Cuba move and its effect of the Bahamas

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Today’s totally unexpected statement by President Obama announcing major relaxation of restrictions on US contacts with Cuba, and actual opening of an embassy there, has profound significance for The Bahamas.

First, it shows a president who is not afraid to make an abrupt decision that infuriates a prominent power bloc – the Florida Cuban-American politicians – while our own leaders waffle endlessly before making a move that might offend some faction of our populace.

Second, it brings home the competitive threat that we will soon face from that large island of hard-working, well-educated people.

While not amounting to a total lifting of the trade embargo, the financial features of the new regime allowing foreign currency movements with US banks will soon encourage new tourist developments and pleasure travel.

At long last, our long stalled electric power reform and revitalisation of downtown Nassau must be given a jump-start if we are to meet the competition.

The Bahamas is also now in a weaker bargaining position with the Chinese. I fear that the Chinese will now drop us as perhaps the most important investment target in the region and now focus their efforts and money on Cuba. Why would the Chinese continue their down town revitalisation plan when there is much more bang for the buck in Cuba?

Now our Tribal politics, corruption, and under education are really going to kick us in the teeth. The same old, same old can no longer work or even tread water. Time to grow up and wake up Bahamas! Cuba is coming to eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner.
