DR Daniel Johnson, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture, addressed members of the Rotary at the Nassau Yacht Club yesterday, listing the improvements being made in his ministry and revealing plans to move into the business side of sports.
Speaking of his hopes for the National Youth Sports Authority, and reminiscing on his time as an athlete in college, Dr Johnson regaled members with his retelling of the men’s 4x400m Olympic relay – an event he called the “best tactical race ever ran.”
Also addressing the uproar over renaming the Paradise Island Bridge in honour of Academy Award-winning actor Sir Sidney Poitier, Dr Johnson said people missed the point of the entire exercise.
He said that the bridge itself represents a metaphor of “where we have come from in the past and how far we have come to this point in the present, and how excited we are to where we will go in the near future.”
“So this bridge is a past, present, future phenomenon.
“That’s it. Nothing about Sir Sidney Poitier and all the things he did, going to the top of his game. Notwithstanding that, to show everyone else and to share a moment that is absolutely timeless,” he said.
Dr Johnson said he was honoured to walk Sir Sidney back to his hotel room following the renaming ceremony and the actor paused at his room door, saying: ‘Wow, that was the greatest honour I have ever received, ever.’
“Because it was done by his own people,” Dr Johnson said.
