CUTLASS ATTACK: Romauld Ferreira

AN ATTEMPT was made on the life of attorney and host of Bahamas @ Sunrise Romauld Ferreira yesterday in a bizarre case that police suspect could be linked to a murder over the weekend.

According to police sources close to the matter, Mr Ferreira was accosted sometime around 8.30am when he arrived at his law chambers of Ferreira and Company on East Street north.

Ferreira, police claim, was walking in the parking lot when a man unknown to him approached him asking if he would like to purchase some breadfruit. Answering in the negative, Ferreira reportedly turned to walk away from the man, who then charged at him with a cutlass.

Receiving minor lacerations to his left ear and neck, the police claim Ferreira was able to escape from his assailant with non-life threatening injuries. He was treated in hospital.

It is said that when Ferreira ran from his assailant, he dropped his cell phone. The "breadfruit man" did not stop to pick it up, leading to the belief that robbery was not the motive.

Up until press time last night, Ferreira was said to be compiling a composite sketch with police so that an image of his assailant could be widely disseminated by the police and local media.

Ferreira was expected to appear in the Supreme Court yesterday for the start of the attempted armed robbery trial of Ryan Omar Butler and the now-deceased Raymond Bastian.

Bastian was gunned down on Saturday night on Abundant Life Road in what police have described as a "drive-by shooting."

Yesterday, the jurors in the trial were informed that Ferreira was "ill" and that trial was expected to reconvene today.

Ferreira is representing Butler in today's proceedings.

Police investigations into this matter are continuing.
