SOFTBALL CLASSIC STARTS TOMORROW

By RICARDO WELLS

THE Austin Knowles high school national championship softball classic will start tomorrow at the Banker’s Field in the Blue Hills sporting complex.

After poor weather and scheduling conflicts prevented the scheduled start on Wednesday, Godfrey Burnside, the event co-ordinator, confirmed yesterday that the plan is to play over the weekend and crown a champion on Monday.

The classic features some of the nation’s top teams and players and had been scheduled to begin on Wednesday with two games - between the senior girls from St Anne’s Blue Waves and All Andros followed by a senior boys clash between All Andros and the C V Bethel Stingrays.

Mr Burnside explained that some teams originally scheduled to participate were not able to make it but organisers have worked to find comparable replacements.

The event will display some of the best high school softball has to offer with Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools leading teams Jordan Prince Williams, Queen’s College and St Anne’s; tough teams from the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association, Government High School, C V Bethel and C R Walker and a number of schools from Freeport and the Family Islands.

“We will start play at 12 noon on Saturday, play all day Sunday and hopefully crown a champion by 1pm on Monday,” Mr Burnside said.

Co-ordinators of the event are inviting the public to come out and support the young talent.
