Title: Foreign Police Officers Recruitment

I don't think that this is a good idea. Too many foreigners are employed in The Bahamas. This is part of the problem. Our culture has clearly deteriorated. As a people, if we continue to look for outsiders to run our country, I think it would be a good idea to import a foreign Prime Minister and Cabinet. Obiously, we do not believe enough in ourselves why we continuously look to the outsiders to do what we are capable off. We just do not need political interference and empower the Police Force to its job. If we claim that we have the best Police Force in the region, I'm not sure exactly what are we asking for. Are we willing to bring in less qualified Police Officers to clean up the crime situation? Part of the problem is we as a people never want to take responsibility for ourselves. The solution is not in bringing in foreigners to do our job but that we should do it ourselves. We say that we are independent in one breath, yet, in another, we are saying indirectly that we are dependent on others to run our country.

Title: Family Values Needed

Crime is more of a problem caused by the breakdown of families and less a police matter. More and more children are being brought up without being taught godliness and manners. They have no conscience. Too many young men are toting an explosive level of anger at their absent, wotless neglectful faters, and they are taking this out on everybody else. It's going to get worse.

bringing in foreigners will not lower the crime rate. the underlying problem in the bahamas is that no one wants to take accountability for their actions. we are always trying to blame someone else for our actions. we blame parents, schools, politians and the police. when we bring in these foreigners and the crime rate doesnt decrease, then an article will publish about them saying that they were never qualified or properly qualified as police officiers.

Title: RBPF

I think the police are doing a good job but they need help and our judicial system is out of order making it more difficult for the police to be effective. With murderers on bail what could the police do.

Title: its overdue

Isn’t it amazing how they would bring in foreign consultants for everything else but the police force……….I wonder why.
We need a core of experienced foreign officers that bring expertise in solving murder cases and serious crimes. It is long overdue. Every year we count the number of deaths and forget the number of murdered victims years before. On the other hand, if they were hired, the foreign officers will be prevented from doing their job because of interference. We have a break down in the country because leadership is too lax and corruptions and who you know is prevalent. The bottom line is that leadership is weak and self serving. Another problem is Lady Justice. She is NOT blind. She is peeping over the blind folds senile and drunk with sleep.

Title: Re:CRIME

I am a Bahamian that live in Bermuda, I recently visited Nassau, and in the short time I was there 3 murders took place. I am preparing with my husband to move back to Nassau, it is so... disappointing . As we are not sure if we want to. I first of all think the problem starts in the homes, if the criminals see that they are creating fear in the people then they will not stop doing crime.
1.What I think would is needed is a crime task force.
2. Police continuous presents in the street.
3.Increase road blocks, sea border patrol, and also a helicopter patrol.
4.Increase security at schools, major events.
5.Curfew on Weekends for teenagers
I think the New Commissioner of Police along with the Defense Force need to join forces and come up with a strategy, bringing foreign officers does not make it safer, as who would absorb the pay?
Think about it .

Title: Foreign Police

Officer by officer, rank by rank it is the only way we will regain our society and restore law and order.
Bahamians created this lawlessness, Bahamians cannot fix it.
A sad fact, but true non the less.
If only we could do the same with politicians......

Title: Training is good but education is better

Sure, why not? it couldn't hurt. The only way to teach a dog new tricks is to LEAD them. I've been traveling to the Bahamas for over 15 years and I have to admit that over time the rise of crime has become more and more apparent, along with the decrease in literacy and pride in education. Someone below mentioned it starts at home, which I agree with. I am in favor of a little training from foreign police, be it UK or USA or even CANADA but what happens after they are gone? It all goes to hell in a hand basket once there is no accountability. I am MORE in favor in spending this money in education and activities to keep the youth OFF the streets where most of the crime happens. That's just my two cents anyway...

Title: Crime

Amen. Instill a curfew for a month and prepare a radical plan to root out the criminals, its not hard to do, if the Police were doing their jobs decades ago! Sad but true, we need a SWAT team to immediately move in on these criminals. Rid the force of corrupt policement, customs officers, RBDF officers, they know who they are!!!! Then go and clean out those Government officies, of slack, lazy people, who do nothing all day, but just collect a paycheck.

