Four teams clinch berths in best-of-3 divisional finals

THE Baptist Sports Council’s 2014 Basketball Classic is now down to the final four teams in the men’s division. Still alive at the completion of the best-of-three first round playoffs are respective pennant winners Macedonia and Men of Vision, along with the Hope Centre and the Eagles Nest.

The four teams clinched their berths in the best-of-three divisional finals that are scheduled to start tonight at the DW Davis Gymnasium. The two winners will go on to play for the league championship title next week.

Men of Vision, winners of the men’s Vice President pennant, was the first team to secure their berth, completing a two-game sweep over BIBA on Thursday night. The other three teams had to go to the third and deciding game on Tuesday night.

Men of Vision will now prepare for second place Eagles Nest, who held off Evangelistic Centre 50-44 in their deciding game. Able Joseph scored 11 points in the win, while Tyrone Sands had a game high 13 in the loss.

On the other side of the coin, men’s President pennant winners Macedonia had to go to an extra period before prevailing with a 53-49 overtime victory. The game was tied 38-38 at the end of regulation as Patrick Brice scored six of his eight points. Delano Knowles led the winners with 11 points and Patrick Leador had a game high 14 in the loss.

Macedonia will play Hope Centre, who clinched their semifinal berth with a 43-41 decision over the Church of the Nazarene. Cedric Sweeting had a game high 14 points in the win and Perry Lubin had 13 in the loss.
