A MAN appeared in Magistrates Court yesterday accused of killing his lover.
William Gregory Strachan, 46, of Nassau Village stood before Magistrate Andrew Forbes facing a charge of murder concerning the April 17 death of Doretta Rolle.
Around 7am on the day in question, Rolle was found unresponsive inside her Nassau Village home and was pronounced dead upon the arrival of EMS personnel who were called to the scene. Reports indicated that the 60-year-old was strangled.
“Are you at this time represented by a lawyer?” the magistrate asked the accused in court.
“No, sir,” said Strachan.
“I’ll advise you then, that at this time, you are not required to enter a plea to the charge,” the magistrate said before reading the particulars of the offence.
Strachan is accused of intentionally causing Rolle’s death by means of unlawful harm.
The charge of murder comes under Section 291 (1b) of the Penal Code, Chapter 84, which does not attract the discretionary death penalty if a Supreme Court jury finds him guilty at trial.
“You understand the nature of the charge?” the magistrate asked.
“Yes, sir,” said Strachan.
Strachan was told that his case would be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court when he next appears in Magistrate’s Court on June 19 for the presentation of a Voluntary Bill of Indictment.
“This is an offence for which a magistrate does not have the jurisdiction to consider bail. Therefore bail is denied and you are remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison until that time,” the magistrate added, before advising the accused of his right to apply for bail to the Supreme Court.
