ROOTS and Culture Thursdays is not only an event, it is a lifestyle experience for those looking for a fun, safe and conscious evening, according to House of Rastafari organiser and musician Jah Doctrine. Held for the first time last Thursday at Club Nubian in Park Forest Court, Carmichael Road, Jah Doctrine said up to 60 people turned out to support.
“We hoped to fill the venue to capacity, but are grateful for the interest shown thus far. With such a strong response from the community it will most definitely be growing,” said Jah Doctrine
He said the dance party themed event features ital food and drinks, roots wine, and cultured music from around the world, from old school to new.
As the event goes on, Jah Doctrine said attendees can look forward to special guest appearances and performances by Bahamian artists and deejays. The music will be provided by DJ Sheldon Vybes.
“I am a role player among many others who helped to plan and market these events, and further the organisation’s objectives,” he said.
“We wanted to bring a more conscious energy to the local night scene. After a long week’s work, and in the face of so much stress, confusion, crime and violence, our communities need relaxation and healing. The right social environment can help to strengthen our relationship with one another as we prepare for the work. The event provides an option for the individual who wishes to experience great music, healthy and scrumptious food in a mature, fun and safe environment,” said Jah Doctrine.
With this event, Jah Doctrine said the House of Rastafari’s committee sought to address issues pertaining to Rastafari needs and goals, as it relates to solidarity and collective security.
“This also came about out of the need to have the Bahamian population at large have a deeper understanding of who we are and what we represent. It is also felt that through this medium, the Rastafari community can better achieve its goals of the development and advancement of its people; African people specifically and the world generally,” said Jah Doctrine.
Moreover, he said the House of Rastafari is an amalgamation of organisations that include the African Sisters for All Women, The King of Kings Missionary, Ethiopian Africa Black International Congress, the Hebrew, Non-Aligned and Rastafari Development Union.
The event will continue every Thursday at 8 pm. Jah Doctrine said it is scheduled to run indefinitely.
