AFTER a split in their first two games of the FIBA Centrobasket U15 Championship for Men, the Bahamas now stands in second position headed into the final game of opening round pool play today.
The Bahamas opened with a 73-63 win over the host team El Salvador, and followed with a tough 74-68 loss to Mexico last night.
In game one against El Salvador, Daejour Adderley led three players in double figures as the Bahamas began the tournament on a high note. He finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and shot 33 per cent from beyond the arch.
Livingston Bromwell also added a double double with 16 points and 16 rebounds while Shemar Burrows finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Sebastian Gray was limited to just 15 minutes due to foul trouble, but still added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Bahamas dominated the boards, 59-31, against a short handed El Salvador team that went just six players deep into its bench.
Leonardo Hernandez Gamero led El Salvador with 28 points and nine rebounds, while Johnathan Cruz Beltran finished with 16 points.
The Bahamas took a 20-14 lead after the opening quarter and extended to a 37-26 lead at the half.
The Bahamas was able to overcome deep foul trouble, with three players fouling out and El Salvador taking 48 free throws, although they failed to capitalise and converted just 54 per cent.
The Bahamas is grouped in Pool B with the Cayman Islands, Mexico and El Salvador.
Pool A includes Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Barbados and Guatemala.
After Mexico dismantled the Cayman Islands on day one, 127-27, the matchup against the Bahamas was expected to be the highlight of the schedule on day two.
Gray was the lone member of Team Bahamas to reach double figures against Mexico with 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack.
Bromwell, Adderley, Burrows and Travis Barnett all finished with eight points apiece.
Oscar Ibarra led Mexico with 30 points, seven rebounds and nine steals.
Thirty-six turnovers and converting just 5-12 from the charity stripe proved to be the key factors in the Bahamas falling just short in their comeback attempt.
The Bahamas will face the Cayman Islands today while Mexico closes out pool play against El Salvador.
The playoff round begins August 28.
