Post office

EDITOR, The Tribune.

While visiting our dysfunctional and decrepit post office today, I took note of a large black wreath on the front doors. This dreary cavern of a building has been in a mouldering and moribund state for so long I suppose someone concluded that it had finally expired.

It is a shame that the twenty million dollars being squandered on a lavish and unnecessary building to house the miniscule Ministry of National Security isn’t being put to better use, a new and functional post office for example, but then our political masters have ever been penny wise and pound foolish.

They will spend the 20 million dollars on the new building that in 20 years or less will be just as dirty and decrepit as the post office as we all know, nobody maintains government buildings much less cleans them. You think any politician would treat their own home in the manner they let our public buildings be abused? It is about respect for and pride in public buildings, there is none!

Govt has the same mentality as the people. They are not at fault. New buildings are great - just like newborn babies. But there is no money in the budget for maintenance - just like there is no money from the Church to buy proper food (I don't mean Ramen Noodles) for all the babies that they force mothers to bring to life.

In that same 20 years you mention above, many of those new babies (just like new buildings) are broken down, unemployed, and some are even in jail due to lack of opportunities.

In the Bahamas we "thank God for life" - but we don't care too much about the quality of that life.

This same mentality is applied by our leaders to new buildings. Shiny when first born.

At least if we had a new building we might expect to get 15 - 20 years of service out of it instead of continuing to try and prod new life into the corpse we have.
