The Airport Gateway Project is 99 per cent complete, the Minister of Works said yesterday, with more than $69 million of its $71 million budget having been spent to date.
Speaking on the project’s progress in Parliament yesterday, Mr Davis said: “The project was budgeted for $71.6 million. The expenditure to date has been $69.45 million, which leaves $2.15 million remaining.
“ Construction started in May 2011, with a scheduled completion date of August 2013. It is now substantially complete with no further delay anticipated except for unforeseen circumstances, such as adverse weather conditions, whose occurrence would not be strange, particularly since we are still in the hurricane season. Our engineers describe the work as 99 per cent complete. Some landscaping and other minor works remain to be completed.”
Speaking on the New Providence Infrastructure Improvement Programme, Mr Davis told Parliament that the Government assumed control and management of all road corridors included in the project, entering into a one-year process of supervision by the Government’s consulting engineers and the Ministry’s engineering staff to confirm that the contracted quality was in place.
“That year comes to an end in four months at January 31, 2014. We continue to monitor the works and to arrange any necessary repair,” Mr Davis said.
“The New Providence Infrastructure Programme has cost $198.6 million, when one takes out the component costs related to the development of the Big Pond area; institutional strengthening within the Ministry of Works and the Department of Public Works; and a comprehensive review of the Road Traffic Act which, together, accounts for another $7 million for a total of $205.6 million,” said Mr Davis.
The project was undertaken by the Argentinian-based firm, Jose Cartellone Construcciones Civiles (JCCC).
