THE Catholic Primary School concluded its two-day track and field championships at Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium Friday with St Cecilia's Strikers and St Francis/Joseph Shockers repeating as champions in their respective divisions for the fifth consecutive year.
While the Strikers took home another title in the junior division, the Shockers emerged once again as the champions of the primary division.
"The younger kids tend to listen more," said St Francis/Joseph's coach Davon Johnson. "Our junior athletes always seem to be our problem."
Johnson said he was pleased with his team's performance, considering that they came into the final day trailing in second place by about eight points. "We came around in our relays," he said.
As for the Strikers, coach Leo Delaney said he was thrilled that they did it again. "God has been good to us," he said. "It was a team effort. We didn't have a dominating area. We performed very well over all. It was a team effort. I want to thank all of my assistant coaches. I know it was going to be close. I knew St Francis/Joseph was coming. They worked hard. I'm just happy that we pulled it off."
Catholic Diocesan Primary Schools sports coordinator Vanta Culmer said the meet proved to be an exciting one from start to finish. The first day on Thursday was designed for the field events, while the track events were held on day two on Friday.
"The schools have been very competitive. The athletes have been very competitive," she said. "Still room for more training, otherwise, there's still more room for improvement."
Culmer said both St Francis/Joseph and St Cecilia's had a lot of athletes returning so she expected that the competition would have been a close one again this year. She noted that the entire sporting season was very competitive and hopefully next year, they intend to include a soccer tournament for boys and girls and possibly baseball for boys and softball for girls.
All six Catholic primary schools participated in the track and field championships, including Our Lady's Blue Flames, St Bede's Crushers, Xavier's Giants and St Thomas More Sparks.
