A 30-year-old man was charged with murder in Magistrate’s Court and remanded to prison yesterday.

Terez Bethel, a South Beach resident, was not required to enter a plea before Magistrate Andrew Forbes for his alleged involvement in the death of Andrew Wood.

According to reports, Mr Wood was shot and killed on May 23 after apparently walking in on an attempted armed robbery. He was shot in the chest while in a convenience store on Lightbourn Street off Farrington Road and pronounced dead at the scene.

Before Magistrate Forbes yesterday, Bethel said he was innocent and had already participated in an identification parade.

He added that he was beaten by police and denied an opportunity to contact a lawyer.

Magistrate Forbes advised officers to ensure that Bethel received medical attention before he was sent to prison and that he was allowed to contact legal representation.

Magistrate Forbes told Bethel that he would have an opportunity to defend himself against accusations at his trial.

Bethel is expected to reappear in Magistrates Court no 9 on August 12 for the case to be forwarded to the Supreme Court.
