GEORGE Washington senior forward Grand Bahamian Jonquel Jones was named to the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which recognises the women’s national player of the year, the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced on Wednesday.
Jones is the nation’s third-leading rebounder this season, averaging 15.0 boards per game to go with 17.1 points and 2.4 blocks per contest, ranking fourth and third in the Atlantic 10, respectively. Jones has posted five straight double-doubles, tied for the fourth-most in the NCAA.
The 6-foot-4 forward from Freeport, Bahamas, who has been named A-10 Player of the Week in each of the last two weeks, is the reigning A-10 Player and Defensive Player of the Year and an honourable mention All-American. Last month she was also selected to the preseason watch list for the John R Wooden Award.
Jones is one of 20 players from 16 schools and the only player not from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC or American conferences.
The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, along with the Oscar Robertson Trophy (men’s national player of the year) and the Integris Wayman Tisdale Award (men’s national freshman of the year), will be presented at the College Basketball Awards gala in Oklahoma City on April 11, 2016. The USBWA, comprised of nearly 1,000 sports journalists covering college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites, will select the recipients of the awards.
