A TEEN was granted $5,000 bail yesterday after he was arraigned in Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession and dissemination of child pornography.

Deontra Demeritte, 18, who has retained lawyer Murrio Ducille to defend him against two counts of child pornography, is now scheduled to reappear before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt on February 17 to learn when and before whom he will stand trial.

The Jubilee Gardens resident is claimed to have committed the crimes on December 14, 2014.

Demeritte pleaded not guilty to both counts after electing to be tried in Magistrates Court.

On the question of bail, police prosecutor ASP Clifford Daxon offered no objection to a bond.

However, the chief magistrate said she was not inclined to rush a decision on bail for an arraignment that took place close to 4pm.

Mr Ducille argued that the late arraignment could not be blamed on either the court or his client, who is presumed innocent by law.

The lawyer argued that Demeritte, who was not being charged with murder, should not go to prison for such charges.

After an hour’s break from the matter, the magistrate granted the 18-year-old $5,000 bail with a suretor.

She added the condition that he report to the Carmichael Road police station each Wednesday on or before 6pm.
