AFTER two rounds at the top amateur golfing event in the region, Team Bahamas finds itself with much ground to cover if they hope to contend for the overall title.
The Bahamas is ranked ninth overall in the title race for the Arthur Zidie trophy at the 57th Annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship Tournament hosted by the Virgin Islands Golf Federation at the Mahogany Run Golf Course in St Thomas.
The Bahamas’ 14 member team has totalled 17 points thus far. The team is made up of the following players in their respective divisions.
Hoerman Cup - Thomas Bethel, Devaughn Robinson, Benjamin Davis, Lucas Echverri and Asif Robinson
Mid-Amateurs - Peter McIntosh and John McIntosh
Seniors - Paul Bowe and George Swann
Super Seniors - Oswald Moore and Vernon Wells with Reserve - Fred Wright
In the Hoerman Cup, the Bahamas is currently in seventh with a combined total score of 623.
In round one, Lucas Echverri shot 83 and followed with 83, Thomas Bethel shot 74 and 77, Benjamin Davis shot 75 and 70, Asif Robinson shot 88 and 84 while Devaughn Robinson shot 85 and 76.
Davis is fourth overall among the individual stroke play results with a score of 145, just two shots behind the leader Lino Guerrero.
Bethel is currently ranked 15th at 151.
In the competition for the George Teale Memorial trophy, the Bahamas is in eighth with a total score of 355.
Inicia Rolle totalled 85 and 97, Asiyah Robinson scored 86 and 97 while Taneka Sandiford scored 92 and 87.
Rolle is the top performer for the Bahamas at 18th overall individually with a score of 182.
More than 125 of the top golfers in the Caribbean are competing in the tournament which is hosted in a different Caribbean country each year, and for the first time in the USVI.
Participating countries include the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, and OECS.
The OECS team is represented by players from Eastern Caribbean countries, including Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Fourteen players from the US Virgin Islands will also participate in the tournament. Each player is top ranked in his or her country.
During the four-day tournament, players will compete in five different divisions, including The Hoerman Cup which features teams of five male golfers in individual stroke play.
The Francis and Steele-Perkins Cup features two teams of golfers aged 50 and above in four ball stroke play.
The Higgs and Higgs Trophy includes teams of two golfers aged 60 and above in four ball stroke play.
The George Teale Cup includes teams of three female golfers in individual stroke play.
The Ramon Baez Trophy includes two teams of golfers ages 35 and above in four ball stroke play and The Arthur Ziadie Trophy will be awarded to the country that has performed the best in the overall championships.
The BGF selected a number of team members just off the heels of competing at the junior level in the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championshps.
Echeverri, Asif Robinson, Inecia Rolle and Asiyah Robinson are all competing at the senior level for the first time.
Swann and Bowe are the defending champions in the the Francis and Steele Perkins Cup division and are once again expected to contend when they tee off later this week.
