“THE CINEMAS”, a new movie review show, aims to reach a wider audience when it is aired on local television starting next week.
The show was launched last month by Bahamian filmmaker Travolta Cooper in an effort to create a more vibrant local movie community.
“The Cinemas” will air on April 10 at 8pm on Cable 12.
Mr Cooper, along with special guests, are shining a spotlight on the latest movie releases and happenings in the world of cinema.
In addition to being aired on television, the episodes are also available for viewing on the YTV channel on YouTube.
“The Cinemas” is ten-minute long web show. The first half is called “Insta-Cinema”. This particular segment features quick reviews of movies, Mr Cooper said.
Viewers are asked to Instagram or tweet their feedback in hopes of having their comments featured on the next show or even winning the chance to make an appearance themselves.
There is also a “Coke and a Movie” segment, sponsored by Coco Cola, which is designed to give people free tickets for the movies, Mr Cooper said.
The final segment is “Dining and a Movie”, sponsored Outback Steakhouse, which highlights a very special movie, “one that is worth having dinner or coffee over”,” he said.
Mr Cooper told Tribune Arts and Entertainment that when “The Cinemas” airs on television it will be a half hour long as opposed to the 10-15 minute version for the web. The web version of the show will continue as well.
“The goal for most web shows is to make it to television – especially in the US market. The goal is to get enough hits. But beyond that, most web show creators hope to get distribution on television. In this case, I suppose we did. With Cable Bahamas as a stepping stone, we also plan to branch out in the greater Caribbean,” he said.
“It’s been going good for what it is. We have done little to no advertising, but we’ve gathered a faithful audience. We have done four episodes. Five movies per episode. But beyond just movie reviews, the show wants to place a greater spotlight on filmmaking and filmmakers in the Caribbean,” he said.
Local personalities that have been featured on the show since its launch include Teej Grant, Leslie Tynes (Lezboogie of 100 Jamz), Craig Woods, Lavado Stubbs, Roeun Robinson, Dr Toni Francis, Travis Cartwright, Kristofa Heastie and Leah Eneas.
“All of our guests are invited and encouraged to come back. They are now cast, so to speak, once they have appeared on the show. We hope to have them all make recurring appearances on the show, because the show hopes to be a launchpad, not so much for personalities, but for a movie community in the Bahamas and the Caribbean,” he said.
Mr Cooper said there will also be opportunities for viewers to come on the show to express their views.
He has also collaborated with Bahamslocal.com and Bahamasweekly.com to put the show on their pages.
