AFTER postponing the sailing competition because of the inclement weather in Cat Island earlier this month, Cat Island Sailing Club president Pat Strachan said they will now put the finishing touches on the 2014 Cat Island Regatta in Montagu Bay this weekend.

The regatta was over the August Monday weekend of August 1-5, but the weather was not cooperative and they only managed to get in two races. Strachan said they had a total of eight races, which they intend to stage starting 9am Saturday and complete on Sunday.

“Due to the inclement weather, we were unable to complete all of the races,” Strachan said.

“We know it’s going to be kind of tough, but we have to get the races. If we had gotten the A class races in, we could have called it a regatta, but the weather only allowed us to complete two.”

The boats entered in the A class are Who Dat, Red Stripe, Southern Cross and Ed Sky. The B class comprises of the Cobra, Eudeva, Passion, Ants Nest and the Susan Chase. And in the C class, the boats are Lady Margaret, Irene Good Night, Miss Kitty, Whitty K and the Dream Girl.

While the racing had to be postponed, Strachan said the renovation on the new sailing club, including the male and female bathrooms, the installation of the airconditioning, chagning of the windows, closing up the ceiling and painting the interior and exterior, was completed in time for the regatta and was used for the off-shore activities.

“We had a large crowd and the concerts were excellent,” said Strachan of performers like Veronica Bishop, Geno D, D Mack and Cupid, along with the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band, who were also on hand to provide the entertainment.

“With all of the races to be completed, we are looking forward to an exciting weekend of sloop sailing and we want to invite all Cat Islanders and our friends of Cat Island and the sailing sloop fans to come out and support this event.”
