LOCAL sororities and fraternities came together on Saturday afternoon to officially launch a new awareness campaign “Greeks Against Violence”.
Victronia Lightbourne, Social Action Chair of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, said the campaign, which was inspired by the tragic shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, was launched to speak out against the increased violence in the Bahamas.
“The event is a part of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority social calendar,” Mr Lightbourne said.
“We launched the campaign ‘Greeks Against Gun Violence’ due to the increased number of shootings in the capital.
“It was prompted by the shooting in Ferguson, that inspired us and we thought we should be able to speak out against crime in our own home town and affect change.
“We decided that is was something that not just us should do but also other organisations, so it was a great way to collaborate and spread the message. So on Saturday was the launch, with the photo where Greek organisations came together and held hands up as to say ‘Don’t shoot’. We hope to do more with other Greek organisations as we see it as a small step in decreasing the amount of gun violence in the country.
“However, we do not just want it to be a Greek thing. It is something that has affected everyone, the community, families, tourism, our economy and our way of life. We are hoping this will inspire the entire country to stand up against gun violence.”
Ms Lightbourne said the next step is to create a public service announcement to further spread their message of peace.
