Never have there been so many attacks on so many pillars of social order, which has added to our people’s confusion, hopelessness and frustration.

We are watching the systematic destruction of the Bahamian way of life at the hands of a few who promised “help and hope”.

In three short years, this present government has allowed arrogance, corruption, scandal, greed and obstinacy to be the synopsis of all of its accomplishments and it shows no signs of slowing down.

They have certainly helped themselves while hoping the Bahamian people would sit quietly by.

This government was elected in part on the basis of their promises to address the crime issue, instead, murderers are still released on bail to commit more crimes, murder rates show no signs of slowing down, multimillionaire ‘numbers men’ had their nefarious operations legitimised and seemingly every accountant in Nassau will get to audit the audits of the Public Health Authority!

How can those in authority expect the populace to be law-abiding when the laws they are duty bound to uphold appear to be subverted?

The lack of respect, integrity, character and dishonour that is rampant in the House of Assembly is disturbing to watch.

It cannot encourage those watching to aspire to do great and noble things.

It adds to this culture of self-centredness, instant gratification and wanting to “get over” on others at any cost.

Add increasing numbers of single parent homes, gambling, high levels of unemployment and the lack of interest this government shows in the citizenry to the stew and we have a potent mixture for greater socioeconomic anarchy.

I can’t forget Junkanoo Carnival, which by its advertisements appears to be a prostitution of the remnants of this country’s morality for short term economic gain.

Or did its organisers expect for the value and esteem of women in the eyes of men to be increased as a result of this exercise?

In spite of the lip service paid by the government through Urban Renewal and other social programmes, by their actions our nation’s leaders show that they do not understand or care that strong families create strong communities and strong communities create a strong nation.

If we are economically strong as a nation, but morally loose, we will fall.
