Homosexuality and the Bahamas

"Indeed, if you want to know whether today people believe in democracy, if you want to know whether they are true democrats, if you want to know whether they are human rights activists, the question to ask is, 'What about gay people?' Because that is now the litmus paper by which this democracy is to be judged,"

Bayard Rustin in 1986, according to Time on Two Crosses -- The Collected Writings of Bayard Rustin.

BAYARD Rustin, a little known American civil rights advocate and trusted adviser to Martin Luther King Jr, once said that the way homosexuals are treated would be the next litmus test -- after struggles for racial equality -- for democratic societies.

Dubbed the "unknown hero" behind the landmark civil rights movement in the United States, Rustin taught Martin Luther King Jr his platform of non-violent resistance and is credited for organising the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest peaceful protests ever held in the US.

Despite his contribution to black history, he never gained the recognition of his counterparts because, some speculate, of his sexual orientation. He was threatened, arrested, jailed, and sacked from influential positions -- all because he was an openly gay man in an intensely homophobic era.

I must admit that I had not heard about Rustin and his life-long fight for black and gay equality until last week, during an interview with local human and gay rights activist Erin Greene about homophobia in our society. But to me, his argument rings true. I believe that if one were to apply Rustin's litmus test to the Bahamas today, our nation would fail, and fail miserably.

Homosexuality is one of the biggest sore points in Bahamian society. Homophobia once drove hundreds to converge in a public square to protest a gay cruise. In 2004 that mob screamed at tourists disembarking their ship that they would not allow them to "take our children."

Many seem to imagine that gays lurk in dark corners or back alleys committing illicit, immoral, non-Christian acts. Gays are our modern day "boogie men" ready to snatch little children away to corrupt and convert to an abhorrent lifestyle. Many can't fathom how a man, or woman, could be attracted to and have an intimate relationship with a person of the same sex, therefore it must be dirty and wicked. The prejudice, oppression and violence towards gays is similar to the bigoted beliefs of racists and segregationists.

As a descendant of persons who were subjected to this type of treatment, I find it a contradiction to be both black and homophobic.

If you stack the arguments segregationists made to oppose interracial marriage next to the argument against gay marriage, they are shockingly similar. When we question whether the child of a gay couple would grow up confused, it bears an embarrassing similarity to statements made by bigots who conjure up images of the "tragic mulatto" failing to fit in the "white world" or the "black world."

Often times, homophobia is a fear born out of selective use of the Bible to support hate. Today the descendants of slaves quote Leviticus 18:22 to justify denouncing homosexuality just as bigots quoted Genesis 9:25 to justify the subjugation of their fellow man. The correlation between bigoted attitudes towards gays and the filthy racism that kept millions of our brothers and sisters in physical and metaphorical bondage for centuries seems crystal clear to me.

Yet I've often wondered what in our culture has given rise to the seething hatred which is spewed over the talk radio airwaves and from certain church pulpits.

According to anthropologist and scholar Dr Nicolette Bethel, Bahamian attitudes towards gays were not always so pronounced.

"(Homosexuality in the Bahamas) has not always brought about such a passionate response, historically Bahamians have been far more tolerant of different sexualities than other West Indians," Dr Bethel told Insight in a recent interview.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, homosexuality "wasn't talked about, wasn't condemned. People might have laughed, might have ridiculed, but no one was talking about (gay) people going to hell," remembered the scholar.

In fact she recalled instances when nightclub entertainers walked down Bay Street -- Nassau's bustling downtown district -- in full drag, or in women's clothing.

"People were fine with it," she said.

While no thorough research about the origins of homophobia in the Bahamas has been done, Ms Bethel sees the change in tide towards gays and the introduction of fundamentalist Christianity to our society as no coincidence.

"I don't remember the kind of frenzy and interest in people's sex lives (two decades ago) compared to what has happened in the late 1990s and 2000s. The 1980s were watershed in recent history in two ways: it was the drug era and the reaction to the drug era was the interest in fundamentalist Christianity. And fundamentalists around the world are far more interested in sex than most other Christian manifestations, so I don't think that they are unrelated."

Erin Greene shares a similar view.

"There is this theory that -- homosexuality always existed in the Bahamas, like everywhere else -- homophobia began when the Baptist missionaries came into the Bahamas. Homophobia in these colonial communities is complex but the starting point could be when American southern Baptist churches starting coming in, you started seeing the homophobia. (Before) we knew who the gay people were, they were visible, but then they started to become invisible and people are afraid of what they don't know," surmised Ms Greene, part of the Bahamas' Rainbow Alliance, a group of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and heterosexual individuals.

As a child who spent many a Sunday in the pew of a Baptist church, I know all too well the rhetoric of fire and brimstone. Try as they might, those impassioned preachers never got through to me, mainly because I could not reconcile how a Saviour whose New Testament message revolved around love, non-judgement and forgiveness could condemn two consenting, loving adults for expressing inherent behaviour.

But there are many who drink in a preacher's fiery onslaught against gays like a thirsty wanderer in the desert, with no thought of questioning what they are taught.

The practice of scripture being used to condemn homosexuality was put to one local pastor who sees it as selectively taking certain inflammatory passages from the Bible literally, while ignoring the text's condemnation of other practices prevalent in today's culture.

"I believe fundamentalism is a way of reading the Bible that is blind to the cultural context on both sides, (not understanding) that the culture in which the scripture was originally written and not also understanding the culture in which it is received. When we take the Bible out of its culture we end up taking all of the Bible on the same plain literally as if it was meant to be taken literally, in all places, at all times," said the pastor who chose to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal.

I am no religious scholar, but I want to take the time to point out several instances where the Bible appears to denounce homosexuality along with other practices that are commonplace today .

Leviticus 18:22 says "Thou (man) shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is (an) abomination."

If you read this passage alone, it seems like an open and shut case on the practice of male homosexuality. However that same Book condemns the eating of pork, "And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you" (Lev 11:7) and even seafood, "These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat." (Lev 11.9).

Leviticus also advises against farmers planting crops of mingled seeds and wearing clothes woven of multiple blends: "Thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee." Lev 19:19.

Should we now start condemning people who enjoy shrimp, conch salad or wear a cotton/wool blend shirt?

And then there are the letters of the Apostle Paul. Paul's writings in Romans is viewed by many Christians as the most transparent portion of the Bible that condemns homosexuality.

In Romans 1:26-27, the apostle writes, "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature.

"And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."

On face value, and with no investigation, this seems to be clear evidence that Paul viewed homosexual practices as wicked. But an opposing school of thought teaches that this interpretation does not take into account the cultural context of Paul's writing. It is said that Paul wrote his letter to the Romans after a tour of the Mediterranean, where he observed pagan rituals which included orgies, homosexual sex and paedophelia. Some believe this is what Paul condemned and not consensual homosexual behaviour between adults, a practice that was most likely unheard of in his day.

"In the actual writings of Paul, often what is interpreted as homosexuality could possibly be referring to a type of homosexual pagan ritual that he was condemning and not the kinds of monogamous, loving homosexual relationships evident today," the local pastor added.

Let's not forget, Apostle Paul also spoke out against women having a place in the church, and he had no issue with slavery.

"I find a huge rational hole in that argument given that if you're going to interpret Paul's condemnation of homosexuality literally why would you not take his comments on slavery literally or his commands about women (not) speaking in church?" asked the pastor.

So that this entire piece is not a religious argument, let's go back to an earlier comment by Dr Bethel, who said our treatment of homosexuals is traditionally more tolerant than that of others in the region.

Indeed, by comparison to violence against gays in Jamaica, the Bahamas seems somewhat tame. In a 2006 Time article, Jamaica was referred to as "the most homophobic place on earth" due to its disturbing accounts of mob attacks and violence against gays.

According to that article, two of the island's most prominent gay activists, Brian Williamson and Steve Harvey, were murdered several years ago. It is reported that a crowd celebrated over Williamson's mutilated body. In 2004, a teen nearly died after his father learned his son was gay and invited a group to lynch the boy at his school, Time reported.

In 2006, Nokia Cowan of Kingston, drowned after a crowd shouting "batty boy" -- Jamaican slang for homosexual -- chased him off a pier, Time said.

Although instances like those are not commonplace in the Bahamas, Ms Greene thinks the damage done here is equally pronounced.

"What Jamaica experiences in physical violence, we experience in psychological and spiritual violence. In Jamaica they don't talk about it at all, here we ridicule -- with the jokes on the radio -- and separate," said Ms Greene.

But there have been some reported local attacks on gays. In 2008, a 28-year-old man was the reported victim of a gay bashing incident and was taken to hospital after he was assaulted at a downtown restaurant. That same year, another young homosexual man was reportedly attacked coming out of a popular gay nightclub on Elizabeth Avenue in Nassau.

And early last year, Frederick Green-Neely was acquitted after he confessed to killing a reportedly gay man. Jurors in the Supreme Court found that Green-Neely used justifiable force when he stabbed Dale Williams three times, after the man -- who he said was known to be gay and HIV positive -- told him he had a crush on him and grabbed his crotch.

Green-Neely's lawyer told the court he was "defending his manhood."

I was inspired to write this article several weeks ago when I first heard that another gay cruise had plans to sail to the Bahamas this April. I immediately bristled. Not because I was offended by the thought of scores of pride-filled gay men and women descending on our country to frolic on our sand and surf, but because I braced myself for the expected onslaught from the religious community and the general public.

Would the news elicit the same deafening cry of protest from critics of a homosexual lifestyle akin to the heated demonstrations gay cruise passengers met in 2004 and 1998? Aside from some bigoted comments on The Tribune's website in response to a poll on the cruise a few weeks ago, the reaction so far has been relatively mute at best.

As I write this, there is no way of telling if our country and some of its religious leaders have matured past the point of flocking to Prince George Wharf to fight "the gay agenda."

Is the outrage slowly building, bubbling up behind closed doors, set to explode once the fateful cruise docks in two months? Only time will tell.

Rustin died in 1987 before he could see the gay rights and equality movement gain the traction and respect of the civil rights movement. I hope in my lifetime to see our society pass that litmus test.

Title: Offensive?

Pointing out scientific facts is offensive? I am proud to be Bahamian, but I am not proud of my country's hatred and ignorance of science. We are an ignorant country, because we have low levels of education. That is a fact. It isn't an opinion. Don't confuse ignorance with stupidity. They are not the same thing at all.
ignorance ('?gn?r?ns)

— n
lack of knowledge, information, or education; the state of being ignorant
Sadly, in 2010, it is an undeniable fact that we are a woefully ignorant people. I don't say this to bash, but to point out a fact. Denial gets us nowhere. The longer we deny reality, the longer we remain in ignorance and the longer we condemn our people to a future steeped in continued ignorance. Our lack of care for math, languages (including English) and science and our obsession with over religiousity will perpetuate that ignorance until our children have only gospels to eat and, like the Taliban, violence becomes the only 'economy' they understand. Is that what we want? That is always the result of too much religion without genuine spirituality, violence. Look around, it is happening already.

Title: In Response to E.F.

I had your quotes all copied and pasted, however it apparently was not submitted correctly, and I do not care to go through that process again. However, I will say that I understand that you are passionate, but I feel as if it is unneccessary to belittle other persons or call them ignorant simply because they disagree, or because they do not use scholarly references to back their claims. To each is own. Have a nice day.
PS. this was the LAST phrase that I copied, henceforth, I can paste it now.
-------
You rank the Bible ahead of science. Therein lies the heart of your ignorance. If you tell me that you value the Bible for its moral teachings, fine. If you tell me that you value the Bible because you think God literally meant that there was an Adam and there was an Eve and their children are the only ancestors of man... well, I have a story about a jolly old fat guy who lives in the North Pole for you. Please, the depth of your ignorance knows no bounds. You are lost in religious nonsense.

