Anglican Diocese ordains its seventh female clergy member

LETHA Strachan will become the seventh woman to serve in the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands when she is ordained as a deacon next Tuesday, which coincides with the Feast of St Bartholomew the Apostle.

The ordination will take place at St Barnabas Anglican Church on Baillou Hill Road at 7pm.

The chief celebrant for this special occasion will be Reverend Laish Zane Boyd, Sr, Diocesan Bishop; and Canon Basil Tynes, Rector of St Barnabas will preach the sermon.

Born in Nassau to Philip and Jepena Strachan, Ms Strachan grew up in St Barnabas Church, New Providence.

She attended Stephen Dillet and C W Sawyer Primary Schools, and was graduated from St John's College, the College of the Bahamas and the College of St Benedict in Minnesota.

She is also a 2009 graduate of the University of the West Indies and Codington Theological College in Barbados.

Prior to following her vocation, Ms Strachan was employed with the Ministry of Education as a primary school teacher. She also worked at the Harbour Island All-Age School, Columbus Primary and Mable Walker Primary Schools.

She taught at the Bishop Eldon Primary School, Freeport, Grand Bahama for the academic year 2009/2010.

As a deacon, Ms Strachan will be assigned to the parishes in Grand Bahama under the supervision of Archdeacon Harry Bain of the Northern Bahamas.

The other female clergy in the Diocese are Rev Angela Palacious, hospital chaplain; Rev Beryl Higgs, retired; Rev Erma Ambrose rector at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Grand Bahama;

Rev Willish Johnson, rector of St John the Baptist with St Martin, Abaco; Rev Paulette Cartwright, assistant curate in St Andrew's Parish, Exuma, and Rev Marie Roach, assistant curate at Christ the King, Freeport.
