BOC SUPPORTS

MOORE’S ISLAND

ATHLETE

IN the continuing effort by The Bahamas Olympic Committee to develop and recognise athletic talent throughout the entire Bahamas, Moore’s Island athlete Shane Jones was among the recipients of the BOC’s coveted Olympic Scholarships. Jones is a short distance sprint standout with impressive results at the CARIFTA and Junior CAC Games.

The BOC Olympic Scholarships are administered in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee and are aimed at encouraging athletes assessed as having high potential for Olympic competition.

Jones said that the scholarship will allow him to “put all my focus on track and field… and to perform at peak level in competition.

Said Romell Knowles, BOC secretary general: “Shane Jones is but one of the many athletes who received an Olympic Scholarship this year and we have high hopes for all our athletes to make it in to the Olympiad of Rio 2016.”

THE Whitty K, skippered by Stefan Knowles, dominated the first Rock Sound Regatta held over the weekend in Eleuthera.

Knowles and his Whitty K won all of the C Class races as well as the special Damian Gomez Cup that was held in honour of the Member of Parliament for North Eleuthera. The race was designed to allow at least one member from Rock Sound to sail on each of the boats.

Coming in second overall was the Leathal Weapon, followed by the Thunderbird, the Lady Eunice and the Melva B. A total of 12 boats participated in the regatta on Friday and Saturday.

The regatta was held in honour of the late King Eric Gibson, who had agitated for the staging of a regatta in Rock Sound long before he died last December.