The truth is an offense, but not a sin. Right? What did you find offensive? Why don't we try something. You cite where I was offensive in quotes, but be sure to copy both the sentence before and the sentence after. Then we can debate what you consider offensive. Fair?

Title: Ummm

Umm, these comments are absoulutely.......interesting. I get that some persons are very passionate about what they believe, and their lifestyles, but I'm trying to make it through this life living according to the Bible as best as I can; that is doing unto others what I want them to do to me, and trying not to judge others lest I be judged. It's not right to bombard everyone who shares an opposing view to me, or to force my beliefs upon others. Mr Folly makes some really offensive comments, and if this were a physical confrontation rather than this blog setting, then there would probably be a problem. But quite frankly sirs and madams, your points have been made, so there really is no need for all this back and forward throat-slashing. Jeezze

Title: There Is Nothing New Under The Sun

Ecclesiastes 1:9-14 NIV) " What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. {10} Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time."
I could remember my mother telling me storys of during the time i came about on this earth in 1963...how the white christian churches back then would be preaching on how these was the last days in time..."..look out...Jesus is comming back any minute now for his church"...And why were they saying this?....because the blacks were getting their rights as equal human beings..and it was being made law..to discrimate against any of them.
Even though a lot of whites have come around to really understanding what..Ephesians 6:5 ..was truely saying in 2010 ....we still know of many..around the world.. who just have a complete hatered for blacks...and continuesly useing the Bible verse still to this day .."Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ."...as their license ..to say God has giveing them permission to hate the black race...and theyre sending our country/island...to hell...who ever support giveing these dark colour people equal rights.
The dehumanizing and degradeing words...used back then...towards blacks ..are the same...only on a different set of minoritys....The same use of the Bible to give justification to hate that minority group...is the same in this day in time. And the same cry in the churches...'..these are the last days in time...because some rights are comming about for homosexuals'...are the same of old...( ..there is nothing new under the sun..)
The writer for 'Ecclesiastes'..had great insight and wisdom...realizeing the truth of the events happening during his time...and will be also in thousands of years to come...
On May 5, 2001, Pope Paul II begged God's forgiveness for sins committed by Roman Catholics against Jews, heretics and women, he acknowledged that the "Church" has been wrong in the past. It also took the Catholic Church 359 years to admit that they were wrong when they accused Galileo of heresy, comdemning him to death, unless he recanted that the earth rotates around the sun.
As did then....people have used the Bible to endorse slavery and segregation, initiate wars and crusades, condemn inter-racial marriage, burn women at the stake as witches, support the racism of the Ku Klux Klan, approve of Hitler's holocaust, etc, etc. . . . the list is long.
We look at these atrocities now and wonder, how could people have been so wrong about what the Bible says?.. Are people wrong again about what the Bible says about homosexuality? How could this had happened?..i ask

@Just Natural
I would imagine that more cases are reported, not that there are more cases per se. Statistics are a funny thing. For example, rape reporting has exploded in the western world in the last 20 years. So, does that mean there were more rapes or that more rapers were reported? More likely the latter, more women feel comfortable being honest about their experiences. Whether that is the fact that they were raped or the fact that they kissed a girl it matters little. When you collect statistics you are taught to look for such anomalies. This psychologist is being willfully ignorant by not mentioning that obvious fact that as girls became more comfortable disclosing an honest answer, they did. Previously, they were more comfortable lying. That doesn't mean that in the real world there are more lesbians or bisexuals. It just means we know of them now, whereas before it was all hush hush.

Title: Why are so many girls lesbian or bisexual?

There you have it some evidence showing the obvious that there are more hterosexuals than homosexuals/lesbians, well so far. Admittingly doesnt say much about bisexuals which i think is dishonest. It should be U either straight or your gay.
I know Erasamus has some comments/responses 4 dis well bring it on.

Why are so many girls lesbian or bisexual?
By Leonard Sax, MD, PhD
Created Apr 3 2010 - 7:29pm
You've probably heard about Constance McMillen by now. She's the openly-gay high school senior who wanted to take her girlfriend to the high school prom at Itawamba High School in northern Mississippi. The principal told the girls that all prom couples have to be boy-girl. Ms. McMillen called the ACLU, which threatened the school with legal action. In response, the school board canceled the prom. The ACLU then asked U.S. District Court Judge Glen Davidson to intervene and reinstate the prom. The judge ruled that although the school had violated Ms. McMillen's civil rights, he wouldn't force them to hold a prom.
On Friday, April 2, Ms. McMillen attended an alternative prom at the Fulton County Country Club. According to the Associated Press, her girlfriend's parents wouldn't allow the 16-year-old girlfriend to go, so McMillen escorted another young woman instead. To make the story even worse, it turns out that the alternative prom at the Fulton County Country Club was a fake, with only seven kids attending, according to McMillen. The real prom, i.e. the prom which most of the seniors attended, was held at a still-undisclosed location, and McMillen wasn't invited.
The story continues to attract national attention because it's just so darn quaint. Imagine: there are still people who get upset when they see girls kissing other girls! Who knew?
Psychologist John Buss estimates that for most of human history, perhaps 2% of women have been lesbian or bisexual (see note 1, below). Not any more. Recent surveys of teenage girls and young women find that roughly 15% of young females today self-identify as lesbian or bisexual, compared with about 5% of young males who identify as gay or bisexual (see note 2, below).
As a physician and a psychologist, what I found missing in the noise surrounding the Constance McMillen story was any serious discussion of why a growing number of girls self-identify as lesbian or bisexual. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as Seinfeld might say.
But why are young women today at least three times more likely than their brothers to identify as bisexual or homosexual? "I kissed a girl and I liked it," Katy Perry told us in her #1 hit single. Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, Anna Paquin, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore - they all want us to know that they are bisexual.
There is no comparable crowd of young male celebrities rushing to assure us that they go both ways. Imagine a young man singing "I kissed a boy and I liked it." Would that song reach #1 on the charts? Why not?
Why is it OK for girls to be bisexual or homosexual, but not boys?
Over the past seven years, I've posed this question to hundreds of teenagers and young adults across the United States. The most common answer I get isn't really an answer. "Girls kiss other girls at parties because guys like it," one teenage girl told me. "It makes the guys hoot and holler, so the girls do it again. They're just doing it for attention. It's not for real."
I point out, as gently as I can, that that response doesn't answer my question. Pretending to be lesbian or bisexual doesn't explain why a growing proportion of young women are lesbian or bisexual.
Or does it?
Female sexuality is different from male sexuality. If a straight boy kissed another boy, perhaps to amuse some girls who might be watching, he would be unlikely to undergo a change in sexual orientation as a result. But, as Professor Roy Baumeister at Florida State University and others have shown, sexual attraction in many women seems to be more malleable (see note 3 below). If a teenage girl kisses another teenage girl, for whatever reason, and she finds that she likes it - then things can happen, and things can change. If a young woman finds her soulmate, and her soulmate happens to be female, then she may begin to experience feelings she's never felt before.
Especially if all the guys she knows are losers.
Which brings me to the second point I've encountered in my interviews with young people. Twenty years ago, when I opened my practice in a suburb of Washington DC, it was rare to find 14-year-old boys who were looking at pornography every day. Today it's common, in fact it's becoming the norm. When I meet with a group of 14-year-old boys and I ask them, "how many of you guys subscribe to a porn site?", all hands go up. I don't believe them. But today, no boy wants to admit that he's the weirdo who doesn't look at online porn.
Twenty years ago, hardcore pornography was tucked away in adult bookstores. Today any 14-year-old can access such photos online in seconds. Role models for young men, from pop singer John Mayer to the 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, talk openly about their collections of porn (see note 4, below).
Is there any connection between these two trends - between the rise in the number of young women who self-identify as lesbian or bisexual, and the increasing normalization and acceptance of pornography in the lives of young men? Maybe there is.
A young woman told me how her boyfriend several years ago suggested that she shave her pubic hair, so that she might more closely resemble the porn stars who were this young man's most consistent source of sexual arousal. She now identifies herself as bisexual. "It was just such a welcome change, to snuggle under a blanket on the couch with my girlfriend, watch a movie, and talk about God and death and growing old, to be intimate emotionally and spiritually as well as physically. I don't know a guy who could even comprehend the conversations we have."
I wish Constance McMillen and her girlfriend all the best. But I have to wonder: Are there so many girl-girl couples out there because that's truly who they are - or because the guys are such losers?
Leonard Sax MD PhD is a physician, psychologist, and author of Girls on the Edge: the four factors driving the new crisis for girls, which will be published next month by Basic Books.
Note 1: How common has bisexual and lesbian sexual orientation been among women, historically?: In the third edition of his textbook Evolutionary Psychology: the new science of the mind, Professor David Buss (University of Texas / Austin) asserts that "1 to 2 percent of women" are lesbian or bisexual ("What about lesbian sexual orientation?" Box 4.1, p. 137 in the Pearson International Edition, 2009).
He implies that this figure has been generally valid over time, a finding which he acknowledges poses an as-yet-unsolved mystery for evolutionary psychology. Popular accounts of homosexual behavior often suggest that these behaviors make evolutionary sense because the people practicing these behaviors make better aunts and uncles than heterosexuals do, a theory first advanced by E.O. Wilson back in the 1970's.
However, studies published in the past twenty years have provided little support for this hypothesis, and have often directly refuted it, particularly for male homosexuals: it turns out that gay men are actually more likely to be estranged from nieces and nephews, which contradicts the predictions of Wilson's kin altruism theory: see for example Bobrow & Bailey 2001, also Rahman & Hull 2005.
(Nobody seems to have told the New York Times about this, as they repeated E. O. Wilson's 1970's hypothesis about homosexual men being better uncles, with breathless credulity, and no substantive mention of the studies refuting this theory, in a lengthy March 29 2010 feature in the NYT Magazine.)
It's very difficult to estimate accurately the "true" proportion of lesbian or bisexual women 50 years ago or 200 years ago. In many jurisdictions 50 years ago, lesbian behavior would have been a criminal offense. In that era and in those jurisdictions, asking a woman whether she was a lesbian was equivalent to asking her whether she had committed a crime. Even when assured of confidentiality, women might reasonably under-report the true incidence of bisexual or lesbian orientation.
However, it's hard to deny that lesbian and bisexual behavior has become much more visible in our time compared with one or two generations ago -- and also that lesbian behavior is much more visible today in mainstream North American culture than is homosexual behavior among men.
Note 2: How common is bisexual and homosexual orientation, today? Researchers at Cornell University, examining data collected from a representative sampling of young Americans which included more than 20,000 individuals in 80 communities across the United States, found that 85.1% of the young women identified as heterosexual; 0.5% reported no sexual identity; and the remaining 14.4% were sexual but not strictly heterosexual, i.e. either lesbian or bisexual.
Among young men, 94.0% identified themselves as heterosexual; 0.4% of the men reported no sexual identity; and the remaining 5.6% identified as gay or bisexual.
See Ritch Savin-Williams and Geoffrey L. Ream, "Prevalence and stability of sexual orientation components during adolescence and young adulthood," Archives of Sexual Behavior, volume 36, pp. 385 - 394, 2007.
The proportions in Europe might be higher. For example, in Norway, more than 20% of girls and young women identified as lesbian or bisexual: see L. Wichstrøm and K. Hegna, "Sexual orientation and suicide attempt: A longitudinal study of the general Norwegian adolescent population," Journal of Abnormal Psychology, volume 112, pp. 144-151, 2003. In a study from New Zealand, 16.4% of young women identified as lesbian or bisexual, compared with 5.6% of men who identified as gay or bisexual: see N. Dickson and colleagues, "Same-sex attraction in a birth cohort: prevalence and persistence in early adulthood", Social Science and Medicine, volume 56, pp. 1607 - 1615, 2003.
Note 3: Maybe a straight woman is just a woman who hasn't yet met - the right woman? Professor Roy Baumeister's most relevant article about erotic plasticity is "Gender differences in erotic plasticity: the female sex drive as socially flexible and responsive," Psychological Bulletin, volume 126, pp. 347 - 374, 2000. Professor Lisa Diamond has made a compelling case that many women don't discover their "true" sexual identity until their 20's, 30's or even 40's.
A woman may reach her 40's, believe that she is a straight woman, and then find herself falling in love with her soulmate - who happens to be a woman. Here are three of Professor Diamond's most relevant articles:
"Female bisexuality from adolescence to adulthood: results from a 10-year longitudinal study," Developmental Psychology, volume 44, pp. 5 - 14, 2008.
"The evolution of plasticity in female-female desire," Journal of Psychology and Human Sexuality, volume 18, pp. 245 - 274, 2006.
"What does sexual orientation orient? A biobehavioral model distinguishing romantic love and sexual desire," Psychological Review, volume 110, pp. 173 - 192, 2003.
Note 4: John Mayer said what? John Mayer's current preference for pornography over sex with real women wasn't well-known until his interview with Rolling Stone (February 4 2010) and his March 2010 interview with Playboy magazine, in which he also explained why he now prefers porn over sex with actual women: because masturbation allows him to be in complete control. He said: "As soon as I lose that control, once I have to deal with someone else's desires, I cut and run . . . I'm more comfortable in my imagination than I am in actual human discovery."

