IT WAS a heartbreaking finish for the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s under-17 men’s team at last week’s Centrobasket Championships. Now their female counterparts hope to qualify at the same level when they tip off regional competition in less than a week.
The women’s under-17 girls are scheduled to depart for the Centrobasket Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador, on August 27.
Varel Clarke-Davis is the team’s head coach and her staff includes Charlene Smith, Deven Johnson and Stuarvette Cleare.
Travelling with the team will also be medical trainer Eugena Patton and referee Terezz Conliffe. Serena Brown and Shalonda Neely will serve as co-captains for the team.
Other roster members include Isis Wilson, Antenique Young, Alisha Thompson, Valerie Nesbitt, Tahjnee Thurston, Savanna Symonette, Lilnique Murphy, Kyla Higgs, Lashae Rolle, Annya Moss and Faith Curry.
The draw was held last week and the Bahamas was placed in Group B alongside Mexico, USVI and the hosts.
Group A includes Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Honduras.
The participating teams were divided into two groups that will play a first phase round-robin within the group. The top two teams from each group qualify for the semifinal where the top team of Group A will play the runner- up of Group B and vice versa. The semifinal winners will advance to the final.
The Bahamas is slated to open competition in the feature game against El Salvador at 6pm local time on August 28. The following day, Team Bahamas is set to face Mexico at 4pm and will close out the preliminary round the following day against the USVI at 2pm.
Eight members of the team were also members of the 2012 Centrobasket Under-15 Championship for Women, hosted in Mexico. Nesbitt, Brown, Neely, Wilson, Young, Thompson, Rolle and Moss were all members of the team who finished in fourth place.
The Bahamas last participated in the Women’s U-17 Centrobasket in 2011 when they finished in fourth place. They also finished sixth in 2009.
