Title: Every Bit Helps

I think we need road TRAFFIC SIGNS and road safety literature also to be written in CREOLE so that everyone is aware of the seriousness of the Traffic Regulations.

Title: Enforce 'em!

All the laws in the world are worthless if there is no enforcement. I shudder every time I see "loving" parents driving with a baby or young child unsecured in the front seat.

I am so sick and tired of people putting the blame and looking to the government for every single thing. First education, then crime now road safety. Lets be real we are responsible we drive us not the PM or the Opposition leader we do. If we dont value our own lives who will. Lets wake up and take some inititive maybe then this country can truely move forward.

Title: Yes impose the law

Of course GHM should have already done so when she was Minister.
I agree that we need to protect our children...and keep health care cost down. There is always an expense for treating injuries from accidents, which the goverment pays in many cases. It does not matter whether if for stupid, careless reasons people deserve their injuries.

Title: We Need The Law

In my view the law is a necessary set of standards and guidelines established to remind people to behave civilized and cordial. Most laws are implemented to protect people and in this case I strongly believe that it would serve the same purpose. It is unfortunate that in little Nassau, we don’t seem to have the man power to enforce the Laws for them to be effective, but they are still needed. I recently attended a defensive driving course, and saw how so many “Young Bahamians” meet an untimely death simply because they were not wearing their seat belts. Buckle up Guys, It saves lives!
If buckling up becomes a law, personally for me, it will become a necessary action every time I enter into a vehicle. Actions will eventually becomes habits, and this Good habit could one day save my life.

Title: How Common Is Common Sense

LOL "Average true Bahamian's" comment is hilarious lol it's not how you were raised though, I believe that no matter how much you beat into that child's head to do something if they don't listen and do what you tell them it's not your fault. It's the child's the parent's job is to raise the child to the best of their ability, whether or not the child heed's their parent's words and understands it then there's nothing that parent can do.
Wearing seatbelts is common sense. Period. I'm sure half (or even more) of the Bahamian population travelled to the US and they (without question) wear their seat belts dont' they? So if you can do it there, what's wrong with doing it home?
Common sense.....guess it's not really common.

Title: Seatbelts

GMH did not have time to enforce the laws when her goverment was in power because she spent the whole term telling us 'what we met there' We have a seat belt law in place but the problem is the amount of the fine. I say lower the fine to $55.00 and send the cops out to ticket everybody not wearing a seat belt. I funds in the treasury would go up a 1000 fold and eliminate the national debt within two years.

Title: World's worst drivers

G H-M was the MINISTER for Roads etc etc...and she did NOTHING to help the Nassau situation. Coming from her backgound, a nation of transportation excellence on one hand, did nothing to eleviate the horrendous Jitney foolishness , Why do we not have a proper BUS system...Like Bermuda ??
The Gov't needs money..WHY dodn't the police go out at night, sorry at sunset and dawn, to pull drivers over for NOT having their lights on. OK so they say they can see...but I cannot see them when light is bad at sunset and sunrise. Light up and be seen...It does not cost you any money to pull or trun the switch on. Once the car has started it runs off the alternator, Cars do not have dynamo's anymore!!!
Also most cars need to have their lights adjusted and fixed. Too many 'one-eyed' demons out there with one light on only. and most times it's the near side light...so how much room should I give this motorcyclist ???? Aslo PLEASE DIP your lights when folowing someone or coming towards traffic...it's only common courtesy to do so, but many do not !!!!
Last item...WHY do YOU not stop at a stop sign, pull right out in front of me and then go at naught miles per hour when you were in so much of a hurry ????

Title: common sense and education

Um...laws will not solve the problem. Once again it comes down to common sense and education, possibly being one of the main reasons as to why we have so many problems in this country. I am appalled at the response from the public on this poll. We always seem to take the easy way out and want the government to do everything.
But in the event stringent laws are created they need to enforced by the police or else you might as well throw them out of the window. Why do you think we all buckle up in the States?? Because when we do get pulled over we are fined and HAVE to pay that fine or were screwed and end losing our licenses etc.
Half the people should not be driving, along with half the cars on the road.

Title: SAYS WHO ???? COMMON SENSE SHOULD PREVAIL

HuH, the MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ARE BY LAW (with legal fines if guilty) REQUIRED TO DO THEIR ANNUAL FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE TO THE PUBLIC BY LAW. AND IT IS NOT LIKE ANYONE IS ACCUSED OF DOING SOMETHING IMPROPER BUT THE LAW IS THE LAW FOR GOOD REASONS (not done since 2004 ?) AND ONLY THE PRIME MINISTER HAS APOLOGIZED FOR BEING TARDY...WHILE A FEW MAY HAVE or partially..so how is it expected that rest are somehow reliable enough to LEGALLY legislate laws for others when they can't EVEN FOLLOW their own LAWS ? ...and we can go on talking about the laws, the 95,000 pending backlog of legal cases...bail,...and....

Title: More Road and Traffic Laws Needed and Enforced

The driving habits of "most" people in Nassau is appalling. I become enraged at the ignorance and the condition of most vehicles that would be considered bull dozer bait in most countries. Yapping on cell phones, texting, brake or signal lights not working, cutting drivers off, tailgating - I've seen it all. To encourage Bahamians to wear seat belts and to use child protective car seats would be like talking to a badly built brick wall. It will take legislation to get these dumbass drivers to "get with it". Most of them drive like morons because they are morons.

Title: Are we that stupid

That the govt. has to enforce everything relating to safety??????

Posted By: The Enforcer On: 3/15/2010

Title: Blame Game

THE Government IS responsible for causing the laws of the country to be enforced and therefore should enforce the laws "on the books". However, why didn't Mrs. Hanna-Martin take a stand when her government was in power and she had more influence in causing it to happen? She was the Minister!! Why wait until so many more persons have died? We tolerate mediocrity so long it has become the norm!

Title: save the children

I saw screw seatbelt laws for adults. We should all know better. We've all seen an horrific accident or know someone killed in a crash. I think the pressure should be put on government to make it a CRIMINAL offense to NOT have children buckled up and in proper car seats. It enrages me to see adults driving around with babies in the arms of a front seat passenger or toddler standing up in the front or even back seat. Those parents, guardians, whoever, should be locked up for endangering the lives of those children

Title: it's a shared resposibility but the government need to drive it

the flimsy messages of 'buckle up' just isn't working. bahamas should borrow the hard hitting government public service commercials used in the UK or get bahamas film makers involved, the commercials show the aftermath of losing a husband, baby, teenager, mother because, they were not wearing a seatbelt, not using a baby chair, drink driving or the teenager does'nt know how to look left and right before crossing the road.

Today's Poll

Question: A group of experienced politicians and newcomers to frontline politics are said to be in talks to form a new political party. Would you consider voting for a party other than the FNM or PLP in the next general election? Feel free to comment after you've voted below
  • Yes - Bahamians have given the FNM and PLP chances and it's time we give someone else a chance to see what they can do for the country
  • No - Bahamians will never vote anything other than the FNM or PLP into power
  • Maybe - It depends on who is a part of this new organisation and what they offer that's different from the FNM and PLP