Title: Saved - HA!

We seem to live like animals as it is... I don't see a very 'moral' society around me. Do you? A rights based society would be a better protection for ethical behaviour anyway, given the massive moral hypocrisy of our 'enlightened' Christians in this nation. They claim to be 'saved' before dying. Do s%^& M - Sat and then pray for it on Sun. Sounds really moral and 'saved' to me. ;-)

@ Folly, I tell you you gat a serious thing when it come to dis boongyin issue! In your twisted, large mind it seems like the most enlightened thing the Bahamas can do is allow civil unions for homos. Just a question, if we were to develop and do everything that first world countries do, but not allow civil unions would we still be an unenlightened backwater in your book? I mean it seems as though that is the zenith of your scale of enlightenment.

Title: @Common Non-sense

It is not against our self-interest, hence, no, I don't need a lecture. It is in the interest of a major tourism and financial hub to be able to advertise to the world that we have adopted the most enlightened and open society that is reasonably achievable given our limited education levels. Our economic and democratic self-interest in doing so is beyond clear. Israel and the United States have a great many problems defending their position as 'reasonable' on many counts. US support for Israel is finally shifting to a 'smarter' policy of carrots and sticks. In other words, they are finally saying, yes, you are our major ally in the region, but our alliance and our unbelievable financial support for your military security does not mean you can build settlements and take land forever. The US, in being alone on this in the UN so many times, is finally realizing that its bigger strategic goal - peace in the Middle East - cannot be achieved if Israel is allowed to be a 'rogue' state. It too must play by the rules.

Title: Civil Unions

Marriage between a man and a woman, agreed. Civil unions are another matter entirely... I agree with Obama's position in defense of marriage, but the 'rights' of marriage can be conferred without giving 'marriage' and they would end legal discrimination just as effectively to bring the Bahamas up to 21st century standards.

Barack Obama: 'marriage is between a man and a woman'
Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, has spelled out his views on gay marriage on the eve of the election.
The White House front-runner said in an interview with MTV he did not support same-sex weddings and believed "marriage is between a man and a woman".
But the Illinois senator reaffirmed his opposition to a proposition on the ballot in California that would change the state constitution to overturn a ruling that recently gave gay couples the right to marry.
"When you start playing around with constitutions just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that's not what America is about," the senator said.
"Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don't contract them," he added.
The Democratic presidential nominee voiced strong support for civil unions between same-sex couples "that provide legal rights to same-sex couples (so) that they can visit each other in the hospital if they get sick, (so) they can transfer property to each other. If they've got benefits, they can make sure those benefits apply to their partners."
He added: "I think that's the direction we need to go in. I think young people are ahead of the curve on this for the most part. Their attitude, generally, is that we should be respectful of all people, and that's the kind of politics I want to practice."
In the interview, Mr Obama described California's Proposition 8, which residents will vote on on Tuesday, as "unnecessary". Opponents of the measure hope Mr Obama's position will encourage voters in the Democratic state to defeat it.
The senator also opposes the federal Defence of Marriage Act that prevents states from having to recognise same-sex marriages performed in other states and voted against a federal constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
The question about gay marriage was sent in by an MTV viewer on Saturday and put to the senator during a campaign stop in Henderson, Nevada. His answers on a range of subject were to be broadcast in a programme called "Ask Obama".
MTV News said it also asked Republican presidential contender John McCain to take part in a similar question and answer session but he turned down the offer. The Arizona senator also opposes gay marriage and backs legal rights for same-sex couples but supports the federal Defence of Marriage Act.
The Obama campaign has devoted extensive efforts to energising the youth vote and is hoping a potentially historic turnout among young voters will help propel him to victory, although there has been little evidence of this in early voting.
According to the Pew Research Center, the Illinois senator leads his Republican rival 61-36 among voters aged 18 to 29.
Also in the MTV interview, Senator Obama answered questions on gun violence, civil liberties and ordinances that ban sagging trousers. "Any public official who is worrying about sagging pants needs to spend some time focusing on real problems out there," the senator commented. "Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants."

@Folly, apparently you do. BECAUSE, you seem to believe that it is "unenlighted" for a country to act against the "norm" in the protection of its self interest, even if it means standing against everyone else. Or does that only apply to countries that stand AGAINST CIVIL UNIONS FOR HOMOS?

Title: @I fa common sense and @Not a UN follower

@I fa common sense
I am well aware of Cuba's voting record and the voting record of the USA as it pertains to Cuba. The Cuban embargo has been an artificial 'cushion' for Bahamian tourism for the past 50 years. That will end sooner than later and we better have our act together before it happens. I don't need to be lectured on raison d'etat or self interest.
@Not a UN follower
You fail to understand the UN's mandate. The UN cannot do anything that its member states don't approve of. The UN doesn't have a standing army of its own. It's 'army' is comprised of troops committed by the donor countries and funds donated by those countries. Without the approval of the Security Council, the UN has no power to act. The Security Council is divided between the great powers - any veto by any power nullifies any and all action on a UN resolution. So, it goes without saying that it is a highly ineffective bureaucracy. Having said that, it serves a very, very important role as the forum for dialogue between the great powers. To 'blame' the UN is simply to blame the great powers for not coming to a consensus on something. People need to understand that. The other great role of the UN has been to enshrine the rights of humanity and persuade governments to sign on to and implement those rights. Those rights were built on the long legacy of western human rights traditions. They combine the historical understanding of the Magna Carta and that legal tradition and the first 'modern' rules of war - actually formulated for the US Civil War the first time. They gained greater importance at the end of WWI and then were substantially expanded at the end of WWII. The UN has a huge challenge, as you rightly pointed out, because many of its members are un-democratic. Having said that, the framework of the UN was built mostly by the United States and they imposed heavy safe guards to prevent a 'democracy and rights' leak from the original UN charter. The number of democracies in the world is actually at an all time high, historically, so I don't see a 'threat' of less democracy, since the number of democracies has actually been steadily increasing for a number of years now.

@ Folly, for about the past 15 years the VAST majority of the UN General Assembly has voted against the US embargo against Cuba. Yet, because of its own self interest, the US has refused to pay them any mind. The last vote was 187-3! I know you know this right? Countries do what is in their self interest!

Title: United Nations is not a Big Help

@Erasums concerning United Nations
United Nations are the so called best organization in the world. Yea right.
So the Foolish Erasamus believes and trusts in the Great United Nations. Wow! what a brain wash he is.
Why? United Nations did nothing to stop the Genocide in rwanda, Darfur, Sudan in Africa. Where our black brothers and sisters were being killed, raped, children sold into slavery or recruited as soldiers in a militia army.
But to be Fair These are the only things the UN has done :
it diffused the tension between USA and USSR over cuban crisis in 1962
it succeeded in averting the ARAB-ISRAEL war in 1967.
it averted war between ENGLAND AND EGYPT over suez canal crisis (1956)
independence to indonesia from the dutch.
UN, co-ordinated the eradication of smallpox in 1979.
UN agencies, such as the World Food Program and UNICEF, have fed and educated millions of people around the world.
Give sanctions lots and lots of sanctions, and if the country dose not comply, Then the U.N sends them more sanctions.
UN acts when and only when Us wants it to act. Why UN has not taken any action against US and UK as it is now amply clear that there were no Wepons of Mass Distruction in Iraq.
the universal declaration of human rights; which though not enforceable by the UN.
The United Nations is made up of a majority of non-democratic nations. This fact is its downfall and short-coming. True democracy can not and will not work when the vast majority is un-democratic.

Title: Opening a can of Worms

Marrying animals to exorcise ghosts
Practiced in: some regions of India
The Western culture is no stranger to superstition, especially during a wedding. Most brides would sooner set fire to the church and postpone the ceremony than to get married without something old, new, borrowed and blue. And don’t even think about trying to catch a glimpse of your wife-to-be before the nuptials or that’s 3 stitches to the temple right there on the spot.
But the Santhal tribe in India decided to one-up us all and cranked the wedding-crazy dial all the way up to 11. They believe that if a baby girl has a tooth rooted to her upper gum, it’s the obvious sign she will be eaten by a tiger or something in the near future, because ghosts hate her. Therefore, she must marry a dog. Such was the story of Karnamoni Handsa, a 9-year-old Indian girl who “married” the local stray Bacchan amidst the dancing and cheers of her 100 guests getting poofaced on home-made booze. Huh… Somehow the presence of moonshine in a cross-species wedding is not surprising in the least…
The good news is, this is nothing but a mock ceremony and the couple don’t have to consummate the wedding. It’s just to ward off the evil spirits so the girl can marry a real boy some time later. Thank God, otherwise this exorcism ritual between a child and a canine would have been really weird.
I say legalize cross species wedings since humans are animals or mammals to and are the higher species as well as Monkeys. Anybody had a good swing in a tree lately? or Had a good banana? What s the latest Fad in Monkey religion?
Dont mind me Im just joking. Im just trying to show how ridiculous it is for humans to marry animals. I just feel if gays wanted to marry each other then you would have crazy people wanting to marry animals next. Be careful when you open a can of worms!

You have to love that Bahamians go away to school, get educated, understand the world, come back home and then sadly have to deal with 'backwards', third world and uneducated thought every single day of their lives. That part I can deal with. But listening to these people talk and act like they 'know' something, anything, is just embarrassing and unbelievable frustrating. I'd rather negotiate with a brick wall on some days. It just sad. The level of ignorance in this country is a tragedy. For such a small population to have such endemic ignorance, sad really. Please, educate your children Bahamas! Invest in it, demand more from the government! Logic, reason, math and language skills are virtually non-existent here in far too large a segment of the population. Critical thinking and rational thinking are the prerequisites of any truly great democracy. Without them, over time, democracies fade and die. We can't perpetuate the ignorance here; we must instigate policies that reform education and help our people to think critically in the 21st century. Blind faith and ignorance may be bliss, but they don't benefit a society in the long term - they simply sow the seeds for collapse and dictatorship eventually. I say this as a proud and patriotic Bahamian, as a challenge to our leaders and our country as a whole - we must improve. We could very well be a 'beacon' to the world, but right now we are lost in our own shadow of ignorance. Educated Bahamians need to speak out more, they have been silent in the face of the ignorant and very vocal 'minority' for far too long. Time to speak up and restore the good name of the Bahamas!

