TWO police officers are under investigation after a woman claimed they extorted money from her, according to unofficial reports.
When asked about the reports, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hulan Hanna confirmed that two officers from the mobile division are subjects of an investigation. However, he declined to confirm or reject the details of the allegations.
"I can confirm that there is an investigation going on. I am not prepared to say anything more," said Mr Hanna.
According to Tribune sources, the woman claims she was driving on Old Trail Road when she was stopped and searched by two police officers.
They reportedly arrested her and confiscated a computer which they said could be used in the "numbers" business. On the way to the station, it is claimed, they informed the woman that she could buy her release for $200.
The woman claims she paid the officers and was released. However, she immediately reported the matter to police.
It was alleged that a Mobile Patrol Unit intercepted the officers and conducted a search. Sources claim the search officers found a number of 9mm bullets and 7.62 (assault rifle) bullets, as well as an imitation 9mm pistol and two bags of marijuana.
The officers in question were off yesterday, according to an officer at their station.
Assistant Superintendent Ken Strachan, officer in charge of the Mobile Division, said that as far as he is aware, the officers alleged to be involved in the incident are "working officers."
He referred all further comment to Mr Hanna.

Title: Warning.....
I totally agree with 'Mark My Words'. We Bahamians take everyhing for granted. If we don't watch out, we will be like all the other high crime infested nations.....The embargo on Cuba won't last forever.

Title: Just the normal expected from the police
This is nothing new, even the police in the magistrate court ask for money to drop charges when you come out of court. It happened to us. Most of the charges are bogus but this is their way of extorting money from you. No person wants their family harassed continually by them so you pay, and pay, and pay some more. What a shame that the young people today can't even trust the ones who are supposed to uphold the law, they are the biggest crooks around.

Title: Whats New??
I say again....some of the biggest crooks in the Country are on the Police, immigration & Defense forces. Extortion of illegal’s by Police and Immigration is common and well known. Haitians are used to the “Friday shack down" by crooked Police... How else can illegal Haitians, Jamaicans and others walk around freely?

Title: well done
robbing a female of her computer, taking $200 for her release, getting caught with drugs and bullets make this a well done job for the brave sisteren. she would make a good counselor to the commissioner of police as she knows what is to be done. well done gal sounds like crime fighting need to be in the hand of any woman who doesn't take any mess. Remember yinna mama never messed around when the time came. So applauds for this brave citizen who now deserves a rank on the force.

Title: If You Do Not
Your country is going into the toilet, if you do not clean up the corruption, you will end up on the “Warning List” for vacationers. Cuba is looking better and better every day.
