AS the 2014 E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival completes its first week, parents on the island of New Providence applauded the festival and the artistic opportunities it affords their children.
Ms Dorcas Cox, mother of 13-year-old David Allens, said that she felt very proud of her son performing again in the Festival and representing his school, Queen’s College.
“It is always wonderful to see him perform,” she said. “It is always good to see the hours of practice, looking in terms of how it comes out at the end of the day, the end results.”
“I think that he works very hard and I am excited about his future,” Ms Cox said.
David’s grandmother, former Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Ms Ena-Mae Cox, said it is such a great feeling seeing him growing as a performer.
“He has really been able to handle himself and God is good to him,” his grandmother said. “He works hard, he practices and he gets tutored. I am always proud of him.”
Mr Lynden Maycock said he was very proud of his eight-year old son Lyle’s performance.
“I was very proud of him; in fact, I was a bit in tears,” Mr Maycock said.
“I’m from a family that really cannot hold a note when it comes to singing,” he joked.
“To see him up there performing and singing - it really says a lot about what the young ones are doing, what the teachers are doing to prepare them to perform at such a national level.”
Mr Maycock applauded the calibre of the singing and dancing at the festival.
“The talent is tremendous and unbelievable and I am so proud of all the children who performed today,” he said.
Parents of eight-year-old Nazya Maycock agreed that the Festival was a great chance for her to showcase her talents.
“I feel awesome. I am proud of her,” said her stepfather Sean Carter.
“Her talent is great and she will take it to the next level. It is just one more thing that she will achieve.”
“I am really proud to see my daughter go up there,” added her mother and jazz artist Nikki Carter. “She did a great job and I am looking forward to her coming back again next year and doing even better.”
