ANDREW Cole Maura, Grade 7 student at Lyford Cay International School, won the Boys 12s Singles division at the Plantation Holiday Super Series junior tennis tournament held at the Frank Veltri Tennis Complex in Plantation, FL.
The tournament, held January 26-28, was a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Level 6 event, drawing the top players in the 10s, 12s and 14s age groups.
In the draw of 32, Cole defeated five opponents including the number one seeded player, Gabriel Bonassi of Doral, FL (7-5); (6-4) to bring home the trophy.
A ‘lefty’ who has been playing in Nassau since age four, Cole also competed in the Boys 14s Doubles division alongside friend and fellow Bahamian, Oneal Mortimer.
They prevailed in the first round, (8-6) over Christopher Kotite and Lucas Larese DeSanto. However, the Bahamian duo fell to the top seeds Roger Lyn and Omar Zarif in the second round.
Cole will continue training and competing in tournaments both home and abroad, building on this important win as he moves up to the 14s age group.