Im trying 2 figure out since when does not approving the sexual behaviour of gays/lesbians and yet at the same time treating them as human beings ever amount to Hate.
Does my comment sound religious 2 anyone? It Shouldn't cuz I een quote no scripture, i een no christian either and i een from the ghetto!
Black people always keeping themselves down once they get some money and power its all over for da other brothas and sistas if U een working with them on their selfish, greedy vibe! In The Bahamas, the Rich Black man seems worst than the White man nowadays.

Title: The situation...

It is 'cute', but nonsensical, as with most of what you say, to speak of respecting gays and 'protecting' their rights while calling them 'boongy bandits'. I respect educated Bahamians. The uneducated... while it is not their fault in many cases... their opinions don't mean much to me if they aren't well thought out positions that they independently came to themselves. If they haven't thought through things themselves and just repeat whatever they hear from their surroundings like sheep, especially from their troubled 'shepherds' who rob them blind and take their money while doing all manner of 'nonsense' the rest of the time and preaching the 'get rich' version of Christianity that has invaded our shores.
No, those opinions mean very, very little to me, but I respect their right to them, even if I don't respect the content of their opinion because of its shallow understanding of the world. Anyway, you ignore the real point, as always. Do we belong with tin pot countries or first world democracies? Deep down, what Bahamas do you want to see? A rights based country or a theocratic retard state along the lines of Saudi Arabia or Iran? That is the point. Are we a rights based democracy and proud of it and aspiring to 'perfect' that or are we something backwards and proud of that and ready to slide on to the list of the world's most backwards regimes?

Just My 50 cents opinion.
Wow.....who would think that in the Bahamas we would try and stifle education by politics and who U know............and the educated Bahamians who come back home with degrees.
oh wait......nevermind.

Title: All together now...NO MARRIAGE for HOMOS

@ Mr. Folly, I sir, have no problem with anyone not sharing my views. That is why I don't try to denigrate anyone with opposing views. Unlike some people. I defend their right to boongy, I defend their right to say they want to marry, I also defend the rights of the majority of Bahamians to say," NO MARRIAGE for BOONGY BANDITS! I also respect the wishes of the Bahamian. Can you say the same?

I do defend your right to say it, if you defend their right not to share your views. That is the beauty of a rights based democracy. Don't you get it? Or are you just that thick?

Title: Defend my rights too...pleas

@Mr Folly, I like the term boongy bandit! That is MY RIGHT that you always speak of! I respect the Boongy bandit. The backward people of the Bahamas have decided that there are other pressing issues to be pursued at the moment. We can't do everything one time, we slow... can't multitask, and right now the last thing on our agenda is marriage for boongy bandits! NO MARRIAGE for BOONGY BANDITS!
Please defend my right to say BOONGY BANDIT!

Title: Naive as always common nonsense!

Do you even read what I write? I don't hate the Bahamas. I want to be honest about our problems so we can improve them. Don't be such a juvenile all the time. I am imploring my fellow countrymen and women to open their eyes, read, expand their horizons, learn more about the world than this shallow, myopic, limited overly proud culture currently 'allows' for. There is no hate in that message. I am imploring that we grow and evolve as a nation. We have been stuck in archaic ways for a long time now. To be honest and see oneself clearly is not to hate oneself, if one hates the points I have been making, that is because they cut deep and ring true and we need to grow as a country to overcome these faults. Only you and your repeated attacks on 'boongy bandits' are full of hate. Respect is the first criteria of civilized peoples.

@Mr Folly, the only person rambling all over this site expressing their hurt and hate, calling the citizens of this country all sorts of negative names, and making all manner of derogatory comments towards the inhabitants of these sunny isles is ..."YOU"!
If a person says they don't believe or support something how does that translate to hate? This connection can only be made by a person lacking sound judgment or a person with an agenda.

Title: Free Thinking

The real score: Bahamas = D- academic country, incapable of even defending its rights based democracy or thinking beyond its myopic hatred of 'minority' groups. This, ironic, from a nation that experienced, first hand, a liberation movement. 40 years later, the entire notion of rights and their importance and the hard fought victory for 'genuine' democracy is virtually forgotten. Why allow religious charlatans who cite Nazi propaganda to define who we are as a nation? Why allow the ignorant to set the tone for the kind of country we want to be? Why must our choice always be between 'Christian' or 'ghetto' in this country? What happened to free thinking people, tolerant people? Why the hatred?

Title: De-Criminalize

You might be shocked to know that I support the de-criminalization of marijuana in the Bahamas. However, after reading your writing, I am not so sure any longer that it is a good idea. ;-) Peter Tosh sang my true belief on the subject as well! ;-)
I don't believe government has the right to tell you who to date, what to smoke etc. If you aren't causing harm to another person, then there is NOTHING illegal about it. Perhaps, in advocating for the rights you are seeking, you will consider protecting the rights of others who don't share your beliefs, but nevertheless have beliefs that are being violated as well. That is the very essence of Parliamentary Democracy in a rights based democracy such as we have been blessed to inherit.

Blah Blah! i never mentiioned oral sex as natural sex which i believe is natural sex 4 pleasure obviously not 4 producing babies. anal sex as unnatural even tho some heterosexual do it. the anus wasn developed 2 take all dat chafing and action dats why some peoples anus come out from that stress of rthymic movement of a phallus or some dildo. Look at some heavyweight lifters who may strain to lift way beyond their peak strength and their guts can possibly come out of that intense pressure of very heavy weights. Very are for a vagina to fall out from penis action.
i dont know what u running on about rome 4. clearly history and today has proven that some catholics beliefs are not practical 4 today and also the wrongs that they have done to women, children, the jews and a few other things. its not good for their religion to supress the sexuality of their priests if the priests would then turn around and molest young boys or have sex with their catholic nuns and the offspring of their coupling was either hidden away or killed the babies as proved by the digging under some catholic buildings which found may infant skeletal remains.
i dont care about evolution or christianity. dont label me as something if i een tell u who I is. I believe in jah jah and i is rasta ma boy. jah rastafari, haile selassi! ma boy! Get ya crap straight. u beliveing in a white mans evolution theory and dat same evolution theory say black people come from monkeys only and not white people. Title: Final response to Erasmus Foolishness

Basing your view from the website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior
" The all-female Whiptail lizard species Cnemidophorus neomexicanus (center), which reproduces via parthenogenesis," that is natural for their species.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/parthenogenesis
says that parthenogenesis means the development of an egg without fertilization.
Parthenogenesis is asexaul reproduction if you dont belive me check out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexual_reproduction
Since asexual reproduction is "is reproduction which does not involve meiosis, ploidy reduction, or fertilization. Only one parent is involved in asexual reproduction." quoted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexual_reproduction
Which would be the female lizard then it doesnt need another female to help produce the egg cuz the one female can do it by themselves. U dont have 2 B a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
And your website which you listed as:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior
says "One female lies on top of another, playing the role of the male, the lizard that was on bottom has larger eggs. The lizards switch off this role each mating season.[13] "
It says playing the role of the male. the Point is even though the female on the bottom has larger eggs and the other female on top of her. doesnt mean the female on top help to produce the eggs. That defeats the purpose of asexaul reproduction which means, " Only one parent is involved in asexual reproduction" quoted from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexual_reproduction
But Still Doesnt mean that a gay man can have a baby without surgery or female hormones. That is not Natural meaning Homosexuality in humans is not natural.

Title: Info cont...

Humans might be on another level, but we are very much a part of the animal kingdom. To be precise, we are homo sapiens sapiens, as opposed to homo erectus, homo habilis or australopithecus - all ancestors of ours, amongst others. You can read all about them if you look up 'Lucy' on the internet. She was the oldest missing 'link' between us and the apes up until not too long ago - they found an older 'link' but they are still studying it in detail... few authoritative papers have been written on him yet.
Links to these articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_%28Australopithecus%29
Again, not everything on wikipedia can be simply taken as 'gospel', so check actual medical journals, research journals and zoological journals at actual universities for more information or get a REAL encyclopedia like Colliers or Britannica.
I personally don't see any reason that religion and science should 'war'. If people understand the moral message of Jesus, then they are doing great by their religion. Let the scientists study the world and let Jesus teach us morals - his lessons were good, not unique in the world, but very good.

Title: @history student

@history student
This isn't a conversation about how reproduction occurs. This is a conversation about what counts as 'normal' sex in the human species. No one is denying that reproduction occurs between a male and a female (for the most part - an exception has been found, but I won't even bother addressing that, it too makes me sick and I am sure the US news has done enough to publicize that case). Suffice it to say that 99.999999999999% of the time (for accuracy's sake) reproduction occurs between a male and a female. Reproduction is not sex though. Sex is a part of reproduction, but not every sexual act is done for the sake of reproduction. Is oral sex between a man and a woman 'unnatural' then? What about all those times that a married couple have sex, but don't want or intend to have children - is that unnatural? The church long upheld that stance. They also only 'sanctified' the missionary position. Of course, they passed all those rules while having orgies in Rome - that is what good clergy do - one set of rules for us and another set of rules for them. They were the original 'politicians' if you recall - the priestly class. If a woman decides that she wants to have her male partner have anal sex with her, is that also 'unnatural'? Homosexuality is just one of the expressions of variety in the human genome; we find the same variety of expression in the animal kingdom. There are theories as to why homosexuality has 'evolved', because it is counter-intuitive, prima facie, that evolution would even allow for homosexuality, but it has, so scientists are struggling to understand why. They have some interesting theories that make a lot of sense, but the question has only been studied, seriously studied, in fairly recent times, since prior to that, it was taboo.
However, all of this sidetracks from the main point, which you correctly asked me about: this isn't about natural, unnatural, moral, immoral, blah, blah, blah. This is about rights. If you value your right to believe in Christianity, then you should value someone else's right to believe differently. If that different believe leads them to believe in something else and/or do something else that you wouldn't approve of, so long as it causes no real harm to themselves, a minor or involves a transaction of money for 'illegal' purposes, then they should be free to do so - that is a mature and freedom loving democracy. That is what a rights based democracy is about, It is not simply 'tyranny' of the majority. We are a Parliamentary democracy for a reason. A direct democracy would be virtual anarchy, especially here where our education levels leave much to be desired and direct democracy would translate into 'thug' democracy very quickly.

Ok no more rambling.
Do dogs, cats, rats etc., do gayness for the species to survive?
Is homosexuality Natural?
May be rambling but you have no patience to read the points in there. Im not afraid of homos I dont like their lifestyle. That statement obviously doesnt mean Im telling people how to live their life. Im just expressing my opinion. And the simple common sense observation, fact and truth that homosexuality is not NATURAl!
Once again U failed to read or understand what i said many times. The admission that some animals display homosexual behavior. yes animals are in nature and just because some of them do gayness doesnt mean that its Natural or Normal. what is wrong with you. Why R U showing me this sight and i already said a few times that some animals do gayness. R U retarded?
Just because animals do gayness in nature doesnt mean that homosexuality is natural in Humans. You are actually making animals and humans equal. Which is not true. Humans are superiour & on a higher level than animals. Can a Gay Penguin make a baby penguin? No.
If You cant understand that all hope is lost in debating maturely with you, well it already is after so much exchanges and repeating the same thing to you. Man U hard head!

