METEOROLOGISTS are monitoring a low pressure system heading for the Bahamas that is expected to develop into a tropical storm or depression.

The system is currently around Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, according to meteorologist Geoffrey Greene.

While it is neither a tropical storm nor depression at this point,  it will enter conditions favourable to its development into a stronger system as it enters Bahamian waters.

It has a 60 per cent chance of developing into a stronger system within the next 48 hours and 80 per cent chance of developing into a tropical storm or depression within the next five days.

Mr Greene said the system is expected to bring thunderstorms and localised flooding with gusty conditions of between 30 to 40 knots.
