THE Bahamas Humane Society has issued a public warning following a spike in the number of dogs suffering from heat stroke.
Over the past several weeks, Humane Society staff have seen a number of dogs brought in to the BHS shelter with a dangerously heightened body temperature, a condition refereed to as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
The symptoms include:
• excessive or exaggerated painting
• lethargy
• weakness
• drooling excessively
• high fever
• dark red gums
• rapid heartbeat
• unresponsiveness to commands and surroundings
• vomiting
• collapse
• staring/anxious expression
• very warm/dry skin
BHA staff said if you notice these symptoms, cool the dog down in a tub (using cool not cold water) and call your vet immediately.
