THE Governor General of Canada has congratulated The Bahamas on its 40th Anniversary of Independence.
In a letter to Governor General Arthur Foulkes, the Canadian Governor General David Johnston said: “On behalf of all Canadians, it is my pleasure to extend greetings and congratulations to you and to the people of the Bahamas on the occasion of your country’s 40th Independence Day.”
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Mr Johnston said: “The long-standing and friendly relations that we enjoy are based on a shared Commonwealth heritage and strong people-to-people ties.
“Canada values working with The Bahamas on matters of mutual interest and looks forward to ongoing constructive collaboration in the multilateral organisations in which we are members.”
The government and people of Canada were represented at the anniversary festivities in Nassau by Bob Dechert, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was accompanied by Canadian High Commissioner Robert Ready.
In his message celebrating the 40th anniversary, Pastor Mario, of the Bahamas Harvest Church, said it was imperative to continue to raise the moral conscience of the nation and to do that which is right in the eyes of God.
On Wednesday, a float parade travelled around New Providence and later an Independence State Reception was held at Government House.
Hundreds of people thronged the lower gardens for the reception, which included a cake cutting ceremony.