But can gays have children? no. they do their gayness for their kind of fun and go up the corporate ladder especially in ancinet rome and greece no student of history can deny that. But does that make gayness normal? No way no matter how many times it was practised behind closed doors. dey cant have children period. dey haddy get di woman.

Title: Someone Lacks Understanding of "Natural"

Erasmus honestly I think you are an animal and not a Human being. Have U been swinging in the jungle with your monkey friends today and practice evolution 4 Lunch?
Did you have fun with your bananas and higher species the monkeys? What did they say to you today? Did they want to communicate to you in primitive monkey talk? I bet U can undrstand every monkey sound, since U cant understand a lick of English. Go back to the cave you evolutionize from please.
Once again U failed to read what I posted 3 times earlier. I never said Nature was only i the Bible. I didnt even quoted a sripture. U really dont have the logic to read what the he*ck im writing. I said if you look in your own backyard or even on the street with common sense you will see that puppies, little birds come from male female copulaation.
Im saying again that that is natural. The numberr 1 purpose for sex in all living things is reproduction, (Sexual pleasure is Secondary) that is scientific, common sense, and natural. I dont even have to mention the bible or the Koran for that.
Let me repeat since you are void of understanding. No kidding science is the world as we see it. But U dont see a baby coming out of a male mans anus, or a male monkey anus, or a male pigeon anus, or a male donkey anus etc. Need I go on?
I guess u came out of a males anus cuz U cant admit. That you came from your own mother. Thats what I can assume from you. You cant admit the common sense truth that babies come from females.
Hormone replacement therapy is science but it is not natural in regards to a man taking female hormones to have breasts, soft skin, lighter voice. And then for those who are into sex change pay for an operation to replace the genitals that they are born with to another gender by knife and needles. Now tell me you so called educated person how is that surgery natural.
It s only the choice of gay or lesbian to be with the same sex bec ause they enjoy bungying each other 4 pleasure & enjoy each other company 4 whatever reason. Im saying thats their choice and it s not Natural. U so fool because I hardly mentioned the Bible but U forget or neglect to recognize that homosexuality aint recognized in the Muslim religion. So U should try debating with them. Im sure Allah is not pleased with Homos by their Religion.
However, I find myself keep repeating to you of common sense natural observation of the most important species humans. Dogs, cats, rats, birds, fish, dolphins and other mammals reproduce by male and female relations. Yes I think U Faeiled Biology 101 or U JUST Plain confused on How this world Goes round and How children come into this world. Heterosexuals produce childrren, Gays/Lesbians adopt straight children not produce how confusing it is for some of those little ones.
Your understanding is retarded not normal. I am not ignorant U are. Im wasting my time responding to your Garbage because you cant see the pigeons in the trees and the potcakes humping on the side of the road. But you imagine that all dogs and mammals are gay thats what I assume from you.
U really must be gay or a homosympathizer cuz U obviously programmed by I dont nkow what to put words in my mouth of things I didnot even say or write.
U so dogone retarded and foolish. U display your ignorance by #1 not admitting the obvious truth Of Natural Copulation in the Animal Kingdom (tell me now u Stupid F*ool if that is a Bible Scripture Cant U read lol, Probably not! ,lol ) and #2 U show How Fool U are cuz U Claimed that I said Im telling People how to live their life. I am not All Im saying is Sincce you Cant read or Understand what Im saying that Homosexuality is not Normal. Is that Chinese, Is that Spanish, Or do U only can understand Monkey talk, Or U understand Doggy Doo Doo Quite well? I think U really Do.
Do you know that blood, water, mucus, (and a little nutrients come out when they cut the umblical Cord) comes out as well as the baby out of the womb. I have never heard of a baby coming out of a male anus. Dats unhealthy, waste fecal matter at the exit hole. Why Does a gay male wants to put his member in another males anus. Its because they both agree to it. Thats their choice, But Does it make their Gay activities NATURAL? No it doesnt. Cuz a baby cant come out there and no female eggs up in there. R U So Dumb that You cant understand or admit that? U mussy is dumb, blind and deaf.
Im just saying Gay aint Natural. If Gay people or anybody wants to be gay fine thats their choice. All Im saying is it aint Natural Bottom line. But U so retarded that you cant even read or understand what I just typed.
U have a nice Life. And please listen carefully to the majority of people in this country, the Eastern coutries including the Muslim world, the rest of the Carribean, and not just Europe, Canada or America of whatever the opinion is on the Subject.
But Gay/Lesbian is not Natural. Something U cant Understand because your understanding on that issue is retarded and biased. U need to Listen and read more when people post their comments on this website. Your failure of understanding what someone typed as their comments is Amazing! Just dont push your dumb views on anybody else since you lack understanding and your ability to debate which is very small. Just Grow Up why Dont U?
Insane = Utterly Senseless (1 of the meanings). Yep, It's Official your INSANE not I. U fail to understand what im saying putting words in my mouth of what i didnt say. What A Incredible Retarded Case U are!

Title: Nature vs Insanity

Your 'logic' to explain 'Virgin Birth' is all that is required. It is illogical. My point is made. You yourself have no understanding of 'nature'. Nature is not what is in The Bible. Nature is the world as we see it and understand it - the world as it is presented to us - directly to us - not via the interpretations of another man or person. Enjoy your life, but don't tell sensible people how to live theirs. You have forfeited that right with your lack of reason and logic.

Title: Last response to ignorant Erasmus

No deal. How in the world can i prove a virgin birth as natural. Thats impossible! nobody has virgin births. ONly in the belief system from the New testament has it occured in the Christin religion not today obviously. And even still if U look at it in detail. The Virgin conception is supernatural but the Virgin birth is Natural with Mary being in pain delivering the Christ out of her womb. That is proof of the Naturalness of the Virgin birth. U just put your foot in your mouth!
If you go int the Muslim world and procalaim yur a homosexaul lets see what happens to you. A gay person wont live long in the muslim world. That is a fact.
Be honest in Nature there are some species has a natural ability switch genders unlike some humans who are gay have 2 take hormones thats not natural, Du Cant U see that!
Obviously if you learnt about religion is high school the virgin birth is not Natural but supernatural. If one has the belief to accept it not necessarily as truth for them but as learning what some people believe in the Christian Religion.
You are being difficult/impossible! Im trying to have a sensible argument here based on facts. And you just kind of answered my question indirectly. Obviously the virgin birth is not natural its supernatural from a biblical view and its not natural cuz it has never happened unless u have the exception of 1 virgin birth of Christ if a person choses to believe. There are approximately 216,000 babies born every day in the whole entire world. And i assure you and you would also agree that not 1 of them is a virgin birth.
So to reiterate virgin birth = supernatural or impossible or not natural. And homosexuality = unnatural not supernatural. Possible between 2 of the same sex but impossible in producing a baby.
On what cotton picking field are there higher mammals? Humans are the higher mammals not monkeys. I dont ignore the extensive science on the matter. Let me tell you something yes if everyone is all honest here and studied biology and watched natural geographic that some creatures like dogs, some monkeys, or some species of fish have sex with the same gender. Why they do it for practice in the puberty stage? for their kind of so called fun?, or to remove their female genitals to grow male genitals when there isnt enough males of that particular species in that environment of mostly females (like some fish do). I bet u they dont do it every day or every other day like they do when its time to procreate or have fun! The Point is what matters are human relations, we are the higher species/mammals. I hope u dont mean tree swinging monkeys as the higher species/mammals.
You are such an educated moron or u paper smart but not wise at all. Or should I say an educated foo*l! Why I say because i never claimed that the Bible is my only source of info or authority concerning homosexuality. I will repeat for the upteenth time you ignoramus that Biology 101 shows that homosexuality is not natural. Common sense and simple observation of the animals that live in your yard or neighbor hood or in the wild or jungle shows that there are more male and female humping going on than same sex relations.
Every Human birth was & is a result of male female relations thats all Im saying. Cant you read or understand english or perhaps you can only understand that in your native monkey bonobis language ooh oh aah aah. Do you want a banana 2 go with that? lol. See now u got me all pissed off because you cant or wont answer a reasonable question! Well not pi**ssed but mad a little!
Im not accusing you of total ignorance like when you called me being responsible for the whole bahamas being backwards! Now that show s me who is really ignorant, you. But Im calling you ignorant not totally ignorant isnt that fair of me. That is the difference between me and you fairness, common sense, wisdom and real education!
I bet you believe in that reatrded theory of evolution! Of man coming from monkeys or fish come from a single organism. If that crap is true where is the evidence now? How come i dont see a gorilla turning into some gorgeous female like a baywatch babe? I never said that you owe me an explanation once again you prove that you are not totally literate and read what I said previously in an earlier comment. Your proving 2 me bit by bit that you are an educated fool. I dont mean that as a vicious diss but a respectable observation by what you say or write.
Oh i do read. I am not forcing you to answer my question i simply asked you. I dint put a gu*n to your head & gu**nn butted u to tell me. Geez! its just a question you can answer it or not. But dont try to inslult other people intelligence by saying I am forcing you. Fool evidence again by you. I never said 1 book has all the answers.
Fool evidence of yourself again when you so blinded by whatever is up their in your narrow minded brain. I never even quoted a scripture from the Bible to prove or suggest that the bible has all the answers. Can you actually read or comprehend? Do you even know how to be fair? Or have an intellectual argument?
I have an education my passionate about ignorance, prideful educated acquaintance. A Bachelor degree at that. But enuf of myself im not self absorbed and a know it all like you come across. I argue fair thats something u cant or dont want 2 do.
Did I mention anything about morals? Let me answer that question since you never read that sign or seemingly never participated in Let's Read Bahamas program! the answer is no. I never mentioned anything about morals. Just being natural. Is homosexuality natural was my question.
Some people cant read! I tell ya! U said defending other peoples rights u defend your own. I agree 2 that to a certain extent. But once again yur evidence of you being a educated fo*ol shows up again. U cant help yourself,eh? Ok I stop calling u names. Does that mean i Hate U? No. Does that Mean I want 2 hurt U? No. Im just using a negative term to tease you in a informal way of what i think you are by the evidence that you display in your writings. Im calling a duck a duck cuz u sure sound like one. Well i meant educated fool! Oops im sorry it slipped! But 4 real i apologize 4 the name calling what example am i setting, eh?
But Honestly theese exchanges prove 2 me that you dont understand on earth what im saying or where Im coming from! for the last time I said earlier that gays can have the basic human rights i have no problem with that. But getting married or civil unions is basically almost the same thing, I am a against that. Because I know and think its not natural. I am against gays even changing their sexual organs not that I want 2 control them and tell them what 2 do but it sends a messenge on the immature youth, children.Let gays just be domestic partners and if their gay partner want s to add their gay partner on their insurance then let that be. If gays want to have equal pay with straight men fine. geez i keep repeating myself to you Erasmus cant u read. If But dont go in the Church and say its ordained of God because God is love. What garbage!
You are right u have nothing to teach me cuz what you argue about is some rubbish! unlike U i take the high road and did not say complete/total rubbish.
I wonder if U know what the high road means anyway, just a thought!, lol.
Democracy is about majority. If the Majority of a people are heterosexaul and they WANT and vote or protest to outlaw gay marriage. Majority rules! Now on the same note Since the Majority of people are heterosexaul and they WANT and vote or protest or argue or change laws to legalize gay marriage. Then Guess what, majority rules again. Even if their minds were brainwashed by dumb donkey so called intellectual arguments of God is love and gays should marry. I understand the arguments of civil rights. But for the billionth time Im saying its not Nautal Like my Ma who used to beat me used 2 say me Now I say 2 U. What Part of Dat dont U understand. Read man!
Just cuz I dont agree, think and know that Homosexualty is not Nautal doesnt mean im afraid or homophobic. OOh im going to run away from a man that acts like a woman, who just may want lady parts via surgery. Wow! I dont find that scary I find that UNNATRAL, even tho thats his homosexual choice. Can Understand that? I cant break it down any further in laymans terms for U. thats Simple English.
I totally agree with you on 1 thing tho it is a sad Bahamas 4 true. The opportunites that we have missed or may be missing now as a little nation. I mean look at Harold Road dump 4 example. Does it have 2 take so long 2 actually do something about it & couldve been take =n care of a looooggg time ago. And a subdivision living near that dump smelling garbage & have to hose down their roofs with water cuz of a threat of fire from the dump! What a Shame! Just an example.
The real tragedy is U dont want to reasonably answer my question is Homosexuality natural between Humans. I guess I should have mentioned the between Humans part long ago but I thought U, Erasmus understood that already. U answered my question with a question that is in my opinion tragic. Even tho it really isnt.
This is my last Response Cuz U dont want to understand Erasmus!

