Greek Festival is launchpad for airborne media firm

A NEW company is taking the skies by storm, using radio controlled aerial platforms to take photos and capture video footage from previously unobtainable vantage points.

Sky High Media is a local photography/cinematography company that uses multi-rotor devices of various sizes that can fly closer to structures and crowds than helicopters while causing little disturbance in the surrounding area.

The only disturbance you may see, the company says, “is the crowd looking up at our platforms as they coast by effortlessly in the air”.

The devices – essentially remote-controlled multi-rotor helicopters equipped with a gyro stabilised camera gimble – are also able to fly indoors in larger venues.

They can also conduct uninterrupted fly-throughs of locations that would be extremely difficult to navigate with a boom camera or slide, according to partners George Mosko and Lance Knowles.

“I’ve always been into cameras, ever since I was young. As technology progressed, the cameras got smaller and the remote controlled toys got bigger – it got to the point that they were no longer toys.

“The minute I realised I could fly my camera through the air on one of these platforms, I was hooked. From aerial surveying of lots, to just taking a picture of a sunset from the backyard, it’s just more fun to do it this way, not to mention it’s also a great conversation starter.”

Mr Knowles said: “I’ve always been captivated by the beauty of our islands, especially from an aerial perspective. Photography was another passion, but with a market that’s overcrowded, the trick was to find a different approach. We see ourselves as game changers – thinking way outside the box and producing visual images that will arrest the audience.”
