Comets get 11-2 win over Saints

THE Queen’s College Comets sent a message to the rest of the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools junior boys softball division with a convincing win over the Kingsway Academy Saints yesterday.

Behind a stellar performance by pitcher Daalan Adderley, the Comets parlayed a disciplined defensive effort into an 11-2 win. The Comets started the game with hot bats, ringing up nine of their 11 runs in the first three innings as they punished the Saints’ questionable defensive play.

Comets coach Garry Markhan called his team’s play a “work in progress.”

“This was our first game out so we are trying to work out the cobwebs. We have a lot of young players still learning the games, so I applaud the effort displayed today,” Markham said.

He praised his team’s defensive play, calling it “the key” to the Comets’ victory.

Queen’s College’s infield showed up yesterday, covering what seemed to be every ground ball.

Adderley dazzled the crowd in the bottom of the fifth inning as he turned a routing ground ball into a double play. Springing into action to cover a ball hit towards him, Adderley made a throw across his body to start the 1-3-2 double play, and finished the game with four strikeouts and a two-run home run.

Juliet Douglas-Sands, coach of the Saints, pinned her team’s loss on errors. She said that missed a lot of plays that they should have made.

“This was our first game out, so the errors that we made today we have to work to correct before game two,” said Douglas-Sands.

The Saints coach also took notice of the opposing pitchers’ performance, indicating that his “pitch diversity” kept the Saints’ hitters off balance throughout the game.

“He changed his pitches up very well, that was key for them today. He pitched a great game,” Douglas-Sands said.

QC is scheduled to take the field against Nassau Christian Academy on Tuesday, while the Saints will travel to SAC to play the defending champions Big Red Machine.