Title: Naturalness indeed!

I'll make you a deal. You explain to me the 'naturalness' of a virgin birth and I'll explain to you the 'naturalness' of homosexuality.
You 'choose' to ignore that it is a trait shared by other 'higher' mammals. You choose to ignore the extensive science on the matter. You choose to believe that the only 'authority' in the world on all matter is 'The Bible'. You choose to ignore the message of Jesus and instead focus on the Old Testament's silly injunctions against gays, shellfish and working on certain days. Yet, you have the audacity to accuse me of ignorance (when I clearly read more diversely) and the audacity to expect that I owe you an explanation of what should be more than obvious to anyone with an iota of education. Sorry, the smart don't work so hard, read so much and think through things so thoroughly to be forced to explain themselves to people who don't read, don't think and believe that one book has all the answers. Nope, it doesn't work that way. You go get some education and then maybe, we can debate. Until then, keep thumping your Bible, believing in virgin births... I'll send the tooth fairy for my 'cheque' later on. ;-)
This isn't a morality issue for the umteenth time. You Christians will have your 'right' to believe your zany beliefs better protected if you understand what a modern 'rights' based democracy is. In defending other people's rights, you protect your own. Until that lesson is learned, I certainly have nothing to teach someone whose ears, eyes and soul are closed with hate, ignorance and homophobia. It is a sad Bahamas we live in, it really is. D- people have the audacity to call the educated 'ignorant'. Laughable if it wasn't so tragic!

Title: ABSURD!!!

IT IS DEFINATELY UNNATURALL!!!!!! GAYS NEED TO GET IT THROUGH THEIR HEADS. There is no beneficial reason to accept homosexuality in any society. It is just as act of slackness. It is disgusting and repulsive. If thats what you wanna do, then what ever, but dont come thinkin you have somekinda special rights. If you cant do what everyone else does without having to fight for it, then you are definately doing something wrong. The laws of nature has been layed down centuries ago. If you have a problem with it go frigg yourselves.

Title: Response to Erasmus

@Backwards written by Erasumus Folly.
Right back at you> U are the ignorant one.
U moron! U R wrong! How can 1 person as myself reflect everything that is backwards in this place? Am I the Devil or the Ad-Dajjal (the 'Great Deceiver'), or Loki, or Mara, or Shaitan, Voland? U Educated f**l moron! This place is backwards because of SOME BACKWARDS people in this country. If everyone obeyed the laws of the land whether they be old or modernized or not. There will be less crime, there will be actual hangings, less traffic accident because some people will really be paying fines and getting tickets for sppeeding, white collar criminals will go to jail and pay back what they stole from customers, investors or tourists, etc., would be more people being afraid of the law than mocking it. And if some leaders actually do things with vision with the long term in mind and heart then This country will be less backwards than what it is. That is true. I cannot reflect everything that is backwards in this little nation which has some people in it afraid of doing great things or being held back from doing great things.
Understand this to let it be Clear to You I am not Afraid of homosexuals, i do not hate homosexuals nor do i want to hurt them or end their life. You moron! Just like i dont like someone sneezing in their hand with their snot and want to shake my hand after i see them do it it in front of me is disgusting. Germs from someones mucus on their hand is disgusting! That is how i view homosexuality in the same way disgusting, you moron! And its unnatural!
Im not like the other hypocrites or some christians who want to end the life of homos or lesbians. U let people make their own decisions no matter how dumb or unatural (like homosexuality is) it may be. Some people in this world can learn the easy way or the hard way. I or any right common sense natural thinker have never heard of a baby coming out of a man's rectum after 6 months because some male phallus had been there before. Or a female vulva rubbing on another female vulva or a female mouth on anothers female vulva ever produced a child. There is no Sperm Egg being united in the homosexual or lesbian practises at all! Holla back at me you right thinkers and alll of you who agree with me and sees the Light!
Learning is not ignorance my bro or sis, recognizing the obvious natural order of things is not ignorance or hate. Not admitting the truth when its clear as day in front of you is ignorance. I will repeat i dont want 2 harm any homosexual in any way. I dont like or agree with the lifestyle even though I cant change a homosexaul only a person can change themselves. Tthere is only a few exceptions to that if a homo tries 2 molest a child is a different story. If that homo is not a child molester, I would not want 2 harm him or her. Do u get that? that is clear english. The issues are about rights and influencing a culture of people whether they be old or young with regards to the homosexuality issue.
There are many people in this world with various opinions. Even in religuous groups or denominations within a religion u have various views. Example some Christians want to harm homos others dont, duh! Some Christians believe in having 1 wife some believe more than 1!
If you so smart & educated answer this question if you are a homosexual or a homosexaul sympathizer.
You cannot Hide the real Natural Human nature no matter how you try to change laws with votes especially in the US. Remember male member goes into female luv tunnel, male sperm & female egg makes a baby. What a reminder folks!
HOmosexuals are welcome 2 respond to this question I want to hear yur honest response to see where sum of yall mind is at whether u can honestly & naturally reason or R some a y'all blinded by politicsally correct views or the gay lifestyle. If sum a yall gay or homo sympathizer cant give a honest answer i will defintely know dta yur thinking is dark indeed.
Question is: Is homosexuality Natural or Unnatural? Can Anybody honestly answer that question without some fake donkey butt bias or politically correct answer.

@Against Homosexuality
You betray exactly the kind of Bahamian ignorance, hate and lack of understanding that holds this country back. Your right to do what you want in your bedroom is protected MORE if others have the right to do what they want in their bedroom. This is not a moral/ethical issue. This is about what your government has the right to allow or not allow and I, for one, caring about human rights, want the government out of EVERYONE's bedroom. Yours, mine and theirs. Why doesn't that register? How thick do you have to be not to understand this as a RIGHTS issue for ALL of US? Should gays in the Bahamas have the right to marry? I never suggested that they need to, but I would definitely allow them to have full 'civil unions' with all the benefits of marriage, but without the word 'marriage', which I agree, was a religious ceremony and should thus be reserved for the religions that created it. The rest is a non-issue though. Your hate is built on fear, ignorance and a primitive mentality essentially - a mentality not educated enough to understand that this is as much about your rights as it is about theirs. Sad really. This country will not develop or grow if the ghetto and ignorance are the order of the day. You reflect everything that is backwards about this place. Very sad.

Title: Understand People

homosexuality is against nature they cannot reproduce, therefore they adopt. Yes that is their business to enter at the exit sign. That is their personal choice. But dont try to put it in law for it to be okay to marry 2 men or women and change a cultre of a country by changing its laws to be more accepting of the sexuality of gays & lesbians.
Pleasse somebody answer the below question.
Yes treat humans as humans straight or gay. But why cant gay or lesbian people be honest and admit that what they are doing is unnatural. Its simple Biology 101. Not Gay Bioology 101. A baby cant come out of an ass! a baby comes out of a real female vagina. Why you think some gay people want to have female vaginas by surgery. Why not invent a surgery so gay men can have a baby out of their as*es! Im not joking Im serious!
It appears to me the whole argument of gays and lesbians is to be treated fairly. Ok. But its not normal for 2 men 2 be married Im sorry. You want equal pay fine. you want to stand in line at the foodstore and not be pushed out of line thats fine too., etc.
Just take your normal treatment and whatever you take behind closed doors but we normal people dont have to tak you gay people fighting to have your unnatural lifestyle as normal into law. We aint having it! Just argue for basic human rights excluding getting married, or having some dumb donkey law saying its a hate crime to call gays a "sis*y" or "fa*got" which gays were labeled as a long time ago. Where is the hate in those 2 words. Let me educate you and give you an example of hatred in words when someone says they will end a life of a si**y or fa*got that is hatred or murder not calling a person si**y only!

Title: History

As to homosexuality being 'new'. That is nonsense. Read a little history. Homesexuality is as old as man himself. All historic records, going back further than even Greece and Rome speak of and describe homosexuality - in all cultures - from Asia to Europe to the Americas. Don't be naive. Read some history before making ridiculous claims.

Title: For the record...

For the record, I am a hetero-sexual male who has only ever dated women, is currently in a long term relationship of several years, is 100% confident in his sexuality, has no fear or intimidation or worry from any gay people and understands fully that some people are just born different. I have this belief because I have seen it first hand. Friends who are gay are just born that way. I 'defend' gay rights not as a 'moral' issue. Morality is for you and your God and your morals are about your OWN personal choices in life - not those of other people. God will not judge you for something someone else did. I 'defend' the rights of all people in the Bahamas to live in free personal choice as regards their sexuality. I am not defending 'them' alone, as in the gays. The principle of law is that it should treat ALL people fairly and equally. Right now, the Bahamas DISCRIMINATES against gay people. So, when you say, stop giving them 'special rights' that is nonsense. No one is saying to give anyone 'special rights'. What is said is, give them the same rights you and I enjoy. We must end the reign of ignorance and stupidity in this country and bring this country up to the standard of all the great first world democracies in the world - do you stand with the western world and democratic freedom or do you stand with the despotic Arab regimes and backwards African dictators and all other countries with low levels of rule of law and human rights?
As an international finance centre and tourism hub, ask yourself, seriously, where you think the Bahamas belongs?
Respectfully yours,
Erasmus Folly

Title: Homophoiba is pure fear and ignorance!

You lose nothing. It is about civil rights - human rights. These people aren't DOING anything to you. So stop acting like they are coming in your home or something. They are simply asking to be left alone; to have the same rights you and I enjoy. What are you talking about? What soul are you going to lose because two people hook up that have nothing to do with you. Stop being so concerned with other people and focus on your own actions, your own works and your own soul - that is the only route of salvation you need to worry about. Their problems with God are their own - not yours. Who are you to judge? You aren't losing any morals. You are simply allowing people to live their lives and meet their maker on their own terms. God says, judgment is mine, so... what is the big deal? How are you offended by what two people do in the privacy of their own home? Why aren't you speaking out about sweet-hearting on this island - which is the real MORAL threat to our society?! Why so concerned with a few gays?
I close with two lists:
List 1: Supporting:
All members of the EU: European Union (27)
* France Initiative
* Netherlands Initiative
And: Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herz, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, Central African Rep, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Croatia, East Timor, Ecuador, Gabon, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Mauritius, Mexico, Montenegro, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Paraguay, São Tomé and Prí, Serbia, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela
List 2: Against
Arab League (22)
* Syria Initiative
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Benin, Brunei, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, The Gambia, Guinea, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mali, Maldives, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Rwanda, San Marino, Saint Lucia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Togo, Uganda, Zimbabwe
Now, the point of posting this list is that all of the democracies are in the former category and all of the dictatorships, backwards countries, tin pot leaders and lack of human rights countries are in the latter list. Which list do you think the Bahamas, as an international finance centre and tourism centre belongs on?
People need to understand. This is not a reglious/morality issue at all. This is about the rights of human beings versus their governments. This is about what the government can and cannot tell you to do. This is about whether or not the government can tell you who to date, why, what you can do with that person, and what you can or can't do in the privacy of your own home. It is about RIGHTS, period, not just Gay Rights.
You don't have to be gay or support gays to understand that. This is about freedom versus government control. Get the government out of all bedrooms: yours, mine, gay people... everyone's bedroom. A government should not have the right to tell people what they can and cannot do in their private, personal lives. If it isn't causing harm to anyone else, then government doesn't need to be part of that equation. That is the difference.

