THE Chinese Embassy in The Bahamas writes about the recent deadly earthquake which hit Lushan, Sichuan Province, China.
On Saturday, April 20, 2013, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake suddenly hit Lushan, Sichuan Province, China, leaving 193 dead, 25 missing and 12,211 injured.
A total of 3,244 aftershocks of the quake have been recorded and at least 1.99 million people in Sichuan were impacted.
The Chinese central as well as local governments attached greatest importance to the rescue work.
Immediately after the earthquake, rescue operations started and Chinese leaders called for national unity and courage to fight against an earthquake that jolted southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang went to the quake-hit area to direct the rescue work.
A total of 19,000 soldiers and officers from China’s military and armed police forces were sent to quake-hit areas in Sichuan, rushing to find survivors while helping resettle 24,000 locals.
The rescue troops spared no efforts in the search and rescue of survivors in the debris.
As of last Tuesday, they have already treated 10,579 injured and transferred some 1,355 tonnes of relief materials.
Meanwhile, the troops are exhausting all means to send relief materials to affected areas as soon as possible as many regions still lack water, food, tents and medicine.
In the wake of the 7.0-magnitude quake, a lot of friendly countries and people, including some Caribbean countries and international organisations, have sent condolences and offered various kinds of assistance to China, demonstrating their friendly feelings toward the Chinese people.
The Chinese government and people are grateful for that and have expressed their sincere gratitude by various means and through different channels.
For the Chinese nation, as underlined in a statement issued after the conference from the top leadership last Tuesday,
“Calamities always help to make a nation stronger. The more difficult situations we face, the more we need to boost the national cohesiveness and the courage to face up to hardships and dangers. As long as we are prepared and united, we will be fully capable to deal with all complex situations and overcome every potential difficulty.”
