNTRY & ECONOMY. A PLAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE SOMEWHERE ON THE BOOKS FOR THIS TYPE OF DISASTER.

Title: We need more than just Prayers!

I believe in God just like any other person but prayer alone will not solve this problem! We need action and not 2moro NOW! The power of the Govt. authorities needs to be utilized. If it requires the Defence Force patrolling our streets along with the Police Force do it! If you need to establish a special court to prosecute these thugs 'swiftly' do it! if we need to amend our penal code for certain offenses do it! Obviously, we did not do anything when it was only us getting hurt so now that some 'tourist' get involved maybe we will do something! Remember our economy is now in jeopardy! Will we do something or wait until the U.S. puts our country on the travel advisory list? Wake up, my people, wake up!!
P.S. Curfews will not solve this problem because these crimes are being committed in broad daylight. These criminals are now so brazen they don't need the cover of night fall to attack then rob. rape & even kill innocent people!

Title: Protect the Tourists

Minister of National Security, Government of The Bahamas, why don't you get it? Our Bahamas is at war with armed thugs and, in a state of war, drastic measures have to be taken. Firstly, bail MUST be refused for ALL armed offences. No ifs or buts. Secondly, the Nation's reputation as a safe tourist destination MUST be protected at ALL costs. This means that the RBPF must allocate beat officers to EVERY tourist spot across the Bahamas. Why were the BASH tourists not given the benefit of an accompanying Police Officer? How much would that have cost versus the unknown cost of of this latest atrocity? Have those in power not learned anything from the recent robbery at the Queen's Staircase? Wake up, wake up, all of you who have the power to effect change.....before it is too late.

Title: Calling BATMAN

I think we need BATMAN or at least a BATMAN like approach. Identify thugs and, like good ole GW Bush, pre-emptively strike. They want to bring the war to our way of life, our jobs, our homes, our security, our tourism... then lets declare war on the ghetto. Why can't the police identify and stop these fools? You seem them everyday, every where. The thug on the motorcycle in the middle of the day, popping a wheely through traffic. The heavily tinted car with 5 guys sitting in there, smoke pouring out, rims flashing, a Cadillac nonetheless - how did they afford that? Come on police! Get creative or we will really need BATMAN. These guys are obvious and all over the place - make life miserable for them before they destroy this country. We have to get a grip on this now, before the situation deteriorates even further. Bail laws must be changed. Petty offences like marijuana possession, need to be put on the back burner. Why lock up 20 or 30 people for minor drug possession and stick them in FOX HILL, but let the REAL criminals walk free. Easy to pick up on wayward minors, much harder to get REAL THUGS! Focus on the THUGS! FOCUS!

Title: Minister Of NO Security

The Minister Of NO Security stated at the FNM convention that "CRIME IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE"..I wonder how come he now finds himself in the spotlight along with the commissioner of police. The Minister must think he is only dealing with the ignorant grass roots Bahamians that were all cheering him on at the convention. Such a profound statement is unimaginable to me!! Perhaps the Minister will explain to the U.S. Embassy whom they should expect a solution to crime to come from. He has proven to Bahamians by his lack of action that he obviously believes he is not the one that should be working to immediately change the Constitution regarding crime, bail and murder. If he continues to leave his head up his buttocks, then he or the Prime Minister are obligated to tell us who we are to lobby to effect the needed changes. This non-sense of ignoring crime and protecting criminals at all cost MUST STOP NOW...Bahamians need to SERIOUSLY consider a 3rd political party as the FNM & PLP have proven beyond any doubt that they are simply not capable of properly manageing the affairs of The Bahamas.

