THE North Andros High Seminoles and Mary Star Catholic High out of Grand Bahama emerged as the champions of the eighth annual Gateway Christian Academy Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Gateway Gymnasium in Porgy Bay, Bimini, over the weekend.
The surprise was that, for the first time, the host Eagles were not represented in the finals of either division, much to the disdain and dismay of the entire island.
The Seminoles pulled off the senior boys crown over the Old Bight High Hawks from Cat Island, while the Crusaders prevailed over the Seminoles in the junior boys’ division.
After putting up much of a fight in the first quarter, the feisty Old Bight Hawks ended the half with a respectable 12-point deficit at 39-27. However, the last two quarters were a totally different story as North Andros relentlessly applied a full court man-to-man pressure defence and it took its toll as they rallied back for the win.
Treako Moss led the way for the Seminoles with 25 points to cart off the most valuable player award. Justin Hoyte showed a bright spot for the Crusaders with 23 points.
Although the Crusaders emerged as the champions of the junior division, there were some exciting games in the round robin play.
In the consolation game, the CW Saunders Cougars squeaked pass the Gateway Academy Eagles 46-38. Philip Moss had a game high 22 points in the win.
In the championship game, George Williams scored 18 points and was named the MVP as the Crusaders won the title over the Seminoles.
On hand for the tournament was Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson, who brought remarks during the awards ceremony.
Tourney organiser Gilbert Rolle Jr thanked the teams, officials, fans and sponsors for making the event an exciting one.
