WHEN Sir Durward Knowles, the Olympic champion sailor, was unable to attend the street naming ceremony for Mychal “Sweet Bells” Thompson, he also missed the unveiling of the 28 Bahamian sporting icons at the Sports Legends Walk at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, of which he is one.
Sir Durward, who was honoured at the recent Independence celebrations recognising the greatest Bahamian athletes, received a surprise when Jamaal Rolle, the Celebrity Artist who had been commissioned to produce the portaits for the Sports Legends Walk, made a special delivery to the “Sea Wolf”’.
Mr Rolle arrived at Sir Durward’s weekly luncheon at Montagu Gardens on Wednesday to deliver personally his own hand portrait. Sir Durward, who was surrounded by his friends, was overjoyed at such a gesture, who he said was “too busy to spend any time with him”.
“Jamaal is my friend and I’m proud of what he has accomplished,” said Sir Durward. “I felt he was too busy to come and see me, but he surprised me and he also sat down and dined with us”.