Title: WE ARE FINISHED

Whe can kiss the future goodbye for our children. There is no one in authority who is pasionate about solving crime. There is nopropaganda campaigns running to convince people to refuse a life of crime. The government is just fighting crime and has no ideas of how to prevent crime...there are no social programs...no charges brought against men who impregnate underage girls...etc. I only expect it to get worse. Maybe soon the thugs might resort to piracy and hijack one of our cruise ships next. We have no answers for crime. The court system is weak and lousy and the list problems is longer than santa's list. Nothing more can be surprising at this point. It is free for all in this wild west on ancient laws. We should adopt the policies of the EAST and severe the hands of thieves, castrate rapists, and stone murderers to death, instead we are tiptoeing through the tulips. I am ashamed of my leaders and not proud at all to be a Bahamian.

Title: Embarrassed....

I'm a Bahamian Chef living in the US, in-fact I live as north as anyone could possibly live. On a recent call to Nassau, my mother told me about the incident. My embarrassment was fueled later that day when I had lunch with a few friends, and they brought up the subject. What can I say to this, not only as a Bahamian? Tourism is such a vital industry to our country and we prided ourselves on not being like Jamaica or other Caribbean islands that had their tourists assaulted. Where do we go from here? It pains me that my country is falling into the same pitfalls as Jamaica or other Caribbean islands. I've worked for Disney Cruise Line and the one thing that I can say with certainty is that Disney's main concern is that of their guests, and they will figure out a way to regulate their visits onto the island, which will affect the dock taxi drivers and other businesses. They may even limit the amount of time they spend in Nassau and beef up their stay at Castaway Cay. Tommy Turnquest needs to figure out a way to protect the island. Being called the National Security Minister don't mean jack if you don't know what the hell you are doing. Question: When the hell did he have training as a police officer or any type of military training to be in such a position?

Title: Tourism Shortfalls

This is not surprising. What did the Minister think would happen when they continue to allow hundreds of repeat offenders of serious crime out on bail? It was only a matter of time before these criminals turned their attention to tourist which are soft easy targets. The situation can only get worse, as when the idiots that committed this crime are caught and again let out on bail to rob or maybe kill some innocent unfortunate person(s). I just commented last week how absolutley shocked I am of the lack of police presence on the Cable Beach strip while tourist can be seen walking all over the place at night. I wouldn't walk around there at night! Two police ATV motorcycles can sometimes be be seen parked in front of the station door. These lazy police should be walking the beat or at least put their Heinekens down long enough to patrol the strip. The Bahamas is headed down the same road Jamaica traveled. As this Country slips into chaos the two political junkanoo groups (FNM & PLP) sit around fighting each other, ignoring the need to change the Constitution regarding bail and hanging laws, telling us not to panic. Sounds exactly how Jamaica went to hell while their two parties also full of lawyers stood and fought each other over ackee and codfish. It's high time the Minister and police cheif PANICKED along with rest of us!!!

Title: CROOKS "FIND THEM"

It is sad I hope when ever the Police find the persons who did this the folks are willing to return to Nassau and attend court. I hope the bahamiam public know not only did the tourist get rob but also every tax paying Bahamian because, when the trial starts the Government has to pay for all of those folks to return to Nassau to attend court.( AIRLINE TICKET HOTEL MEALS &TRANSPORTATION) HOW MUCH WILL THAT COST US? Thats why we need to get with it folks LET THE POLICE KNOW WHO THESE CROOKS ARE I'M SURE SOMEONE OUT THERE KNOW WHO THEY ARE ( GIRLFRIEND,MOTHER,BROTHER,FELLAS ON THE BLOCKS) BAHAMIAN LIKE TO TALKS TELL THE POLICE SO THEY COULD GET THEY BACKSIDE LOCK UP.

Title: Hang em High

I felt sick when I saw this headline. The punks who did this might as well have raped and murdered us all. When the police catch up with them, they need to be locked away forever, hanged, or just placed in Rawson Square for a day so we can all stone them. When is this madness going to stop. Police can't be expected to know these things are going to happen before they do, so calling on them to prevent crime isn't the answer. What can WE as Bahamians do to take our country back out of the hands of silly thugs who just don't get it?