Title: KEEP IT TO YOUR SELF. PLEASE

I must say Erasmus, you make it quite clear your stand on this topic. One would almost go as far as to say that maybe this is your sexual preference. But even if it was, its your business. It is also your business to recognize that just like homo-sexuals have a right to their personal opinions, so do and even more hetero sexuals. Stop trying to change persons opinion and beliefs just because you feel insecure about your own. Many of us were born and bred to be hetero sexuals. So it is only natural to be against something that was so damned and condemned only thirty years ago in our own country. Only recently has home sexuals become so bold and 'out there' thanks to influence by the western media. I personally am disgusted by the acts of homo- sexuals. But it doesnt mean i hate the person themselves. We can be cool but keep your business to yourself. You dont see heter sexuals broadcasting their sexuality out in public to make a point, and do you know why that is??? Its because what they do is considered normal and does not go against nature. Please. If you want to do those things, keep it to yourself. Homo- sexuals are the late comers in this game. Hetero- sexualuality has been here from the beginning of the human race. It is OBVIOUSLY how God ordained things to be.

Title: @Deja

Your caps and 'shouting' go hand in hand with the Taliban 'Christianity' that you advocate. Ignorance, sadly, is the rule of the day in this country. Our people are, in far too great numbers, woefully ignorant, prejudice, xenophobic, homophobic and overly religious. For an international tourism and financial sector hub, the lack of education amongst our people is an outright travesty. Bahamian 'pride' is a disease in this society, because it is built on vanity, ignorance, fake 'nationalism' as opposed to genuine patriotism and fake 'religiousity' as opposed to a true and deep spiritual way of life. Until that changes, this country will continue to be defined by the kind of morons who shout in capital letters, but have nothing positive to offer but hatred, intolerance, ignorance and 'the ghetto'. It is very, very sad that the most beautiful country in the world has so much ignorance. Homophobia is a disease built on people's insecurities, prejudices and frailties. To be homophobic is to respond from fear and insecurity rather than genuine self-esteem and confidence. A confident person understands that all people should be treated fairly and equally. Homosexuals aren't looking for 'special' treatment. They are asking to be allowed to be themselves, to have property together, to have visitation rights at hospitals, and to be respected as a contributing member of the community. In essence, they aren't asking for anything that all of us heterosexuals don't enjoy everyday. We get to live our lives; can't they? It's not like they are going to storm into your house or something. Why the fear? Why the hate? What kind of Christianity is that? Bogus if you ask me! This country's 'sweethearting' should be what people are talking about - not homosexuality - the hypocrisy is mind blowing! Talk about a lack of morals!

Title: Why

Why do I need to know? A person's sexual orientation seems to me to be a private matter. I can't look at a person and determie if they are gay. I can speculate but I would guess that I would be wrong as often as right. I am bemused at the insistance of separate and particular "gay rights", in a society such as ours. When we begin establishng particular rights for particular sexual categories, where does it stop. Do we ignore the particular rights of toe suckers? It would seem to me that gays can take care of themselves, functioning in society like everyone else, because like everyone else they would limit their sexual practice to their bedrooms. As far as marriage; this is a religious rite established by the same church which condemns homosexuality. That is something to be resolved within the religious community. The legality of a persons right to property etc. should be able to be resolved by legal covenants between parties governing the use and control of their property and assets. It seems to me that the gay community's insistance on separate recognition does more harm to their cause of a having a normal life in society.

Title: UN Charter on Human Rights

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UN_declaration_on_sexual_orientation_and_gender_identity
Here is a link with some useful info. There is nothing that says anything like homosexuality is genocide. That is a vicious and silly lie.
Furthermore, please take the time to look at the countries that side for the wording of the UN Charter that would protect people from gender/sexual discrimination. Then look at the list of countries that oppose. Notice anything?
That's right, if the Bahamas opposes, then we are smack in line with all of the backwards, corrupt and despotic regimes of the world. If we agree, then we are in line with enlightened, freedom loving democracies. Which are we? A backwards country? Or part of the enlightened, civilized and educated world? Are we Taliban Christians or educated people?
I, for one, am tired of these Christian Talibans amongst us who know nothing and spout out nonsensical drivel at every chance because they clearly are making up for whatever shortcomings exist in their own personal lives. Your personal struggles with God are your own - religion is a private matter between you and your maker. Stop trying to force it on everyone else. No gay person is telling you to be gay or act gay or to be straight or to be religious or what have you; they are simply saying - LEAVE ME ALONE! READ Bahamas, open your minds, open your eyes! This rock is a small and ignorant place... stop defending ignorance and making this country look like some backward religious fundamentalist/Taliban place! We are supposed to be a Mecca for tourists - not for intolerance and religious nuts!

Title: Rubbish

This statement is false: According to the United Nation Charter on crimes against humanity , homosexuality is GENOCIDE.
As to this statement: WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON, GOD OR man? This statement is illogical. One cannot be on any other side than a man's or woman's side - humanity. You have no more claim to God, than I, so claiming to speak 'for' him is rubbish. At most, you speak for your church or pastor, so please, have a little hubris. Speaking for God is beyond any of us to do. A little education would dissolve these delusions of grandeur very quickly.
Finally, the real UGLY Bahamian super-Christian nationalistic ignorance reveals itself... citing the UN charter on Human Rights to say that homosexuality is genocide... has ignorance no bounds in this country? Did you just make that up on the spot or did your pastor whisper it to you? Education = Freedom: Ignorance = Slavery

Title: SEXUALITY AGENDA

With all due respect, when has DEMOCRACY BECOME DEFINED BY SEXUALITY? This notion is as absurd as DEMOCRACY BEING DEFINED BY CRIMINALITY.Should someone have the RIGHT to commit a WRONG? According to the United Nation Charter on crimes against humanity , homosexuality is GENOCIDE.This life style seeks to make mankind extinct, because two males or two females CANNOT procreate. The preamble to the constitution of the Bahamas make such an act (homosexuality) UN-GODLY. I know the SODOMITES have their agenda, but the fundamental question is WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON, GOD OR man?

Posted By: Erasmus Folly On: 3/4/2010

Title: Science Etc

Fair enough, but I beseech you to research, with an open mind, sexuality in all higher mammals. You will find that the science on it is quite clear. In the top areas of research and at the top schools, there is absolutely no doubt. The majority that are gay are born that way. Where there is a doubt is, what percentage who are not strictly born that way are environmentally influenced and, if so, to what degree? That is a separate issue though, as on that front, they are simply trying to determine the percentage - be it 5, 10 or 15%, but they know it isn't higher than that. Given that this is the case, and, given that you agree that consenting adults, in a real democracy, should have choice, then where is the dissent or question or issue? Let's give another example, it has been shown that some hardened criminals appear to have some genetic traits that can predict that they may be violent people. However, not all of them turn violent. They aren't sure what the percentage is, but they are still researching. In the mean time, should society take protective measures, identify people with the trait, and preemptively castigate or harass them to ensure they don't 'become' violent later? That is, in effect, what is argued when people advocate not giving equal rights to gay people. It sounds ludicrous for a criminal, so why not for a gay person? Only one reason worldwide, orthodoxy in religious thinkers who can't stomach the idea of two other people, who they have never met and will probably never interact with in any meaningful way, enjoying intimacy and love in their own way. It is beyond absurd, petty, trite and sadly ignorant.
As to your comment about the scientist in Time, it is wonderful that he was featured in Time, but again, I don't pay much attention to scientists who work at Institutes that are actively researching something to prove a point or disprove a point. That is bad science. Basic science starts with apathetic hypothesis which are tested and then discarded or improved. If you have a starting hypothesis that you are reluctant to part with, that obscures the scientific process. So, climate studies financed by oil companies - invalid. Research into homosexuality by either the 'pro' or 'con' side - invalid.
Beyond that, rely on personal experience. The gay people you have met, do you honestly think they weren't born that way? All the ones that I have known growing up, it was evident early on and that tends to rule out nurture pretty quickly.
Enjoyed your points though.

Posted By: minor On: 3/4/2010

Title: What cop out?

I agreed with your whole consenting adults thing earlier, don't know why you mention it.
The scientist mentioned was featured in Time and was considered on the cutting edge of the field.
The fact that he admitted he had the views on the subject he studied was simply being honest. It would be just as bad for him to pretend he had no opinion on the matter when he did.
It seems you have a nice bit circular reasoning here.
All real science says gays are born that way.
Any science that says otherwise is junk science.
I am not going to waste they time to post a 100 different things that support my point view so you can say they are junk.
Let us be civil and accept that an argument is pointless.

Title: Cop out

Nice cop out. In a true democracy, adults should have the right to determine their own sexual preferences, so long as that involves consenting adults, no monetary gain (direct) and no minors. That is the highest 'zenith' of freedom that can be achieved by a society that truly values freedom - defined as the least interference by the state where appropriate. The Chinese call it wu-wei. All traditions, eastern and western, state that the state that needs to interfere the least with its people is the state with the highest virtue. We interfere too much!

I could rebuff with other studies and science but then you'ld call them junk and its pointless.

Title: Points

Nothing you have said over turns my points. The general scientific consensus is that most homosexuals are born that way. They agree that environment (nurture) plays some role, but they cannot escape the conclusion that environment alone is not the story. Once you concede that some, if not most, gay people are born with their orientation pre-determined, then it becomes a matter of innate right that such orientation be protected as a democratic right and freedom of any adult. This is the general consensus of the world's preeminent human biologists - the ones who work at the top universities in the top research positions - again, not the crackpots at Institutes for x or y. The ones who do real 'basic science' research.
One scientist in San Francisco doesn't mean much to me. He too is 'cancelled' off my list of valid scientists, because he set out to do science with a specific agenda - that is inherently unscientific. Just because he set out for it on 'my side' of the argument doesn't mean I support him. That is not science. That is corporate/marketing science - here is the agenda, match the evidence. Global warming has been done that way too, on the 'anti' side of the debate. Oil and gas companies fun crackpots to disprove global warming - that is not science. The few 'mistakes' on the UN report are small errors and already corrected. They have been blown way out of proportion - again, because the public does not respect basic science and is deeply confused as to who is a 'real' scientist and who is a crackpot working in a lab paid by someone with an agenda.
I don't get my real information from wiki-anything, by the way. You have to read real books and take real courses for real information that is not politically 'clouded'. Politics and religion are the enemy of free thinking, learning and discovery - always. They always bend the curious mind to a particular question/agenda and happily obscure the rest.
Still not the same coin, sorry.

