SALEM Union Baptist carted off the top prize in the Baptist Sports Council’s 2013 Co-Ed Volleyball Classic at the DW Davis Gymnasium on Saturday.
In the best-of-three set final, Salem prevailed with a sweep of 25-21 and 25-23 over St Paul’s Baptist. Kirkwood Jr was named the most valuable player.
Other members of Salem’s team, coached by Javon Saunders, were Je’Nae Saunders, Shanafi Hepburn, Rajahl Moxey, Raechel Knowles, Brittany Deveaux, Joanette Curits and Zarya Seymour.
St Paul’s, coached by Olympia Morris, comprised of Kelly Smith, Lashunda Bethel, Nicola Major, Tara Rolle, Daria Cambridge, Melinda Bastian, Rhondel Cooper, Justin Smith, Branden Bethel, Avery Moxey, Eugene Stuart, Terivis Campbell, Antosh Misiewizz, Antonio Jennings and Monika Cunningham.
Taking third place was Macedonia, coached by Lamont Nixon. Their players were Dinero Rahming, Dinaire Pickstock, Terrel Stubbs, Adrian Adderley, Annie Moultrie, Brittany Stubbs and Rasheed Sadler.
Salem went through the round robin with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record after beating Ebenezer Baptist 15-3, 15-7, St. Paul’s 15-7, 15-10 and Macedonia 15-2 and 15-10. As a result of their performance, Salem was awarded a bye into the final.
St Paul’s played Macedonia in the sudden death playoff, winning 15-8 and 15-10 to secure their berth into the final.
In another match played during the tournament, Macedonia beat Ebenezer 15-11, 13-15.
The BSC will now prepare for its 2013 Cycling Classic at the National One-Mile Cycling Track 10am Saturday.
