Are we idiots?

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Media houses confirmed last weekend that the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) approved the sale of the British Colonial Hilton Hotel to the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CHCEC). Of course, the details surrounding the sale are at best sceptical and shrouded in mystery. Should we be surprised?

One of the details of the sale was that the government gave the CHCEC six acres of prime property, which adds to the long list of notable concessions that are reserved only for foreign owned companies. Leasing land is out of the question in the Bahamas and it just might preserve wealth for Bahamians.

The CHCEC will be starting other businesses. More jobs will be added to the economy and the prime minister in his unmistakable mirth promised a few hundred of them. Excitement is in the air and Bahamians can’t wait to punch their cards.

Gordon Bowe, Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) Chairman when commenting about the sale said, “The country needs a more comprehensive and transparent negotiating strategy regarding foreign direct investment (FDI)”. I believe the BCCEC Chairman was all too kind and way too diplomatic.

Lou Holtz said, “God looks after children, animals and idiots”. Seeing that our decision making puts us in the latter category and because we are a God-fearing nation, I guess we have nothing to worry about.