Title: enough is enough

While it would be nice to think that we as Bahamians are able to contain and maintain crime in our own country, the sad fact is we cannot. Nor will we ever be able to. Why? Because for every criminal there is a brother, father, cousin, friend, neighbour in an elevated position - be they in the police force, government, religious sector or public arena that will find some way for that one - just that one - friend/relative/whomever to receive a lesser punishment - if any at all - because, really, that one person may have comitted a crime, but they didn't mean to cause any harm, or they're a nice person. Either that, or they've been paid off. This island is too small, and people are too closely related and connected. Without an outside force, nothing will ever change.

Title: crimes

i say the goverment needs to start hanging in this country foreign officers is not going to help every country has its own problems and they have to find away to deal with it .we as a country depends on foreigners to much that is why we cannot stand on our own two feet now in this bahama land

Title: foreign police

So we are to bring in foreigners to teach us how to behave!!!Why don't we bring in foreign rehabilitators to work along with persons who have already committed crimes so that they do not become repeat offenders. Crime does not start in the court rooms nor does it start in the streets. Discipline is desperately needed in our home and in our classrooms. Dr. Myles Munroe once said that a child has to be taught discipline by the age of five (5) because after that it will be more difficult to discipline the child thereafter. .We must end this senseless attack on faulty systems and sweep around our own front doors. Prevention is still better than cure.

Title: agreeing with Constable UK

I completely agree with all comments made and especially the one made by Constable UK. Yes there is corruption rampant, as evidenced by the boat thefts in Abaco. Yes the courts are a shambles. And Yes political corruption and influence is still present in this country. But if there were proper equipment (read: computerisation) and proper protocols and processes there would be less corruption as it would be harder to get away with things. The courts definitely need better resources if we are to see any change in this country.

i am a police constable from the UK who understand your concerns in reference to the increase in crime. Travelling to the Bahamas regally I am impressed with the friendly atmosphere of your people and the ethos of your country.
My overall thoughts on bringing in overseas officers is that it will not sort out the problems the islands have at the moment. the Royal Bahamas police need to be invested in more. I have spoken to officers from your country whilst on holiday and i was shocked on how poorly they are paid and equipped, At the moment a awful lot of police officers from the uk are emigrating to Australia , Canada and Bermuda to take up posts there it is evident that the British bobbie is revered still around the world maybe the bahamas could to tap into that resource? but in todays times with out the tools, any person would find it hard to fight the battle that's required.

Title: Yes...but no

Would a foreign police force help our situation...on one hand, yes, it could...on the other hand, I am not too sure. Is the policing problem truly a POLICE problem or is it a greater problem of the legal/court system, and our laws that tend to drag things on...and on...and on, for so long that the police essentially give up trying to enforce anything, because by the time the ticket, or offense or penalty is sorted out, it is years or decades down the road? For a simple traffic fine for speeding to take 2, 3, 4 years to get sorted, how much effort am I (playing the temp role of a police officer here) going to put into enforcing the law, only to get tangled up in slow courts and even slower talking lawyers. There is a BIGGER problem here that is hindering the police force, that no FOREIGN police force will really be able to make a BIG difference in.
Now, in saying that, at my place of work, we had a break in about a month ago, CID has yet to turn up to survey the situation and take the very valuable footage (guys with Tatoos on video, for review...not even a phone call.
So who knows, something has to be done, but where do we start...corrupt inefficient police, or even slower and maybe just as corrupt courts sytems?

Title: Must find a solution

It appears that our Governor General will call on the Queen of England to request police assistance in one of her "colonies". Crime in the Bahamas is at critical mass...anarchy is next.

everyone doing crime knows at least one officer on the force .that officer will do his best behind the scenes to assist his friend in finding a loop hole to get a slap on the wrist ........even for murder

Title: Change starts with each household.

Agree with all comment so far. Not all of our police are corrupt and the more we harp on the negitive side of the police the worst we make it on the good officiers that want to help. Years ago in the Bahamas police were not only respected but criminals feared them. Forget the label "police brutality". Let the officiers do there job, and get these fools off the streets. Its the fault of parents, teachers, government... its everyone's fault. We took discipline out of the school as if we were apart of the U.S. and parents let there kids do what ever they want, now everyone cryin help. Bring in both Uk and Us police to help. Lastly, a proper I.D. system for all over the age of 15 should be required.

  • No - Bahamians will never vote anything other than the FNM or PLP into power
  • Maybe - It depends on who is a part of this new organisation and what they offer that's different from the FNM and PLP
