CHRISTIAN Cargill’s historic run at the ITA Atlantic Regional tournament came to an end for the William and Mary University freshman tennis star.
Cargill was eliminated in the round of 16 yesterday by the No. 9 seeded Luca Corinteli of Virginia, 6-4, 6-2.
With the loss, Cargill moved to a 6-4 record in his first semester with the Tribe.
Corinteli advanced to the quarter-finals where he will meet No. 8 seeded Francisco Dias of George Washington on Monday.
Cargill was one of two unseeded players to advance to the round of 16 and was one of just two freshmen to reach the round of 16.
The Bahamian tennis ace made school history when he pulled off a stunning upset over No.29 nationally ranked Leo Stakhovsky of Penn State, 6-3, 6-2.
Stakhovsky was the tournament’s No. 3 seed after earning First Team All-Big Ten honours last season and receiving a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship.
With the win he advanced to the round of 16 at the event, hosted by The University of Virginia Cavaliers at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville.
Cargill opened the tournament with he upset homecourt favourite Jai Corbett of Virginia in three sets, 6-3,1-6, 6-3.
The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, November 6-9.
Headed into college, Cargill was ranked a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and was ranked as high as No. 45 nationally by the same media outlet.
He was named the Player of the Year for Saddlebrook Tennis Academy during both his junior and senior years of high school and was rated No. 211 in the ITF World Junior RankingsIn 2014.
Prior to the start of his collegiate career, Cargill had a productive summer on the aforementioned ITF tour where he was a singles finalist at a Grade 4 ITF in Guatemala in March.
He also advanced to the singles quarter-finals in the Grade 3 ITF Costa Rica event in March and a doubles finalist at the Grade 4 Bahamas ITF in July.
He is the son of Patrick and Susan Cargill and the younger brother of Ondre, who plays on the men’s tennis team at Temple.
