HUMILITY is an essential attitude that must be exhibited by all Christians. According to Proverbs 27:2, humility is a virtue Christians should take pride in. They should never boast about themselves or their good works.
The scripture states: "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips."
It is this simple principle many Christians forget, Bishop Rudolph Mckinney, at Church of God of Prophecy said. He said when people boast, they make themselves appear independent of God which is something that can never happen.
"When we boast about ourselves and our work, it is evidence that pride exists. And pride is something that the lord dislikes. As Christians we should do our best to be humble," he said.
If a Christian does boast, they should boast about the Lord, his magnificent works, or how they came to know him as outlined by the apostle Paul, said Bishop McKinney.
"There are a quite a number of Christians who I know who do that. This does not make them bad or sinful its just that they do not know any better. But our boasts should be in the Lord," Bishop McKinney said.
When a person brags it robs God of the glory he deserves. Boasting takes people away from God. It also gives a false sense that the person is solely responsible for their success and achievements, Cory Deleveaux, a Catholic adherent told Tribune Religion.
"There is nothing wrong with being successful and saying what you have achieved. But the moment you begin to think that you made everything happen the way it did you are deluded."
"We must all boast in the lord. God works through human agents to get his work accomplished, he really does not have to but he does. I do not know why people seem to think they wake themselves up in the morning or they are responsible for their bills being paid. At the end of the day all of the successes of man is traced to one being and that's God," he said.
Christians are disciples of Jesus and reflect his nature. If they are not humble and demonstrate arrogance, Jesus appears to the be the same way to the world, said Anita Miller, an Adventist.
"They must be mindful of the way they carry themselves. If the world sees Christians being arrogant or conceited they will think God is the same way," she said.
When Jesus lived on the earth, Ms Miller said he never took credit for the miracles he did.
"He attributed everything to God. So how then can man, who is capable of nothing, be so arrogant and think he is responsible for everything he has done. It is not man. It is God. And that is something the bible speaks against," she said.
Daniel Coakley, Presbyterian follower, said the only pride that is acceptable, is pride in God.
"Anyone who boasts about themselves are a turn off to others. You must take a godly pride in the lord, his character, and his acts. After all he is responsible for everything," he said.
