Christopher Columbus statue damage

A man was arrested on Saturday afternoon for damaging the Christopher Columbus statue at Government House with a sledge hammer.

According to reports, police were dispatched to the scene at around 1.20pm and arrested him. He was also found to be in possession of a bullet proof vest.

The man was taken into custody for damage to government property and unlawful possession. Investigations into this matter are ongoing.

Video from social media shows the man shouting and causing extensive damage to the statue.

It was Americans who started spreading the propaganda about Chinese being racists. Bahamians know that Chinese will live within a community but they will not mix and mingle. They say to themselves. Even though there are cases of Chinese being married to (Black) Bahamians. Also Black and white peoples being married to Chinese and living in China. The stadium also serves a purpose and is functional. What purpose does the statue of Columbus serve. Especially now that it is suspected that the statue was built with the money of poor, Black slaves who had been duped into paying for it.

How sad to see our country descend to these unlawful activities. We are importing the negative attitude of activists in other nations. We cannot rewrite our history. Bahamians must have a better knowledge of our history and be proud of our long and colourful traditions. Christopher Columbus made a contribution as did others over the centuries. This monument and that of Queen Victoria must be better protected. For someone to be able just to mount the statue and damage it and no police or security are around can no longer be tolerated.

Im not ashamed. Revolution is happening world over and its almost always never pretty. You have people who feel trapped by a system that continues to give more to the rich and take more and more away from the poor. This is a natural progression. Ive said it before, this country needs to find a way to distribute wealth, not as social assistance but as opportunities for advancement to those on the lower rungs. In the interest of peace and national security. Right now the politicians lawyers accountants and contractors suck up all the money unnecessarily. add in illegal gaming its indidious, it feeds off the poor. How many millions do you really need?

People talk about the minimum wage. As bad as it maybe, many earn less than minimum wage because they are hourly workers.

The ones at the top not only pay themselves handsomely but claim personal as business expenses.

So there is a perpetual turnover not only because of the low wages, but because places are run as a plantation, even government agencies.

I recall an old song about the man who could not live in the houses that he build and his shanty home was demolished.

As I said, "revolution is never pretty". History leaves a trail of people killed, businesses and properties burned to the ground. Noone is angry at the broken statue, the burned buildings, the destroyed cars or the incidental people. Theyre just in the way of the rolling tide.

This happens over and over and over again. Its happening right now in Haiti.

Impossible here? I bet noone imagined the Columbus statue in Downtown Nassau would have one (non natural disaster) leg removed.

Spanish philosopher George Santayana is credited with the aphorism, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” Like it or not, Columbus was a part of the history of these islands. If history was still taught in proper perspective, perhaps we would understand the significance of the statue, insofar as it reminds us of " from whence we came" for good or bad. It is not so much about the man, who was a product of his era. Ignorance is bliss. The darker aspects of history should serve to remind us to do better.

History and life is not black or white, many more grays and all shades in between. So it is with Columbus. Not all good and not all bad. He was a product of his times as we all are so looking back with our 21st century mores is skewed at best. The real people who should be angry with Columbus are any descendants of indigenous arawaks who lived here. This statue was a gift from a abolitionist colonial governor who fought tooth and nail with the local White House of assembly and white slave owners for better treatment of slaves even to the point of incarcerating some of them. Have an open mind and educate yourself Bahamas about the nuances of our history.

My money is on Davis claiming the perpetrator here was a disgruntled supporter of Minnis and the FNM party made mad in the head by the FNM party's recent disgraceful defeat by the PLP party, yet again. Whether Blacks sold Blacks into slavery or not doesn’t legitimize the deep, dark centuries of the cruel and deadly trade of slavery. Neither does it make no less grave the millions and millions of lives that were lost after those slave ships left the western coast of Africa. If there was no slavery, then there would be no need for your claim that ‘Blacks captured and sold other Blacks into slavery.’ And history clearly records that many Africans were tricked, duped and hoodwinked into gettin on those ships, some even being told they were going to meet their gods. In fact one of the early slave ships bore the name ‘Jesus.’ And least you forgot or was never taught, Colombus’ first crew was made up of prisoners who agreed to make the voyage in exchange for their freedom. History books also record that there was an outbreak of General disease, more specifically syphilys, among the native population shortly after the arrival of Colombus. This was a European disease and apparently when Colombus left, he also left the natives untreated and also not knowing what they were suffering from. And least we forget ‘The Tuskegee Experiment.’

