Christmas lunch for veterans

VETERANS of the Nassau Branch of the British Legion recently enjoyed a Christmas luncheon in St Agnes Church Hall, where they were presented with Super Value food certificates donated by members of the Royal Society of St George.

A cheque for $5,000, the proceeds of the annual poppy sales in Nassau and Marsh Harbour, Abaco, was presented to the Chairman, Cephas Ferguson and Adina Munroe, Director of the Legion, to go towards the veterans’ pensions.

The meeting with the veterans each December is a tradition going back 15 years and is eagerly awaited and enjoyed, putting everyone in a festive mood and reminding all of the true meaning of Christmas.

It is also an opportunity for them to recount tales of their military past.

Milton Toppin showed a photograph taken when he was 18 on joining the Royal Air Force in Nassau. He said most of the veterans were in the same squadron and stationed at Oakes Field.