Title: science

I find it interesting that you reference global warming.
Like global warming any facts that do not fit the conclusions some wish to reach are dismissed as fake and shouted down.
The email scandal around global warming showed them discarding and suppressing data they did not like. But this thread isn't about global warming so lets not debate that.
Please read this from wiki and footnoted no less...
Nonetheless, it is possible to conclude that, given the difference in sexuality in so many sets of identical twins (who are genetically identical, and shared the same fetal environment), sexual orientation cannot be purely caused by genetics.
Simon LeVay, a neuroanatomist at The Salk Institute in San Diego, founded the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Education in San Francisco after researching and publishing the study of hypothalamic structures in men most widely-cited as confirming innate brain differences between homosexuals and heterosexuals, as he himself initially argued. He later acknowledged: "It's important to stress what I didn't find. I did not prove that homosexuality is genetic, or find a genetic cause for being gay. I didn't show that gay men are born that way, the most common mistake people make in interpreting my work. Nor did I locate a gay center in the brain."
this is from a gay scientist who set out to prove the "born that way" theory and was honest enough to admit its not scientific. Not exactly a crackpot with hatred of homosexuals.

Title: Not the Same Coin

Three points:
1. You responded with a one line 'rant', so lecturing me on ranting is disingenuous. A one line dogmatic statement is not an argument. You also accused me of caps, when it was used highly selectively. Don't attempt to portray someone as an idiot and not receive the same treatment. Do unto others and all that jazz.
2. All people are animals with urges to control. I have no qualm with that.
3. Not all 'science' is the same. Scientists funded directly by groups with an agenda should always be ignored. Citing the 'scientific' findings of such groups as counter-claims to real science are disingenuous.
First point, if you support their right to do as they will, then we have no issue. That has to be said first. My 'ranting', as you put it, is reserved for those who cannot formulate sentences or arguments beyond dogmatic claims, which is what you countered with initially - a one line dogmatic rant. You clearly have demonstrated a 'higher level' of understanding, so I can engage on a higher level now. Usually, in this country, ignorant one line 'shouts' are the order of the day.
Second point, you said, "A predisposition to certain sexual behaviors does not make them an avoidable impulse; unless you would like to argue gays are animals incapable of controlling themselves." I gladly consider all humans to be part of the animal kingdom. All the evidence in the world (and on this island) definitely points to that being the only logical conclusion. So, yes, we are all animals with urges to control or contain. However, being gay, is not the same thing as 'having a bad temper' or 'having cancer'. That is sheer nonsense. It begins with the fallacy that being gay is some kind of 'condition' or 'disease'. This is a false assumption from the outset. The primary reason being that almost all of the higher mammals (apes, whales etc) express some limited degree of homosexuality and/or bisexuality. It is a common trait amongst species that have sex of pleasure - as opposed to merely reproductive purposes. Genetic variation in humans includes the fact that a small percentage are born attracted to the same sex or multiple sexes. If we accept the science on this, then we understand that it is NECESSARY in an enlightened society and a genuine democracy to extend the right of sexual choice to all people, so long as they do no direct harm to others or to minors. The principle can be stated simply: get the government, the police and the courts out of consenting adults bedrooms.
The third and final point has to do with science. Global warming skeptics use the same fallacious argument. They say the science is not conclusive. They then point to crackpot 'scientists' who have been paid to produce 'counter-factual' scientific reports designed to simply 'exist' in academia, so that the crackpots with their political agenda can point to the 'science' from these 'marketing scientists'. It is bologna. Real science is not just what is published, but what is considered accurate, current, reliable and dependable information by the MAJORITY of scientists in a given field. In real universities, not the tin-pot Christian research labs in the USA, there is absolutely no debate as to the validity of the claim that some humans are born homosexual. So, referencing bogus studies and attempting to bring the scientific consensus on the matter into question is disingenuous again.
Finally, people like me are never 'haters' or just 'of the same coin', because my starting point is the same starting point that defends your and my right to live the way we please. In other words, you start with the claim that what so and so is doing is wrong immoral etc. I start with the claim that what so and so is doing doesn't harm anyone other than themselves (potentially), but that is their free choice and grown adults should be free to do as they will so long as they aren't harming another person against their will. That is not the same coin at all and trying to say it is, is again, disingenuous.
We live in a democracy and a democracy is supposed to protect individual rights and freedoms against the will of the 'mob'. Gays are no exception. That you don't wish or want to acknowledge a more enlightened position, given that you can reason, is just sad and a product of a highly uneducated, superstitious and generally backwards culture. It is precisely that culture that needs to be enlightened, educated and uplifted so that they can learn to look at their own problems as what is important and stop being distracted by nonsense issues - by both the church and the state, who simply manipulate them for their own gain.
Again EDUCATION = FREEDOM, IGNORANCE = SLAVERY. Who's side are you on? Do you choose willful ignorance and burying your head in the sand or do you let the light of a thousand suns and the knowledge of the world flow through you, until you reach a higher plane of consciousness. That is the question before every Bahamian. If this country is going to get better, D- and the culture of celebrating 'stupidity' have to end. That means accepting that we, as a country, probably have a lot to learn and it may be beneficial to open our eyes and minds a bit more.

Title: Erasmus Fully =same coin

I find it amusing when people like you rail and attack other for their point of view, while at same time saying they want tolerance and the right to speak freely.
You assume things about people and make up facts to suit your agenda.
You are in fact the other side of the same coin of the people you seem to hate so much.
I merely question a part of your dogma and you go on a rant.
For the record human sexuailty is a soft science.
Unlike math for instance, you cannot say things are absolute laws.
You can post a list of scientist and studies that say being gay is not a choice,
I can post a list just as long that say it is a choice.
Please don't pretend that" All of the science points" to your point of view.
If you study the matter you will see science can make 2 points of interest.
1. There is most likely a genetic predisposition to being gay.
2. The environment in which one is raised can also predispose one to be gay.
This is where some people say " see its in our genes and our childhood we have no choice in the matter."
But this is an error, predisposition by genetics and environment does not make a behavior acceptable.
A predisposition to a violent temper does not grant someone the right to be violent.
A predisposition to cancer doesn't mean that one just accepts the cancer and dies.
A predisposition to certain sexual behaviors does not make them an avoidable impulse; unless you would like to argue gays are animals incapable of controlling themselves.
For the record I have gay friends and support their right to do what they please as consenting adults.

Title: homosexuality in the Bahamas

very nice piece, but personally, I'm sick of the homosexual agenda being forced down my throat! Homosexuality, in my opinion is a sexual choice...one can be attracted to their same sex, but the act of having sex with them is a choice! It's weird that any time a "white dude" speaks up against a black dude...hes suddenly a racist. Well the same holds true of homosexuality...I will speak up against it because I don't give a crap what is done in your bedroom...just please leave it there. I feel its wrong to discriminate against an openly gay person...but I also feel its wrong for gay people to want to make me feel like I must accept their sexual choices...by the way, I also feel it is horribly wrong that our society accepts heterosexual men sleeping with multiple females and vice versa, (sweethearting is just as bad as homosexuality). In closing, I say gays, heteros...leave your crap in the bedroom...its for you and our good Lord to deal with.

Title: Says who?

@Choice
Says who? You? The Bible? Says who? Your opinion? It is not a choice. If you ever grew up and knew a gay person, you would not say something so naive. For some, yes, I will concede it is a choice, but a very small percentage, less than 5 for sure. For the vast majority, they are born that way. All of the science points to that conclusion as well. So, again, taking the 'holier than thou' approach (with your slick little CAPS reference) is disingenuous. You provide no evidence nor do you feel you need any. Ignorance is a choice. You have made yours clear!

Title: Excellent article Taneka!

I was disgusted when I learned that people protested the last gay cruise and then I was ashamed when I watched Rosie O'Donnell's documentary about it. I'm still holding out hope that we've matured as a nation in the meantime and I won't have to be disappointed with my fellow Bahamians again.
I realize there is ignorance everywhere but, why is there so much of it here? It's ironic, sad and downright incomprehensible that while Tourism is our #1 industry we are hateful to our guests and take no pride in our surroundings, leaving garbage on every beach we have access to.
Why on earth do we throw away our own bread and butter like this?

Title: Correction

"We need some political, spiritual and intellectual majority in this country." This line should read, "We need some political, spiritual and intellectual maturity in this country."
Open your eyes and mind Bahamas. Read more than just your preacher says on a Sunday sermon. This is a big bad world and a very small little rock we are on. Don't let the ignorance of the outside become the rally cry from within. I find it deeply ironic that black Bahamians do not understand that their overly hyper version of Evangelical Christianity exists only in one other place in the world - the Southern United States. Ironic, because the only 'crazy' evangelicals in the world largely come from either the white descendants of former slave owners, who are now Sarah Palin loving rednecks and happily hate blacks, Jews and gays; or the descendants of their slaves who have adopted the religion of 'the Master' and incorporated it 10 times over as their own - while forgetting their roots entirely and having no interest in 'rediscovering' them. Instead, they join with the rednecks in hating Jews and gays, but somehow ignore that blacks is the only category not on that shared list. Bizarre in the extreme!
The lady was 100% correct to point out that both Civil Rights movements share a lot in common. Or do you simply want to ignore that MLK learned a lot of what helped him run a successful Civil Rights campaign from a gay man? Oh, that's right, revising and pretending that history didn't happen the way it did is what you people are all really good at! EDUACATION = FREEDOM! IGNORANCE = SLAVERY! Which side are you on?

Title: Nonsense

Sadly, the nonsense lies in your comment, not in the very well written article that precedes it. It is sad that you don't see the point of equating the two. It is because hatred crowds your vision. If you knew anything of Jesus love, which you describe so passionately, then you would know it is love built on forgiveness and understanding.
Homosexuality is NOT a choice. There may be a very, very small percentage of homosexuals who 'choose' that lifestyle, but the vast majority do not. Homosexuality exists in all of the 'higher' mammals. It is simply the full range and expression of the human genome and all the variations built therein. A small percentage of people are born gay or bisexual. You not wanting to accept this well established scientific fact is your own ignorance and that is a CHOICE.
In a democracy, all people are afforded rights. So long as the rights afforded to them do not infringe upon or inhibit the rights of another then the principle of democracy is to allow that right. Two consenting adults do not impede upon your rights to live as you please, so what is the problem? If you don't approve, don't live that way, but aside from that there is no reason to make noise or cause a scene - you don't have to go to their house and they won't come to yours!
We need some political, spiritual and intellectual majority in this country. Sick and tired of living with emotionally immature and frighteningly insecure 'Christians' who constantly want to tell people how to live while they womanize, cheat, sweetheart and talk a bunch of fool on the side. Those who play the 'holier than thou' card are more often and not just trying to make up for/hide their own shortcomings/insecurities/sins. GROW UP BAHAMAS!
I praise, wholeheartedly, the young lady who wrote this piece and the Tribune for publishing it. Please explain to these so called Christians that they are really Scribes and Pharisees of the Old Testament and know nothing of Jesus love.
He who is without sin may cast the first stone... Bahamians should learn that lesson well. Bunch of hypocrites we are!

Title: nonsense

This commentary is in short some of the most nonsensical rhetoric I have ever had the misfortune of reading. First, as the columnist posits, "As a descendant of persons who were subjected to this type of treatment, I find it a contradiction to be both black and homophobic," I find it hard to see why. Contrary to popular belief, homosexuality is a choice; to be black is not. The fact that you have taken something as beautiful as my blackness and reduced it and equated it to a lifestyle which is abhorrent, abominable and condemned by God is not only problematic, offensive and sinister, it is offensive. God has an obligation to remove from our lives whatever is not from him. Otherwise, he will give us the grace to sustain it. Not to make light of the homosexuals plight, but God is able to deliver him/her if he truly wants to be delivered. But it requires us first abstaining; abstaining from those acts, places and associations which foster this lifestyle. God would never give to an individual that which ultimately he will destroy one for. He is love.