So what is the history of white folk in The Bahamas. There were the so called Eleutherian Adventurers who can to the island in search of religious freedom. Did that colony survive or did it die out at some point? Then there were those white folk Black Beard den, who came to the islands to cause ships to wreck then steal their gold and cargo after making the crew ‘walk the plank.’ Then there were those who fled the civil war in the US and settled in the Abacos and Northern Bahamas. And, of course, the set who came during the four to five centuries of slavery. Some had plantations and had slaves to grow crops, including cotton, which still appears from time to time in Adlaide and other parts of the island. Others were directly involved in the slave trade where they met ships coming from Sftica, off loaded its cargo of negro slaves and would then feed and fatten the negroes them for sale into slavery in the US, Canada, south and Central America, Cuba and other parts of the region. There was also the rum runners and drug smuggling was actually going on during slavery. All happened after Colombus came.

How can you refer to Africa as one region when it is compromised of many nations, thousands of tribes, hundreds of languages and a plethora of cultures? And anything that proved that Africa was more advanced technically than most parts of the world? But go back even a bit further to biblical times and tell your audience where a large population of the African population came from.

I myself have never heard or read this account until today. If it is TRUE, I say let CHRIS remain where he is and let the story be told IN A PLAK VISIBLE FOR ALL TO SEE.

Many Bahamians question why the Christopher Columbus statue exists and what is the importance behind it being at Government house, and rightly so considering Columbus didn’t discover The Bahamas and also made no positive contribution to what this country is today.

The history of the statue is tied with Sir James Carmichael Smyth, slaves in The Bahamas and another statue the Queen Victoria in parliament square.

Sir James Carmichael Smyth was appointed Governor of The Bahamas in 1829. Smyth was a known sympathizer with the cause of slaves and a keen abolitionist, because of this he found himself to be the enemy of many influential whites.

Smyth also worked to abolish corporal punishment for female slaves, Smyth tried without success to persuade the House of the Assembly to legislate against it.

in 1830 Smyth became aware of cruelty towards female slaves among a group of 77 runaways from the Lord Rolle estate in Exuma.The slaves, who had stolen a boat and fled to Nassau, were seized in Nassau Harbour and tried as runaways. ‬

‪The magistrates who signed the warrant for the punishment of the female slaves were suspended by Smyth. Smyth's actions caused an uproar

Smyth was described as a pre emancipation hero for attacking the atrocities of slavery and providing leniency for runaway slaves. He also dismissed the police magistrate and severalmunicipal judges for defiance of these orders.

Carmichael Smyth frequently worshipped with the black congregation on Sundays, the ruins of this church are located at the junction of Carmichael and Gladstone road and are incorporated into the structure of St. Ambrose Anglican Church.

To show gratitude the black people collected a great amount of funds which they gave to Carmichael Smyth to have a monument made. It is my assumption that the black Bahamians assumed that he would have a monument sculpted of himself but instead he had a statue of Christopher Columbus sculpted.

The statue was originally meant to be in parliament square but the rich whites were disgusted with the thought of a statue paid for by black people would be at the House of Parliament entrance. So instead the wealthy whites erected a statue of Queen Victoria where it still remains.

As a result Sir James Carmichael Smyth moved his gift to pecks slope near Government house

So this account is saying that it was the money of Black, Bahamian slaves that bought and paid for the statue of Chris. So then it gives Bahamians more right to decide what to do with it. Destroying it may not be the best option but first to confirm this account of the circumstances surrounding the creating of the statue and the placement of it on Peaks Slope. Then a plaque at least six feet tall and three feet wide bearing this account should be erected next to the statue. The fact that Black Bahamians were duped into paying for the statue of someone they did not admire is history invaluable.
