Be patient with our police force

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The incident involving the seizure of vehicles and bullets by Bahamas Customs and the Police has caused criticism from media personnel and politicians accusing the Police of “selective justice”. It appears, that the critics expected that the Police would have arrested and charged the consignees immediately.

It is reported that the vehicles were stolen in the USA and the large cache of ammunition arrived from the USA. The Police have to prove that the consignee(s) are involved. To do so, the person(s) named on Customs documents must be interrogated.

The Police must be able to prove their involvement before proceeding with arrests and charges. It is necessary that investigations be conducted in the USA to determine: (a) the ownership of the vehicles (statements to be taken from the owners and documents re: proof of ownership collected; (b)

The Shippers and consignor be interrogated by the Police and Customs officials in the USA (the FBI would most likely be involved, as the items that are being shipped overseas makes it a federal offence).

All of the documentation for shipping to be collected for investigation and presentation in a Court. (c) Tracing the vendor from where the bullets were purchased and identifying the purchaser.

Our Police Force has to rely on assistance from US law enforcement to acquire evidence to support the arrests and prosecution of the consignors and the USA and the consignees in The Bahamas.

I have faith that our Police Force and US Law enforcement are working diligently to produce the desired result. I feel certain that our Police officers are of particular concern about the imported ammunition and will pursue every means to expose the perpetrators.

We must be patient and stop maligning and discrediting our Police Force.
