A 27-year-old woman is in police custody in connection with a hit-and-run car accident early Monday morning that left a man dead.
Officer-in-charge of the Traffic Department Supt Craig Stubbs said police canvassed the area all day Monday and recovered video footage from several businesses that led them to the woman – who fled the scene after the accident.
According to police, the suspect told them she thought she had hit a dog and did not know she had killed a man.
“We want to thank members of the public who assisted us in our efforts, it is because of them that we found this woman. We walked up and down and got the video footage and saw the car and the license plate. That enabled us to find the woman and we arrested her late Monday night,” he said.
“When we spoke to the woman she said she thought she hit a dog and did not realise it was a person. It is a very low car and she was not speeding so there is a possibility that she did not see. The victim has no broken bones, his death was a result of being dragged a significant distance. But we are investigating and we hope to wrap this case up soon.”
Supt Stubbs said the woman will most likely be charged with killing someone during the course of dangerous driving, which carries maximum prison sentence of five years and a fine of $10,000.
According to reports, shortly after 6am on Monday, the woman was driving a black Honda Civic on Golden Isles Road, when it is claimed she struck a pedestrian and dragged him about 1,000 feet east on Carmichael Road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Anthony Eardely Moss of Rocky Pine Road.
